Physical games can still work on current consoles, but a disc or game card is not a universal promise of compatibility or offline play. Check the exact console model and game, confirm the console has the right reader, and expect that installation or updates may be required.
What a physical copy does—and does not—guarantee
A disc or card can provide a physical way to access a game, but the console must support that format and the specific title. Some games require installation or updates, and the disc may need to remain inserted as proof of entitlement while the game runs from console storage.
Manufacturer support pages explain compatibility and installation behavior, but they do not establish that every retail edition contains all necessary data or can be played offline without an account, update, or server. For those details, check the publisher’s instructions for the exact game and edition.
Check compatibility before relying on your collection
PlayStation 5 and PS4 discs
Sony says the PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games—more than 4,000 titles—and its ecosystem page describes more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ PS4 games as playable. These figures refer specifically to PS4 games on PS5, not to other console generations, and compatibility can change. Sony also warns that some PS4 games may show errors or unexpected behavior. Check the PS5 backward-compatibility information for the game before counting on it.

To play a PS4 disc, use a PS5 model with a disc drive. Insert the disc, allow the game to install and update, and leave the disc inserted when you play. A PS4 disc will not work in a PS5 Digital Edition. PS5 does not support PS3 discs. Sony documents an add-on disc drive for certain PS5 Digital Edition model groups; verify your exact model before buying one. Xbox discs and Series S
For a supported backward-compatible Xbox disc game, inserting the disc starts a download to the console’s hard drive. The disc remains relevant even though the game files are installed on the console. Check the Xbox backward-compatibility catalog for the title.

Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. If your library is on disc, you need a disc-capable compatible console to use it.

Xbox disc-based digital entitlement
In an August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support a feature to claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Series X console and launching the game. Microsoft said the physical disc continues to work as before. The announcement says “most,” not all, and does not establish eligibility for every original Xbox or Xbox 360 disc. Xbox’s Jason Ronald, VP Next Generation, described the move as “part of our broader commitment to game preservation.” Read the Xbox announcement for its scope.

Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch game cards
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games originally released for Nintendo Switch. Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2, but some games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s current Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information and game-transfer and compatibility guidance for the title and any noted limitations.
Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards. These are storage media for downloaded software and data; they are not substitutes for physical game cards and do not make an incompatible game playable.

Preserve the media and the ability to use it
- Keep the original media protected. Store discs in their cases and cards in protective cases. Handle optical discs by the edges, and avoid scratches, heat, and direct sunlight. Follow the console manual for platform-specific care.
- Record what you own. Note the console model, game title, region or edition, and whether the package contains a disc or card. This makes it easier to check compatibility and distinguish editions with different requirements.
- Install available updates while they remain available. An update can be useful for play, but its availability now does not guarantee that an account service, download, or server will remain available indefinitely.
- Keep suitable hardware for disc-only copies. Retain a working disc-capable console when a newer model lacks a drive or when compatibility is uncertain. A physical copy cannot make an unsupported format playable.
- Check edition-specific requirements. For a particular game, consult publisher instructions before assuming the disc or card supports offline installation, includes patches or downloadable content, or avoids account checks and server dependence.
