Keep live API keys out of prompts and source code, and stop the assistant from reading files that contain them. Then limit what an agent can do with shell access or network access, and scan and review its changes before merging. These controls reduce different risks: a code scanner may catch a key written to a file, but it cannot undo a key already sent to a model or printed in a tool transcript.

How an AI coding assistant can expose a key

A key can escape through several paths, even if you never ask the assistant to reveal it:

  • File access: an agent reads a .env file, local settings file, or cloud credential file while exploring the project.
  • Prompt content: you paste a live credential into a chat, issue, repository instruction, or example.
  • Command output: an agent runs a command that prints environment variables or credential-bearing configuration, and the output becomes part of the interaction or transcript.
  • Prompt injection: untrusted repository content, an issue, a web page, or tool output tries to steer an agent with file or network access into disclosing data or taking an unsafe action. OpenAI describes prompt injections as an evolving security challenge and recommends limiting agent access to needed data and reviewing consequential actions (OpenAI: Understanding prompt injections).

The practical goal is to prevent unnecessary access first, reduce what an agent can transmit or expose second, and use scanning and review to catch mistakes afterward.

Before using the assistant: reduce what it can access

Keep live keys out of code and prompts

Do not hardcode API keys in source, paste them into assistant prompts, or place them in repository instructions, issue text, or examples. OpenAI’s API key guidance says, “Never commit your key to your repository,” and recommends using environment variables rather than embedding keys in source (OpenAI: Best Practices for API Key Safety). An environment variable keeps the literal value out of source code, but it is not an access boundary: an agent or command running in that environment may still be able to read or print it. Use placeholders only in files such as .env.example.

Block secret-bearing files using the assistant’s own controls

Use a file deny or ignore mechanism documented for your specific assistant, and check that it applies to the workspace and mode you are using. Syntax and behavior are not portable between products.

  • Claude Code: its FAQ gives "Read(.env*)" as a Read deny rule example in .claude/settings.json (Claude Code FAQ).
  • Cursor: its agent documentation describes .cursorignore for excluding files from agent access. Cursor also says its first-party agent defaults require approval for sensitive actions and recommends keeping those defaults enabled (Cursor: Ignore files).

These controls address file access, not every other route. Inventory other places secrets may be present, including shell environments, cloud credentials, CI variables, command output, and MCP or extension configuration. Confirm the active assistant configuration actually excludes the relevant paths; do not assume an ignore rule protects shell access or applies in every mode.

Choose the permission profile deliberately

Keep manual approval for sensitive actions where the product offers it. Review commands before approving them, avoid broad or unbounded permissions, and do not ask an assistant to print environment variables, credential files, or unrestricted command output. A file exclusion cannot protect a secret that a permitted command can retrieve by another route.

Use managed, scoped credentials for production

For production workloads, consider a key management service or secret store and grant access only to the workload that needs it. Where the provider and architecture support it, short-lived credentials or workload identity can reduce dependence on long-lived stored keys. These approaches require correct permissions and configuration; neither makes a broadly privileged agent safe by itself. OpenAI recommends considering key management for production deployments, and Cursor documents short-lived OIDC credentials for cloud agents (OpenAI key safety guidance; Cursor: Cloud agent security).

While a local or cloud agent is working

Treat content and tool results as untrusted

Repository files, issues, web pages, and command output can contain instructions that attempt to redirect an agent. Give it access only to the data and tools needed for the task, and scrutinize consequential actions rather than trusting content because it appears in a project file.

Constrain cloud-agent network access

If a cloud agent can access secrets, restrict outbound network connections to destinations needed for the job. Cursor documents egress controls and redacted runtime secrets for cloud agents; GitHub documents internet restrictions for Copilot cloud agent. These are product-specific controls: availability, configuration, and defaults can vary by product, mode, and administrator policy. Consult the current vendor documentation rather than assuming a control is enabled (Cursor: Cloud agent security; GitHub: About Copilot cloud agent).

An allowlist can block an agent from sending data to arbitrary destinations, but a narrow list may also interfere with legitimate work. Allow only the destinations required for the task, and do not treat network restrictions as a substitute for limiting file and credential access.

Compare the controls by what they actually do

Control Primary purpose Limitation
Tool-level file deny or ignore rule Keep credential-bearing files outside the agent’s file context Syntax is product-specific; verify coverage across paths and modes.
Environment variables Keep key values out of source code An agent or command may still read or print the process environment.
Key management service or secret store Centralize credential storage and access control Requires correct workload permissions and configuration.
Short-lived credentials or workload identity Reduce credential lifetime and reliance on persistent keys Provider and workload support varies.
Network egress restrictions Limit destinations an autonomous agent can contact Can disrupt legitimate tasks; allowlist carefully.
Secret scanning and code review Detect accidental insertion before merge Detection happens later and cannot retract a value already exposed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Before committing or merging: detect mistakes

Run your repository’s secret scanner or hosting platform’s equivalent, then inspect the agent’s diff, generated configuration, and relevant logs. GitHub says Copilot cloud agent scans generated code for secrets; its changes still require human review before a pull request can merge (GitHub: About Copilot cloud agent). Cursor describes a draft pull-request handoff for its cloud agents (Cursor: Cloud agent security).

Scanning is a detection layer, not proof that a credential stayed private. Scanners look for recognized patterns and locations; they may miss formats, and they cannot reverse transmission to a model, inclusion in a local transcript, or exposure in command output. Review what the assistant accessed and ran as well as what it changed.

If you may have exposed a key

  1. Revoke or rotate it promptly. Create a replacement and update the legitimate application or workload. OpenAI recommends immediate rotation when a key is believed to have leaked (OpenAI: Best Practices for API Key Safety).
  2. Check account activity and usage. Look for unexpected requests or charges; a compromised key can consume account quota, and OpenAI recommends monitoring usage (OpenAI key safety guidance).
  3. Remove the exposed value from tracked files and history where appropriate. Deletion alone is not enough: copies may remain in clones, logs, caches, or provider-side systems, so rotate even if you remove the visible copy.
  4. Review the exposure path. Check whether the key appeared in a prompt, file context, command output, transcript, commit, or network-accessible workflow, then tighten the corresponding control before resuming.

A practical setup checklist

  • Identify secret locations: project files, local settings, shell environment, cloud credentials, CI variables, tool output, and extension or MCP configuration.
  • Keep live credentials out of prompts, repository text, examples, and source code.
  • Configure the assistant’s documented file exclusion or deny rules and verify them in the active workspace and mode.
  • Use the least-permissive agent profile, with approval for sensitive actions where available.
  • For cloud agents, restrict outbound access and use runtime secret redaction or short-lived credentials when supported.
  • Scan changes and review the diff and relevant logs before committing or merging.
  • If exposure is suspected, rotate first, update the workload, and inspect account usage.
