Looping does not lock resolution or prevent buffering: YouTube adjusts playback to the video’s available quality, your device, and current connection conditions.
Loop a video or playlist
Loop controls repeat playback; they do not change resolution. Labels and control locations can vary by device and app version. If the labels differ, look in the video player’s Settings or playlist controls.
YouTube mobile app
- Open the video’s watch screen and tap Settings.
- Tap Additional settings, then Loop video.
Computer
- Right-click the video player.
- Select Loop.
TV or game console
- While the video plays, press down on the remote or controller.
- Select Repeat until the control says Currently playing to repeat one video, or Playlist to repeat the playlist.
Playlist on mobile
- Start the playlist and tap Loop in the playlist controls to repeat the playlist.
- Tap the control again until a “1” appears on its icon to repeat only the current video.
Choose playback quality separately
YouTube quality can depend on connection speed, the player or screen size, the quality of the uploaded video, and browser support. A resolution choice cannot exceed what the video and device make available.
Standard YouTube on mobile
- During playback, open Settings → Quality.
- Choose Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, or Advanced if available. Advanced lets you select a resolution for the current video.
To set mobile defaults, open Profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Configure preferences separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.

TV or computer
Open the player’s Settings → Quality control. Available choices can vary by device.
YouTube Kids mobile
During playback, open More → Quality. The documented choices are Auto and Data saver, rather than the full standard YouTube list.

What the quality choices mean

For a choppy connection, a lower available resolution may give steadier playback than a manually selected high one. The highest option is not necessarily the best choice if the video repeatedly stops to buffer.
Diagnose buffering before changing equipment
- Check the Quality menu. If a manually selected high resolution is stalling, switch to Auto. If needed, select a lower available resolution and see whether playback stabilizes.
- Compare connections. Where applicable, try another available connection, such as switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Check mobile data charges before using cellular service.
- Improve the TV’s connection conditions. YouTube recommends keeping the TV or streaming device within router range, reducing interference, and minimizing other connected devices when speed is low. Its TV troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming; the help page does not state a publication year.
- Refresh the app and device. Reopen YouTube, restart the device, and install available app or system updates if the problem continues.
- Isolate a TV app or device issue. YouTube suggests trying Chromecast or connecting a laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable. These are alternative playback paths, not upgrades to the original video or guarantees of a stronger stream.
- Check device-maker support. If playback issues persist across services, consult the manufacturer’s support guidance.
YouTube Kids Autoplay is not video looping
Autoplay moves on to another related video based on the child’s viewing history; it does not repeat the same selected video. YouTube for Families says Autoplay is off by default. A parent can disable it in Family Center so the child cannot turn it back on. For the same video, use the player’s Loop control; for a curated sequence, use playlist repeat where the app or device offers it.

Does YouTube Premium improve quality for every video?
No. YouTube Premium’s enhanced-bitrate 1080p Premium is limited to eligible videos uploaded in 1080p. YouTube’s help page excludes live streams, Shorts, and uploads at resolutions above or below 1080p. Premium is not required to loop a video, and the feature does not guarantee a sharper picture for every children’s video.
