You can loop a local video on YouTube Live with OBS, but the PC must decode the file, encode the outgoing stream, and sustain the upload continuously. Use OBS Media Source for one file or VLC Video for a playlist, start with modest settings, and test your actual computer and connection before relying on a 24/7 setup. There is no verified universal minimum PC specification or upload speed for India.
What to prepare before going live
Think of the setup as two separate jobs: OBS plays and encodes your video; your internet connection sends that encoded stream to YouTube. A file that plays smoothly in a media player may still strain an older PC when OBS has to encode it in real time. Test the actual file, scene, output settings, and network you plan to use.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and an encoder such as OBS.
- A video file that plays reliably in the OBS source you choose, with audio checked from beginning to end.
- Enough sustained upload capacity for your selected bitrate, including headroom for other devices using the connection.
- Power and internet access you can maintain. The cited guidance does not establish a particular UPS size or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Make sure your channel is ready and protect the stream key
YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

- Copy the stream key into OBS when configuring the stream. YouTube explains stream settings and key behavior in Manage live stream settings.
- Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
Choose a loop source in OBS
Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, create a scene, then use the Sources panel’s + button and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, select the local video file, and enable Loop.
- Confirm that the image and audio play correctly in the OBS preview. Let playback continue long enough to check that the loop restarts as expected.
OBS documents Media Source support for containers including MP4, MKV, MOV, WebM, AVI, and others. A listed container does not guarantee that every codec inside every file will decode on your particular PC. Check the file in the installed OBS version. Loop several videos with VLC Video
- Install VLC in the architecture that matches your OBS installation.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the files you want in its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist and preview the transitions and audio between files.
For one file, Media Source avoids the extra VLC dependency. For a rotating set of videos, VLC Video provides playlist playback and looping.
Prepare files to reduce strain
Avoid unnecessary real-time transcoding while streaming. If a file plays smoothly in your chosen source, there is no need to re-encode it just to match a theoretical preset. If playback stutters or decoding taxes the PC, make a compatible lower-resolution copy ahead of time with a tool the computer can handle, then test that copy in OBS. There is no single verified conversion preset for all low-end PCs.

Set OBS output to match the PC and YouTube
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not a performance guarantee. OBS notes that CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its system requirements do not guarantee that a given machine can stream successfully. Keep the scene simple on a weak PC and test the settings with representative video and audio.
Start conservatively
Try 30 fps before attempting 60 fps, and begin at a resolution the PC can encode without dropped frames. This is practical starting advice, not an official YouTube minimum. Lowering resolution or frame rate can ease the encoding load, but the final choice should be based on a test of your machine and connection.

Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations as a reference
For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its recommendations include:

These are YouTube guidance figures, not a promise that an older PC or a particular connection can sustain them. A low-end PC may need a lower output target after testing. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose an encoder based on what your PC supports
If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder, a test can show whether it reduces CPU load enough to help. OBS cautions that older hardware encoders may reduce performance impact at the cost of image quality at the same bitrate. Do not assume a GPU encoder is available or preferable without checking the options in your OBS installation and testing the result. Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Choose the stream bitrate based on sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%, and warns that other people or devices sharing the connection can use that capacity. Its advice is at YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Test upload performance where the PC will run and at the time you expect to stream.
- Allow for household or office traffic; the connection’s headline speed is not necessarily what OBS can use continuously.
- If tests show Wi-Fi instability, try Ethernet and repeat the test. A wired connection is a troubleshooting option, not a universal requirement or uptime guarantee.
No India-wide speed figure is established here. Your ISP, location, plan, and other network use matter, so measure your own sustained upload.

- Run a short test stream before the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live.
- Preview the signal in Live Control Room. Check the image, audio continuity, and stream health rather than assuming a successful OBS start means viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
- Check playback on a mobile device as well as on the streaming PC, and listen for gaps, clipping, or unexpected silence as the file loops.
- If you record a local archive, verify that the file is growing during the test.
- If you have configured a backup encoder, test the failover behavior by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirm the player switches as intended. Do this in a controlled test, not during a broadcast you need to keep uninterrupted.
A configured encoder does not by itself guarantee a 24/7 stream: local power, PC stability, and network availability remain dependencies, and the cited sources do not quantify their reliability.
Troubleshoot common problems
