Prepare for at least 72 hours without power, but treat that as a general Canadian preparedness benchmark—not an estimate of how long any particular outage will last. A landslide can remain dangerous after movement stops, and an outage may coincide with blocked roads, flooding, or unreliable phone and internet service. Follow your electric utility and local emergency-management authorities for incident-specific updates, evacuation instructions, and restoration estimates; this topic alone does not establish that a particular hydropower facility has been damaged.
Build a plan and supplies before the power fails
Government of Canada guidance recommends being ready to care for yourself and your household for a minimum of 72 hours. That is a general preparedness recommendation, not a prediction about an outage following landslide damage. Adjust supplies for household size, health needs, weather, and local official advice.
Make a household kit
- Keep drinking water, ready-to-eat food, and essential supplies for household members and pets. Include items needed by older adults, children, and anyone with special health needs.
- Store flashlights where they are easy to reach and keep spare batteries available. Use flashlights instead of candles during an outage.
- Keep a battery-backup carbon monoxide alarm operating, and make sure smoke alarms are working. Know how to shut off household water; where freezing is a risk, learn how to protect pipes during an outage.
- Keep important contact details and essential instructions on paper, including information you may need if your phone is unavailable.
Plan for medical and mobility needs
Before an outage, talk with clinicians, pharmacies, and medical-equipment providers about powered devices, refrigerated medicines, treatment arrangements, and what to do if equipment loses power. Ask how much backup power is appropriate, where to go if home is no longer safe, and how to evacuate if elevators stop working. Keep the resulting instructions and contacts accessible offline.
Prepare to communicate without internet or phone service
Identify local and regional official information sources in advance, including radio broadcasts and places where authorities may share updates. A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can provide access to local broadcasts without relying on a charged phone or internet connection; choose one that receives stations used in your area. Consider a charged USB power bank for critical devices, and conserve phone battery if an outage begins. Know more than one evacuation route where possible, since cellular and internet services or roads may be unavailable.

Choose backup power around essential needs
Start by listing the loads that must keep working, such as communications, lighting, medical equipment, or refrigeration. Compare options by the devices they can support, expected runtime and recharge or fuel needs, indoor carbon-monoxide implications, noise and placement, maintenance, and whether connection to household wiring requires professional installation. The available guidance does not establish performance for any particular model.
| Option | Useful planning questions | Key safety or access point |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-powered or hand-crank radio | Does it receive local official broadcasts, and can your household keep it ready and powered? | It provides an information option that does not depend on an internet connection. |
| USB power bank | Which critical devices will it support, and how will you keep it charged before an outage? | Use it to preserve access to essential phone functions; it does not replace a plan for loss of mobile service. |
| Battery- or solar-powered portable power unit | Can it support the intended equipment for the needed period, and how will it be recharged? | Canadian guidance says these units do not emit carbon monoxide. |
| Portable fuel-burning generator | Which essential loads will it serve, and what fuel, maintenance, placement, and connection arrangements are needed? | It must be operated outdoors with the required clearance; connecting it to household wiring requires an approved transfer arrangement installed by a qualified electrician. |
If you are considering a generator, determine essential loads before buying or installing equipment. Ask your utility or a licensed electrician about safe connections. For business installations, U.S. Department of Energy guidance also advises checking applicable permits and codes, maintaining and periodically testing the system, and planning adequate fuel. Requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Respond safely during a landslide emergency and outage
Stay clear of the slide and damaged infrastructure
Follow evacuation notices and local authority directions. Do not travel toward a slope, hydropower facility, river, or debris to inspect damage. Landslide movement can resume after an apparent pause. Stay away from the slide area, downed power lines, and broken utility lines; watch for potential flooding and report hazards without approaching them. British Columbia’s PreparedBC landslide guidance says to stay away from broken utilities such as electricity and gas lines. Local authorities determine the danger zones and whether routes are safe.
Get updates and limit unnecessary travel
When it is safe to do so, report or check the outage with your local electric or hydro utility. Listen to local radio and official updates, and preserve phone charge for essential communication. Avoid unnecessary driving when roads, traffic signals, or communications may be disrupted.

Use lighting and cooking equipment safely
Use flashlights rather than candles. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Never use a barbecue, camping stove, or other outdoor fuel-burning cooking appliance inside a home, garage, or other enclosed space—even with doors or windows open.
Operate a fuel-burning generator outdoors
Under the cited Canadian guidance, place a portable fuel-burning generator at least 6 m (20 ft) from homes or other buildings, direct exhaust away from openings, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a working carbon monoxide alarm. Connect appliances directly to the generator unless an approved transfer panel and switch have been installed by a qualified electrician. Never connect a generator through a wall outlet; doing so can create dangerous electrical hazards.

Restore power and appliances carefully
When service returns, follow local utility instructions and allow the electrical system time to stabilize. Government of Canada guidance recommends this sequence:
- Turn heating-system thermostats up first.
- Reconnect the refrigerator and freezer.
- Wait 10 to 15 minutes before reconnecting other appliances.
- Make sure a hot-water heater is filled before powering it.
Stay away from downed electrical lines and report them to the appropriate utility or authorities. For food exposed to an outage, follow official food-safety advice; a general national page may not determine whether a specific food is safe after a particular appliance failure or outage duration.
Understand what is known about hydropower facilities
Households should not assess a dam, hydropower plant, or its electrical equipment themselves. Facility condition, affected circuits, local danger zones, and repair estimates are specific to the incident and must come from the utility or authorities. A 2026 National Energy Administration of China notice for China’s power sector includes landslides and mudslides among secondary hazards and discusses operator inspections, geological-risk monitoring, coordination, and response. Those are operator responsibilities, not household inspection tasks. In the United States, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission emergency-action-plan material describes coordination and communication among dam owners, emergency responders, and law enforcement. Neither reference establishes the condition or restoration schedule of any unnamed facility.
