Compact serialization removes optional whitespace outside strings without changing the parsed data, but fewer bytes do not guarantee a fixed reduction in LLM tokens. Measure the actual payload with the tokenizer for your target model.
What changes when JSON is compacted?
JSON permits whitespace between its tokens. Indentation, line breaks, and optional spaces used for formatting can therefore be removed without changing the value a parser reads. Whitespace inside a quoted string is different: it is part of the string’s data and must remain unchanged. See the whitespace rules in RFC 8259 and the JSON grammar.
For example, these two representations parse to the same JSON value:

Choose the representation for the job

Apple’s JSONEncoder formatting options distinguish pretty printing, which adds whitespace and indentation for readability, from other formatting choices. Sorted keys are a separate option: sorting can make output consistent or easier to compare, but does not by itself make JSON smaller.
Does minifying JSON reduce LLM token costs?
It reduces formatting bytes, but that alone does not establish how many tokens a particular model will use. Tokenizers can treat characters and strings differently, and no universal token-saving percentage follows from removing whitespace. If token cost is the goal, compare the same semantic payload before and after compact serialization using the tokenizer for the model and API you actually plan to use.

Test representative inputs, not just a tiny example. Record token counts for both forms, and consider output quality as well if you are evaluating a different schema or serialization format. OpenAI’s Structured Outputs overview discusses producing valid schema-constrained JSON; it does not establish a fixed token-cost effect from pretty printing or minification.
A safe workflow for smaller JSON
- Keep an inspectable source form. Author, review, and debug with pretty-printed JSON so nested structure and values are easy to see.
- Compact at the boundary. Serialize the same parsed data without indentation or optional whitespace for the request, storage layer, or prompt where smaller payloads matter.
- Validate equivalence. Parse the compact output and compare its value with the source value. This catches accidental changes to string contents, types, or structure.
- Measure the relevant cost. For LLM use, count tokens with the target model’s tokenizer on representative payloads. Byte savings alone are not a token benchmark.
Should you shorten keys or remove fields?
Usually, keep meaningful property names and preserve hierarchy that represents real semantics. Google’s JSON Style Guide recommends meaningful property names with defined semantics. Shorter keys may save bytes when repeated across arrays of objects, but they make data harder to understand and can break consumers that depend on the existing contract. There is no universal safe abbreviation rule or established break-even point.

Omit empty or null fields only when the receiving application treats omission as equivalent. A missing property and a property explicitly set to null can carry different meanings; verify the consumer’s expectations before changing the schema.
When is canonical JSON needed?
Compact JSON and canonical JSON solve different problems. For ordinary payload reduction, a standard compact serializer is generally the relevant choice. When you need a deterministic representation for hashing or signatures, evaluate the JSON Canonicalization Scheme (JCS) in RFC 8785. It requires that whitespace between JSON tokens not be emitted, but it also specifies canonicalization rules beyond whitespace removal. Do not assume a generic minifier produces JCS-compliant bytes.
