If an Xbox game disc still works, you may be able to claim a digital copy through Xbox Disc-to-Digital—but the offer is limited to eligible titles, and Microsoft’s rules still require you to keep the qualifying disc. If the disc is missing or the console cannot read it, your options depend on the game, console, and whether you already own a digital license. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical games.
Start by identifying the game and the problem
Before choosing a recovery path, check the game’s exact title and edition, which Xbox generation it was released for, and whether the disc can still be recognized by a disc-capable console. Also check whether you already own the game digitally. These details determine whether Disc-to-Digital, backward compatibility, a replacement disc, or an existing digital license may help.
- The disc is readable: Check whether the exact Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc qualifies for Xbox Disc-to-Digital.
- The disc is readable but the game is older: Check Xbox’s backward-compatibility list. Supported disc games require the disc in the drive to play.
- The disc is missing or unreadable: Look for an exact replacement if the game is available, or check for an existing digital license.
- Your console is a Series S: It cannot read physical discs. You need an eligible digital license or a console with an optical drive.
Can you turn a readable disc into a digital Xbox game?
Xbox announced Disc-to-Digital on August 26, 2026. The program supports most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, but not every disc qualifies, and eligibility can change. To claim or receive an eligible digital entitlement, insert the disc into a supported console and launch the game. Xbox says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits apply only to supported titles. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules condition the entitlement on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require eligibility to be checked again, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have the disc. Keep it; do not sell or discard it after claiming the digital entitlement.

The console must be able to recognize the disc well enough to establish eligibility. Microsoft’s published rules do not promise that a disc too damaged for the console to read can claim a digital license, and the program does not cover every title.
What if the disc is for an older Xbox game?
Backward compatibility is selective: only supported games work on newer Xbox consoles. For a supported disc game, the console downloads the game, but you must keep the disc inserted to play. Check the title against the Xbox backward-compatibility list before buying replacement media or assuming it will run.

Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no optical drive. It cannot install or authenticate a physical game disc. A disc-capable Xbox is necessary for playing games from discs, including supported backward-compatible titles.

For some disc releases, the console may download a higher-generation game package after going online. Whether a disc includes packages for offline use depends on the publisher’s production configuration, not just the disc label. Microsoft explains these configurations in its disc publishing guide.

If the disc is missing or the console cannot read it
If the disc cannot be read, first check whether you already own a digital copy. Digital-game access can depend on the account and console settings: Xbox One and Series digital games use account and Home console licenses, while Xbox 360 licenses follow separate rules. For Xbox 360 games, a downloaded game may be used on the first console it was downloaded to; another console requires the purchasing account to be signed in. If you do not have a usable digital license, an exact replacement disc is a practical option if the game is available and your console can read discs. Match the platform generation and edition, and check region and any special peripheral requirements. A replacement will not restore unavailable downloadable content or multiplayer servers that have shut down.

Microsoft’s cited support material does not establish a general repair or resurfacing method for Xbox game discs. Do not assume polishing or another repair will work; if the console cannot recognize the disc, a replacement or an existing digital license is the more dependable path.

Previously purchased Xbox 360 digital games
The Xbox 360 Store stopped supporting new purchases on July 29, 2024. Xbox says content purchased before the closure remains playable and redownloadable. Selected Xbox 360 games are also playable through backward compatibility on newer consoles; check the compatibility list for the specific title. Xbox’s Store-closure announcement explains what continued after the shutdown.

A surviving game license does not guarantee that online multiplayer still works. Xbox 360 multiplayer remains available only while the publisher supports its servers. For original Xbox games played through backward compatibility, online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable, although supported offline multiplayer and system-link play may remain.
Can you play a disc-owned game on PC or a handheld?
Xbox announced an early-release backward-compatibility program for PC on July 22, 2026, beginning with four original Xbox games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Xbox says owners of the corresponding digital console license can play those games on PC or supported handhelds in supported regions and devices. The announcement does not say that owning a physical disc alone grants a PC license. Availability and device support are limited; see Xbox’s PC backward-compatibility announcement.
