Promote a charity livestream as a short campaign, not a one-off announcement: make the donation route and event details clear, tell your existing community in advance, repeat the cause and donation link during the broadcast, then thank supporters and report back afterward. A clear plan helps people understand what they are being asked to support and how to take part.
1. Make the fundraiser ready before you announce it
Confirm the charity and donation route
Decide which charity will benefit and how viewers will donate. Options may include a platform’s native charity tools, a fundraising page, or another supported route. Crisis UK lists Tiltify, JustGiving, and native YouTube or Facebook tools as possibilities; JustGiving describes connecting supported livestream platforms. These options are not interchangeable: availability can depend on the charity, country, platform, and account. Check eligibility and payment handling directly with the charity and the platform before sharing a link.
Make one donation route the primary call to action. Open it on a phone and a computer, check that the charity and campaign are named correctly, and make sure a viewer can find the next step without guessing. If the platform supports a fundraising page connected to the stream, confirm that the connection works before promoting it.
Finish the campaign page and event details
Before publishing an announcement, prepare the campaign page, goal, description, and any optional milestones or incentives. Include the event’s date, start time and time zone, where to watch, what the audience will see, which charity benefits, and how to donate. Charity toolkits may provide approved graphics, overlays, banners, or sample wording; use those where available and follow the charity’s guidance.
Choose a format that suits both the fundraiser and the cause, such as a game, art session, interview, challenge, or conversation. There is no universally best format established by the charity guidance. Make the connection between the activity and the cause easy to explain rather than relying on the format alone to motivate donations.

2. Build a promotion plan your community can act on
Write a message with the essential details
Prepare a short description you can adapt for social posts, community channels, and direct invitations. It should answer four questions: what is happening, why the cause matters to you, when and where people can watch, and how they can donate. Keep the donation link consistent so people do not have to hunt for it.
For example: “I’m streaming [activity] on [date] at [time and time zone] to support [charity]. I’m raising funds for [brief reason]. Watch at [stream link] and donate at [campaign link].” Use accurate details and charity-approved wording where required.

Post on your own social channels and in relevant online communities where promotion is welcome. WWF recommends early and repeated social promotion, teasers, a schedule, and use of its community channels. The British Red Cross points to communities such as Discord, Reddit, and Facebook. Match the channels to your actual audience; a message in an unrelated group is unlikely to help and may break its rules.

Ask the charity whether it can list or share the event, and send the exact event details and link. Some charities invite fundraisers to notify them, and Crisis UK says it may promote streams when notified and tagged. Treat that as a possibility, not a promise.
Schedule reminders without spamming
A practical plan is to announce the event once the page and details are ready, post a reminder with a teaser closer to the date, and share a day-of reminder with the viewing and donation links. Adjust that cadence to your community and platform. Charity guidance encourages promoting early and often and sharing a schedule, but it does not establish a universal number of posts or a guaranteed best broadcast time.
Tiltify’s YouTube guidance recommends creating a livestream ahead of time so the community can plan to watch. Set up the event page or scheduled stream early enough for your audience to see it, then verify the current platform settings and availability for your account.

3. Make participation inviting, not compulsory
A goal, milestone, poll, themed moment, challenge, or reward can give viewers something to anticipate and create a natural moment to talk about the campaign. WWF and Tiltify describe incentives and milestones as engagement options. Pick something that fits the fundraiser and the charity’s rules; none of these tactics guarantees donations, and viewers should not feel pressured to participate in a particular way.
If your streaming or fundraising tools support a chatbot command, a command such as !donate can keep the campaign link easy to find. Check the exact setup for the tools you use. If they do not support it, place the link in the stream description or another stable, visible location.
4. Rehearse the stream and protect participants
Test the viewer experience
- Open the stream and donation route as a viewer, not only as the organizer, and confirm both links work.
- Test the microphone and playback levels so viewers can hear the fundraiser clearly.
- Rehearse the opening, transitions, donation reminders, and closing so the cause and call to action fit naturally into the event.
- If possible, ask another person to watch and flag audio or quality problems while you rehearse and during the broadcast.
American Red Cross guidance recommends testing the stream and having a helper identify issues. Its Facebook fundraising guidance also calls for signed releases for participants and written permission for private property. Requirements vary by platform, charity, and location, so obtain consent from people who will appear and follow the rules that apply to your event before going live or reposting footage.

5. Keep the cause and donation route clear during the broadcast
Start with a concise welcome
At the beginning, name the charity, explain the fundraising goal, and say why you are taking part. Tell viewers where the donation link is and how to use it. American Red Cross guidance recommends introducing the mission and explaining the purpose of the fundraiser.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repeat the message for late arrivals
Viewers join at different times, so repeat the cause and donation call to action periodically. A brief reminder during a natural pause is enough: identify the charity, give the reason for the fundraiser, and point to the same donation link. Encourage viewers to share the stream as well as donate; participation can include watching and spreading the word.
Respond and acknowledge support
Read comments when you can, thank donors, and use any suitable milestones as a chance to update viewers on progress. If another person can monitor the stream, ask them to watch for technical issues and questions while you focus on the event.

6. Thank supporters and close the loop afterward
After the broadcast, post a thank-you and, where appropriate, a replay or short recap. Tell supporters what their participation helped make possible, using confirmed information from the charity rather than an estimate. WWF recommends thanking donors, sharing impact stories, and celebrating the campaign after it ends. Get permission and follow platform and charity rules before sharing images or video of other people.
Choose a fundraising route that fits your charity and audience
Before settling on a tool, compare the practical details rather than assuming every service works for every fundraiser.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Charity and country eligibility | Confirm that the intended charity can receive funds through the selected tool in your country. The available charity guidance does not establish one universal current eligibility list. |
| Donation path | Check whether viewers donate through a campaign page, a connected fundraising page, or an in-stream feature, and make the route clear in your posts and broadcast. |
| Campaign features | Check whether goals, donation tracking, incentives, polls, or rewards are supported and appropriate for your event. |
| Charity assets and promotion | Ask whether the charity provides approved graphics, sample messages, community channels, or possible event promotion. |
Twitch’s 2022 announcement described an in-stream “Donate to Charity” button, while JustGiving describes connected fundraising pages. These are descriptions from those sources, not a guarantee that the feature is currently available to every account or charity. Verify the current setup with the relevant platform before promoting it.
Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera, and streams to YouTube only.
