Start by finding out what your interview will actually cover. Backend interviews vary by employer, team, seniority, location and role; there is no universal 2026 interview loop. Ask your recruiter about the scheduled rounds, coding format, permitted language and tools, system-design expectations and target level. Then prioritize practice against those answers and the job description.
Find out what the interview includes before you study
Read the job description for signals about programming languages, databases, service architecture, cloud or infrastructure, reliability and seniority. Use those clues to build a focused plan, not a generic list of every backend subject.
Ask your recruiting contact:
- Which interview rounds are scheduled, and what does each assess?
- Will coding be live or an asynchronous assessment?
- Which language, editor or other tools may I use?
- Is system design included, and what level of detail is expected?
- What level is the role targeting?
Amazon explicitly advises candidates to contact their recruiting point of contact about likely interview topics. Its published SDE II process is one employer-specific example, not a template for backend interviews generally. Google’s role listings also describe qualifications and preferred experience; they do not promise that every listed subject will appear in an interview. See Amazon’s software-development interview topics, Google’s early-career software-engineer listing and Google Careers interview guidance.
Practice coding as a conversation
Interview coding is not just about reaching an answer. You need to make your reasoning and the quality of your implementation visible. Amazon’s SDE II guidance says, “Expect to be asked to write syntactically correct code—no pseudo code,” and emphasizes scalable, robust, well-tested code, edge cases and invalid inputs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Restate the task. Confirm what the input and output mean.
- Clarify constraints. Ask about input size, assumptions, edge cases and invalid values that could change the solution.
- Explain an approach. Give the interviewer a concise plan before you code, including why it fits the constraints.
- Implement working code. Use a language you can write fluently without relying on autocomplete.
- Test deliberately. Walk through a normal case and boundary cases; check the behavior you discussed.
- Analyze and adapt. State time and space costs, then consider how you would respond to a follow-up or changed constraint.
Practice common data structures and algorithms, but do not make memorizing solutions the goal. Amazon says interviewers look at how candidates apply knowledge, and Google’s guidance highlights coding, technical knowledge and speaking through answers. For a possible practice resource, Google Careers names Cracking the Coding Interview; treat it as optional, not a replacement for practice tailored to your role.
Refresh backend foundations in proportion to the role
Amazon’s topic list includes programming languages, data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, databases, distributed computing, operating systems and internet topics. Google’s early-career listing names programming languages and data structures or algorithms as minimum qualifications, with web or mobile development, Unix/Linux, distributed and parallel systems, networking, large software systems and security among preferred experience areas. Those lists are useful signals, not a guarantee of interview questions.

For a backend-oriented baseline, review:
- Data and persistence: SQL, data modeling, indexes and transactions.
- Service communication: HTTP and API behavior, plus networking concepts relevant to the job.
- Concurrency and distributed work: concurrency, queues, caching and the trade-offs involved when components communicate or fail.
- Operations and reliability: failure handling and observability, especially for roles that own services in production.
- Language and platform: the language named in the job description, along with operating-system or infrastructure topics the role emphasizes.
This checklist translates the employers’ broad topic categories into backend study areas. Prioritize the ones supported by the job description and recruiter guidance rather than trying to master every item equally.
Prepare for system design if the role calls for it
For experienced or infrastructure-oriented roles, rehearse designing a service from requirements to trade-offs. Begin by establishing who will use it, expected workload, latency and availability needs, data requirements and constraints. Then outline APIs and storage, identify likely bottlenecks and failure modes, and explain how the design could scale.

Amazon says SDE II candidates should expect at least one software systems design question in its published process. Its stated design objectives include practicality, accuracy, efficiency, reliability, optimization and scalability. That is a useful example of what one employer values, but confirm whether and how design is assessed for your target role.
Build specific examples from your work
Prepare concise accounts of a difficult technical decision, a failure and recovery, collaboration and a project’s impact. Amazon recommends using specific past examples and the STAR structure: situation, task, action and result. Include metrics or data only where applicable and where you can substantiate them.

For each substantial project, be ready to explain:
- What problem the system addressed and what you personally contributed.
- Which alternatives you considered and why you chose your approach.
- How you tested, operated or improved the system.
- What went wrong, how you responded and what changed afterward.
- What the outcome was, using numbers only when you can support them.
Keep the account focused on your decisions and actions; a project deep dive is more useful than a broad claim about what the team built.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rehearse the confirmed interview setup
Once you know the format, practice in a way that resembles it. For live coding, explain your reasoning while typing. For a timed assessment or a specified editor, rehearse that environment if the recruiter confirms it. Amazon advises candidates who are rusty to practice without an IDE, and its SDE II page describes a particular online assessment; neither detail should be assumed to apply to another employer.

Amazon’s published SDE II page describes an online assessment with 90 minutes for two technical questions, followed by 20 minutes of system-design scenarios and an eight-minute work-style survey; it then describes four 55-minute interviews. These are the durations and counts Amazon publishes for that SDE II process, not general backend-interview statistics. Check the page and your recruiter’s information for the process relevant to your application: Amazon SDE II Interview Prep.
Choose your study emphasis by the role
Use the interview details and job description to decide which preparation deserves the most time. The following distinctions help frame that decision; they do not predict a particular employer’s loop.
- Early-career versus experienced: prioritize the qualifications and responsibilities stated for the level, and ask whether system design is expected.
- Product backend versus infrastructure-heavy: emphasize the service, data and reliability concerns the role owns; infrastructure-oriented work may call for more distributed-systems depth.
- Coding only versus coding plus design: allocate practice to the rounds confirmed by the recruiter instead of assuming every role includes the same mix.
- Live interview versus online assessment: practice communication for live sessions and the confirmed tools and timing for an assessment.
- Individual coding versus behavioral and project discussion: prepare both implementation practice and concrete examples if the schedule includes both.
For employer-specific guidance, see Amazon’s software-development topics, Google’s early-career role listing and Google Careers interview guidance. The Google role listing is specific to the listed early-career position, while the Google guidance is published on the China careers site; neither establishes a universal interview format.
