Use Selenium Python’s ActionChains to send Enter to the element that currently has keyboard focus, without passing a WebElement to the key action:

ActionChains(driver).send_keys(Keys.ENTER).perform()The important condition is focus: this sends the key to the currently focused page element, not to an element Selenium selects automatically.
Send Enter to the currently focused element
Selenium’s ActionChains.send_keys(*keys_to_send) sends keys to the current focused element. Use it when the intended input or other keyboard-interactable control already has focus, or after you have established focus through a prior interaction. See the Selenium Python ActionChains API.

Make sure the intended control has focus
If a control is not already focused, locate it and interact with it first. You can still send the final Enter action without supplying a WebElement to ActionChains.send_keys:

ActionChains(driver).send_keys(Keys.ENTER).perform()Here, the element lookup and click establish focus and the text is entered into the search box; the final Enter action is sent through ActionChains without an element argument. Whether Enter submits a form or triggers another result depends on how the page handles keyboard input.

Choose between ActionChains and element-directed keys

The direct element pattern is shown in the Selenium Python Bindings guide. Selenium describes element-directed key interactions as applying to text fields and keyboard-interactable elements, with interactions designed to emulate user experience; see Interacting with web elements.
Common problems and fixes
- Enter does nothing or affects the wrong control: ActionChains uses the current focus. Click or otherwise focus the intended page control before sending the key, then verify the page’s keyboard behavior.
- You expect Selenium to choose a page element:
ActionChains.send_keysdoes not locate a target. Use a locator to establish focus or use the element’ssend_keysmethod when you know the target. - You expect a browser-toolbar shortcut: this is a WebDriver keyboard action for page input. The cited API does not establish it as a reliable way to control browser chrome.
- You replace the key action with JavaScript: executing page JavaScript is a different operation and does not establish that the page received an Enter key event. Use the keyboard action when you need to send Enter as keyboard input.
