Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare a bootable MemTest86 USB drive, confirm that your PC can start its UEFI version, and record the installed DIMMs, slots, and active memory profile before testing. If an error appears, treat it as evidence of a problem somewhere in the tested memory subsystem—not automatic proof that a particular RAM stick is defective.
What to prepare before you test
- A USB flash drive: MemTest86 boots from USB and runs independently of the installed operating system. PassMark also offers an optional preconfigured USB drive; its documentation does not specify a minimum capacity or required flash-drive model. See PassMark’s MemTest86 site.
- A UEFI-compatible system: PassMark documents support for UEFI systems with Intel or AMD x86/x86-64 processors and ARM64 processors. Check the MemTest86 UEFI user guide for platform details.
- Your configuration notes: Record each DIMM’s identity and slot, whether the modules have matching specifications, and whether the system is using standard JEDEC settings or an enabled XMP/EXPO profile. MemTest86 configuration options can check JEDEC, XMP, and EXPO profile speeds; see PassMark’s configuration guide.
Keep in mind that no memory test can test the memory occupied by the test program itself, and UEFI firmware also uses some memory. The test therefore does not cover every byte installed in the system.
Prepare and start the USB test
- Create the bootable drive. Follow the USB preparation instructions on PassMark’s official MemTest86 site. The cited documentation does not establish a minimum USB capacity.
- Boot from the drive. Use your computer’s boot menu or firmware setup to select the USB device. Confirm that MemTest86 starts in UEFI mode; it runs outside Windows or another installed operating system.
- Check whether execution is stable. UEFI firmware supplies services MemTest86 relies on, including multiprocessor services. Older or incomplete implementations can limit parallel testing or cause a halt. If execution is unstable or firmware support is suspect, PassMark documents single-CPU mode as a workaround for some cases. Consult the UEFI user guide and support page.
- Run the test and note the conditions. Keep a record of the modules installed, their slots, the active memory profile, and whether the test used parallel or single-CPU mode. Those details make comparisons useful if an error occurs.
Compare runs by changing one factor at a time
If you see errors, repeat testing under deliberate, documented configurations. Changing one relevant factor at a time helps distinguish a problem associated with a particular module from one that appears only under a specific system configuration.
| Comparison | What it can help investigate |
|---|---|
| Each DIMM individually versus all modules installed | Whether errors appear only with multiple modules in place. If individual tests are clear but the combined setup errors, investigate multi-channel operation, module compatibility, and motherboard support. |
| Matching specifications versus mixed modules | Whether differing module specifications may contribute to instability or incompatibility. |
| JEDEC settings versus the enabled XMP/EXPO profile | Whether errors are associated with the selected memory profile or speed. MemTest86 configuration options include checks for JEDEC, XMP, and EXPO profile speeds. |
| Parallel CPU mode versus single-CPU mode | Whether execution problems may be related to firmware support for multiprocessor services. Single-CPU mode is a workaround for some platform cases, not a general diagnosis of faulty RAM. |
When errors appear only with modules installed together, check that their specifications match and consult the motherboard maker’s compatible-memory information. PassMark discusses these troubleshooting cases in its memory error troubleshooting guide.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What an error does—and does not—tell you
A MemTest86 error is a reason to investigate the tested memory subsystem, but it does not identify the failed component on its own. PassMark says memory modules commonly account for errors, while also noting that the test exercises the CPU, caches, and motherboard. Component incompatibility and system configuration can matter too. Use the test result alongside controlled comparisons rather than treating one error as a definitive DIMM diagnosis. See PassMark’s troubleshooting guidance.
If a module errors when tested individually, that makes the module a stronger suspect, but the result still does not uniquely establish the cause. If errors occur only when modules are together, focus on the combined configuration, including multi-channel operation, matching specifications, and the board’s supported-memory information.

When ECC testing requires specialist equipment
Ordinary memory error screening and validation of ECC error handling are different tasks. ECC testing requires compatible hardware. PassMark’s error-injection tester is a specialized DDR4 DIMM interposer for injecting single- and double-bit errors in ECC-capable systems; it is not a routine prerequisite for testing a typical PC. See PassMark’s product information and the UEFI user guide.
