To run a portrait-video loop as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, prepare a 9:16 master, choose whether to send a single vertical feed or configure YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical dual stream, and test the full encoder setup before going live. YouTube says viewers can discover vertical live streams while browsing Shorts, but it does not guarantee that any particular stream will appear in the Shorts feed. Plan local recordings and scheduled restarts too: streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
Choose a single vertical stream or dual stream
The right setup depends on whether you want only a portrait broadcast or both portrait and landscape outputs. YouTube’s vertical live experience can surface in Shorts, while Live Control Room’s dual-stream option can serve vertical and horizontal audiences. Neither setup guarantees Shorts-feed placement.
| Approach | What viewers receive | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Single vertical output | A portrait live video, suitable for the vertical live experience. | Send a portrait feed from your encoder. Check the composition in YouTube’s preview. |
| Dual stream | Horizontal and vertical versions of the live stream. | Choose the layout in Live Control Room before starting. For an encoder-based setup, select RTMP(S), use the second vertical stream key for the portrait feed, and match each key to its corresponding image format. |
Live Control Room provides layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. These options reframe or arrange the source; inspect the preview to confirm faces, captions, and important graphics remain visible. You cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started. YouTube also notes that some features differ between vertical and horizontal live experiences. See YouTube’s live-streaming guide for current availability and setup details.
Prepare a portrait master that survives cropping
Set the frame and safe area
Make or crop the video for portrait viewing. A 9:16 export such as 1080 × 1920 is a practical example, not a YouTube resolution requirement. Keep faces, titles, and other essential material away from the edges so they remain legible on a phone and are less likely to be cut off by layout changes.

- Review the entire loop vertically, not just a still frame. Check that scene changes and motion do not place key details outside the visible area.
- If you are making a dual stream from landscape footage, decide how the vertical version should be reframed. A center crop may cut off side content; fit-to-phone-width may change how much of the source fills the frame; a stacked layout may preserve more source material but arrange it differently.
- Preview the selected layout in Live Control Room. Do not assume a crop will preserve the intended composition.
Check the loop itself
Watch the transition from the end of the video back to its beginning. A visible jump, sudden silence, or abrupt audio change can be distracting on a continuous channel. If you use a playlist, check transitions between every item, not only the first and last clip.
Set up YouTube Live and your encoder
- Enable live streaming and confirm channel eligibility. Use a channel that can go live, then create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Channel access and feature eligibility can vary; check the current requirements shown by YouTube for your account.
- Choose the output before going live. For one portrait feed, prepare the encoder to send that portrait image. For dual stream, select the layout in Live Control Room and configure the horizontal and vertical feeds before starting.
- Copy the matching stream URL and key into the encoder. For third-party dual streaming, use RTMP(S), the second vertical stream key, and send the matching format to each key. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish or share them.
- Set encoder parameters for the actual source and connection. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and never exceed YouTube’s recommended maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Select codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on your content, encoder, and stable upload capacity rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current settings.
- Test before launch. Run an upload speed test, then check stream health in YouTube and verify both sound and motion in the preview. YouTube specifically recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate. Test fast movement, scene changes, and the loop point; a static preview alone will not reveal every problem.
- Start the broadcast and keep watch on its health. Confirm the preview is live and that the correct portrait or dual layout is reaching YouTube. For a 24/7 operation, plan who or what will notice a dropped connection and how the encoder or service will recover.
Plan continuity, archives, and rewind for sessions over 12 hours
A 24/7 broadcast exceeds YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive and DVR thresholds. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Do not rely on the YouTube replay as the only copy of a continuous program.

- Record a local copy while streaming and verify that the recording is being written successfully. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; an external drive can be one practical option, but YouTube does not require a particular storage device.
- Consider ending and restarting the broadcast on a planned schedule if you need separate, shorter archives. This creates multiple streams, not one uninterrupted archive, and viewers may experience a break during each restart.
- For a self-hosted encoder, account for power, internet interruptions, and restart supervision. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a preferred server or hardware specification or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
- Monitor stream health during operation and have a recovery plan for dropped connections. Long-running does not mean failure-proof.
See YouTube’s pages on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams for the platform’s current archive and rewind caveats.
Clear copyright and monetization checks before looping
Check rights for every visual and audio element
Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video clip, image, voice recording, and music track in the loop. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if it detects material that violates its rules. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption: if a licensed track is managed through Content ID, confirm the rights owner’s allowlisting process for your channel before relying on it. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Do not assume a loop qualifies for monetization
Being discoverable in a vertical live experience is separate from qualifying for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and expect original, authentic viewer value; repetitive or mass-produced material can affect eligibility. A loop is not automatically eligible simply because it is live or formatted for Shorts. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies and your channel’s eligibility before building a revenue plan around it.
Troubleshoot common portrait-live problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Important content is cut off in vertical preview | The crop or layout does not fit the source framing. | Inspect the preview, reposition key material within the portrait safe area, or choose a different layout before starting. |
| The portrait feed does not appear in a dual stream | The vertical stream key, image format, or RTMP(S) configuration may not match the vertical feed. | Verify that the second vertical key receives the portrait image and that dual-stream settings were completed before the broadcast began. |
| Video looks unstable or the stream health is poor | The upload connection may not sustain the chosen encoder output. | Run an upload speed test, review YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and adjust the encoder settings to suit the connection and source. Use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval. |
| Audio is missing or wrong | The encoder may be sending an incorrect input or unsupported audio configuration. | Check the selected audio source, confirm audio is enabled in the encoder, and test with AAC or MP3 before relaunching. |
| The stream is interrupted after music or third-party video starts | YouTube may have detected third-party content or the rights owner may not have allowlisted the channel. | Review rights for the specific item and confirm the owner’s Content ID allowlisting requirements; a license alone may not prevent detection-related interruption. |
| A long broadcast has no complete replay or loses rewind | The session crossed YouTube’s 12-hour archive or DVR threshold. | Use a local recording as the dependable backup and, if separate replays matter, plan shorter sessions with an explicit restart break. |
