Before installing a Windows feature update, check that Windows offers it for your PC, back up important files, review available storage, and choose a time when you can leave the computer updating. Use Windows Update as the normal installation route; use manual tools only in the circumstances Microsoft documents. These steps concern feature updates—larger releases that add capabilities—not routine quality updates.
1. Check which update you’re preparing for and whether your PC is ready
Open Windows Update and review the available update and its status before trying to install anything manually. The target Windows version matters: menu labels and eligibility can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 and between releases.
For a Windows 11 upgrade, Microsoft says Windows Update indicates when the upgrade has been tested and validated for a specific PC. If you are checking whether a PC meets Windows 11 requirements, use Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and PC Health Check guidance. Minimum hardware specifications do not replace the device-specific readiness signal. If the upgrade is not offered, review Microsoft’s compatibility guidance rather than trying an unofficial bypass. If you meant a smaller, more frequent quality update rather than a feature update, check Windows Update in Settings; Microsoft directs users there for those updates.

2. Back up files you cannot replace
Make a current backup of important documents, photos, and other irreplaceable files before installing. Microsoft recommends backing up files before installing Windows 11 or a new Windows version. An existing OneDrive backup or a suitable external backup device may be enough; you do not need to buy another drive if you already have a backup you can access.
Check that the files you care about are actually present in the backup location and can be opened. A backup you cannot access is not useful if something goes wrong. Backing up is a precaution, not an indication that a feature update normally deletes personal files.

3. Check free space and clean up selectively
Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft’s current storage guidance says feature updates typically require 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space. Treat this as a planning range, not a guarantee: the space required varies with the update route, optional features or languages, installed content, and other updates. Quality updates are smaller and are a different category.

- Cleanup recommendations lets you review categories of files Windows suggests removing before you act.
Review selections carefully, particularly Downloads and large personal files. Do not manually delete Windows system folders to make room. Microsoft’s free-up-space guidance explains these tools and the update storage range.
If Windows says there isn’t enough space
When the Windows Update “Fix issues” flow offers it, you may be able to use a temporary external storage device. Microsoft’s guidance calls for at least 10 GB of free space on that device and an internet connection for this workflow; back up important files before using the device. Windows may still ask for more internal space, so external storage is a contingency rather than a guarantee that the update can proceed. The same Microsoft storage instructions describe the option.

4. Pick a time that allows for downtime
Do not count on a fixed installation duration. The time depends on the PC, available storage, network connection, and update path. Microsoft says downloading and installing Windows 11 usually takes longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update; you can use the PC while Windows 11 downloads and schedule installation for a time you do not plan to use it. Windows Update: the usual route
Use the update offered in Windows Update when it is available for your device. For Windows 11, that offer reflects Microsoft’s validation for the specific PC; its absence is a reason to check compatibility and rollout guidance, not to assume that a manual method is appropriate.

Windows Update Assistant: a documented manual option
Microsoft positions the Windows Update Assistant for a compatible PC that has not received the latest feature update automatically. It does not run on ARM-based PCs. It is not a universal shortcut around compatibility or rollout checks.
Installation media: distinguish an upgrade from a clean install
Installation media can be used in different ways. Do not boot from it and choose a clean installation as a routine preparation step: Microsoft warns that a clean install erases files and installed apps on the drive. Follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation options and understand which route you are selecting before proceeding.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That status does not establish that every Windows 10 PC is eligible for Windows 11 or has the same upgrade route; check the requirements and readiness for the specific device.
