Save the post promptly, but do more than take a screenshot: preserve an unaltered image or recording, the full URL, the account and page context, visible dates and times, and any related messages that help explain what was published. Keep originals separate from anything you crop or annotate. This creates a clearer record of what you saw and how you collected it; it does not, by itself, establish authorship, falsity, legal defamation, or admissibility.
Capture the post and enough context to understand it
Take screenshots or a screen recording while the material is still available. Show the complete relevant statement and enough of the surrounding page or conversation to make its meaning understandable. Include the account or profile details and any date or time displayed by the platform. If one frame cannot show all of that, take several captures rather than cutting away relevant context.
Keep the original capture unchanged. Do not crop, highlight, annotate, or add labels to the only copy. If you need a marked-up excerpt for a lawyer or adviser, make it from a separate working copy. The Australian eSafety Commissioner advises: “Try to save the original evidence, without making any changes to it.” (eSafety Commissioner, “Collecting evidence safely”; accessed October 3, 2026.)

Record where and when you found it
Save the full URL, even if you also save screenshots: a link may stop working if the post is deleted or restricted. Note the platform or website, the account name or handle as it appeared, the date and time you accessed the page, and how you reached it. Include the time zone if you know it. These details help a later reviewer understand the origin and collection of the material; a displayed handle alone does not prove who operated the account or wrote the post.

- Sturdy black expandable bag
- Supplied with enough packaging supplies to process most crime scenes
- Flexibility to package a variety of evidence.
- Includes evidence bags, boxes, tubes, seals and more.
If practical and appropriate, preserve page HTML or other source information alongside the screenshots. A screenshot records what was visible to you; it is not a substitute for every available original electronic file or source detail.
Keep related messages and original files
Save replies, reposts, notifications, direct messages, or other related material when it supplies relevant context. Retain electronic files in their original form where available and avoid overwriting them. If you redact private details for sharing, preserve the unaltered original separately and limit circulation of sensitive material to people who need to review it.
A simple collection log can help keep items intelligible. For each item, record:

This is a practical organizational aid, not a universal court-mandated format. England-and-Wales disclosure guidance treats electronic documents broadly, including communications, metadata, and embedded data, and generally calls for native-format copies that preserve creation-date metadata in disclosure. Practice Direction 31B applies in its procedural context; it should not be read as a universal consumer evidence checklist. NIST’s NISTIR 8387 discusses broader evidence-handler considerations, rather than a defamation-specific consumer procedure.
Choose a capture method with safety in mind
Some apps may notify another user when you screenshot, record, download, or save content. Check the behavior of the app before capturing if notification could put you at risk. The eSafety Commissioner suggests using a second device to photograph or record the screen where a notification is a concern. If your device or account may be monitored, use a safer device or trusted assistance and prioritize your safety.
Do not confront the poster or repost the material as part of preserving it. Record what you can access safely, and avoid sharing it more widely than necessary.

- Prevent Device Lockout and Data Loss in Critical Cases - Patent pending design allows phones and devices to remain powered while sealed using an integrated charging cable (multiple cable tip options available), helping prevent lockout mode and preserving access to critical digital evidence in high priority investigations.
- Complete 10 Pack Evidence Kit with Case and Accessories - Includes 10 evidence bags, a protective storage binder with printed usage instructions, and 2 USB extension cables for organized transport and rapid deployment in time sensitive situations.
- Power Devices While Sealed Using External USB Sources - Connect the bag to a portable USB power bank or wall outlet using a USB power adapter without breaking the seal, allowing continuous charging during transport, storage, or forensic processing.
- Compatible with Charge & Shield Faraday Bags for Signal Isolation - Designed to be used inside Mission Darkness Charge & Shield Faraday Bags when signal blocking is required, enabling RF isolation while preserving biological evidence in the evidence bag.
- Preserve Digital and Physical Evidence Together - Airtight 3mil PET and PE construction protects DNA and trace evidence while keeping the device powered, preventing contamination of external shielding bags and supporting proper chain of custody.
Use a screenshot API only as a supplementary capture
A browser-based screenshot service can preserve a view of a public page, but it does not replace your own record of the URL, account details, capture time, surrounding conversation, or original files. A service capture may not show content that requires your login, may miss information outside the captured view, and cannot independently prove who authored a statement or whether it is false. Consider privacy and access before sending any URL or page content to a third-party service.
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its screenshots can be useful as an additional visual record; they are not legal authentication or a substitute for the original evidence and collection notes. For sensitive or private material, assess whether using an external service is appropriate before submitting a URL.
Or skip the browser setup
A single GET request can capture a page as an image. Use a page URL you are authorized to access, and keep the returned file as a supplementary capture alongside your own context notes and originals. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for details.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Get advice before taking legal steps
Preserving a post does not decide whether it meets the legal definition of defamation where you live. Legal tests and deadlines vary by jurisdiction, so seek qualified local advice promptly if you are considering a claim.
In England and Wales, the Pre-action Protocol for Media and Communications Claims says a defamation letter should identify the specific publication and statement, provide the known publication date where available, explain alleged factual inaccuracies or unsupportable comment, and state how serious harm is said to have occurred or be likely. The protocol gives a one-year limitation period for defamation and malicious falsehood claims in that jurisdiction. Do not apply that period to other countries.
The UK government’s Section 5 guidance concerns complaints about allegedly defamatory user-generated content and a website-operator defence. It is not a universal platform takedown process. Reporting a post does not necessarily preserve the evidence or stop a legal deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does saving a post mean I have proved defamation?
No. A capture records what was visible; legal defamation depends on applicable law and the wider facts.
Can I use a screenshot from a screenshot service as my only record?
No. Keep your own original capture where possible, along with the URL, account and context details, collection time, and relevant native files.
