Keep FFmpeg’s outgoing YouTube stream running across clip boundaries, then choose the right way to join the source files. For compatible clips where you want to avoid re-encoding, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and verify the files’ stream layouts and durations. If inputs need normalization or re-encoding, use the concat filter instead. Neither method can be prescribed blindly: gaps can come from mismatched stream lengths, inaccurate duration metadata, timestamp discontinuities, encoder or ingest problems, or the network.

First find out where the gap is coming from

A quiet moment between clips is not necessarily a YouTube problem. The join can inherit bad timing from the files, or the video and audio streams within a file may end at different times. A stream can also sound fine before it leaves the encoder but fail during delivery. The right fix depends on where the audio first disappears.

  • Gap at the same boundary in a local playback or archive: inspect the source clips, their audio/video end times, and the concat method.
  • Audio works locally but not in the YouTube preview or for viewers: check encoder output, YouTube’s audio requirements, stream health, and the outbound connection.
  • Gap moves or timing drifts from boundary to boundary: investigate duration metadata and timestamps rather than adding a crossfade as a first resort.

FFmpeg’s documentation notes that the concat demuxer adjusts timestamps using calculated file durations and may cause gaps when streams do not have exactly the same length. That makes file inspection and a representative test important; there is no single command that fixes every set of inputs.

Inspect every clip before joining it

Check that the files contain the expected video and audio streams, and compare their codecs, time bases, sample rates, channel layouts, and actual durations. Pay particular attention to whether audio and video end together. The concat demuxer requires matching streams, including codecs and time bases, and relies on duration information when placing each file after the previous one.

If a file’s stored duration is wrong or the file is truncated, correct the source or use the demuxer’s duration directive to override the stored duration where appropriate. Do not assume the visible length in a media player is sufficient proof that the audio and video timestamps align.

For a detailed review, see the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. It describes the demuxer’s stream compatibility requirements, timestamp handling, duration directive, and the possibility of gaps.

Choose the concat method that fits your files

Method Use it when Important limitation
Concat demuxer The files have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding. It depends on compatible stream layouts and duration information. Unequal stream lengths or inaccurate durations can cause gaps.
Concat filter The inputs need processing or re-encoding is already part of your workflow. Each segment must start at timestamp zero. For non-final segments, the filter uses the longest stream duration and pads shorter audio streams with silence as needed.
acrossfade You deliberately want adjacent audio to blend rather than meet at a hard cut. It changes the sound of the transition; it does not check or repair incorrect timestamps.

Use the concat demuxer for compatible clips

The demuxer reads a list of files as though their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each later file follows the calculated end of the preceding one. That can avoid re-encoding, but it cannot make incompatible streams compatible or repair wrong timing by itself. Verify the inputs and their duration information first.

If a clip’s audio ends earlier than its video, the next file may be positioned according to the previous file’s calculated end, leaving a gap in the audio. Review and correct the file or its duration information instead of expecting stream copy to infer the intended handoff.

It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Use the concat filter when processing or re-encoding is needed

The concat filter is the better fit when the inputs need normalization or re-encoding. Make sure each segment starts at timestamp zero. For a non-final segment, the filter aligns to the longest stream and pads shorter audio with silence. That padding can be mistaken for a defect if you expected the next clip’s sound to begin as soon as its audio track ends.

Read the FFmpeg filters documentation and the FFmpeg FAQ for the documented filter and demuxer behaviors. Do not add -c copy expecting it to fix incompatible inputs or inaccurate durations: avoiding re-encoding and processing through a filter are different workflows.

Add an audio crossfade only for an intentional blend

FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter can blend adjacent audio inputs and lets you set the fade duration, curves, and overlap behavior. Use it when a blended transition suits the content—for example, when one music bed should flow into another—not as a substitute for fixing source timing. The FFmpeg documentation’s acrossfade=d=10 is an example, not a universal duration recommendation.

Keep YouTube’s incoming audio configuration consistent

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codec options. Its current encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound, with advanced audio bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube’s stated recommendations, not repairs for incorrect timestamps in source files.

  • If you use primary and backup stream configurations, make their audio sample rates match.
  • For video encoder settings, YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Keyframe frequency is a video setting; it does not correct an audio gap.

Confirm the settings for your setup against YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and live streaming error messages.

Test the transition and isolate the fault before going live

  1. Use representative material. Test with clips that have the same kind of audio, motion, and transitions as your planned stream.
  2. Listen at each join. Check the local output or archive as well as the YouTube preview. Note whether the gap appears at the same boundary and whether it is present locally.
  3. Watch the stream health and messages. Check YouTube’s preview and status messages while the test is running.
  4. Inspect the encoder output and archive. If the gap is already audible there, investigate the source files, routing, encoder errors, and system load.
  5. Check connectivity if the local output is healthy. If the encoder output sounds right but delivery does not, investigate outbound connection strength and the ingest path.

YouTube advises testing before a live stream and recommends checking the outbound connection when encoder output is healthy. Its live stream troubleshooting guide covers source, encoder, archive, CPU, and connection checks.

Copyright and reused material still matter

Fixing the audio handoff does not grant permission to stream the recordings. Use audio and video you own or are licensed to use, and check the relevant YouTube rules for the content and channel. A technically continuous stream does not establish that material is permitted or that a channel meets any monetization requirements. If you need a practical preflight list, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
