Android Auto can still be useful without cell service, particularly for driving directions if you download Google Maps offline maps before you leave. But Google does not guarantee that every Android Auto feature will keep working after your phone loses its cellular connection. Plan for offline navigation, and verify the features you depend on with your own phone and car.
What works without cell service—and what is uncertain
Android Auto can display navigation from Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. That does not by itself establish that the projected interface or every app feature will continue working without service. Google’s Android Auto setup documentation lists an active data plan and says to keep the phone within range of a mobile data network during setup; it does not clarify whether cellular service is required for every later use.
The practical distinction is between tasks prepared on the phone and services that need a live internet connection. A downloaded map may support offline driving directions, while live traffic, online search, or other connected features may be unavailable or limited. Check how the parts you need behave on your own setup before relying on them.

Prepare Google Maps for offline driving
Google Maps on an Android phone can guide you offline when the entire driving route is within a map area downloaded in advance. Google Maps Help puts the key condition plainly: “If your internet connection is slow or unavailable, your offline maps can guide you to your destination as long as the entire route is within the offline map.”

- While online, sign in and download the area. In Google Maps, download the map covering your expected drive. Google says the map can be saved on the phone or an SD card.
- Check that the route fits. Inspect the saved coverage and make sure your full planned route—not just the start and destination—is inside the downloaded area.
- Open the destination before departure. While connected, confirm the destination and route, then make sure the map is available on the phone.
- Check map freshness and availability. Google Maps attempts to update an offline map when it is due to expire within 15 days and the phone is connected to Wi-Fi. You can also update it manually. Downloading maps is not available in some countries or regions.
- Verify Android Auto on your setup. Before a trip where connectivity matters, test whether the downloaded map and the functions you need appear and behave as expected through your phone and vehicle.
Offline Maps limitations
- Offline driving does not provide traffic information or alternate routes.
- Offline transit, bicycling, and walking directions are unavailable.
- Do not assume online place search or continuous rerouting will work without an internet connection.
Check Android Auto’s connection requirements
For wired Android Auto, Google lists a compatible car and a high-quality USB cable. The cable connects the phone to the car; it does not provide cellular service or download map data. Match the cable ends to your phone and vehicle.
Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone and car, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google says initial wireless pairing uses Bluetooth and recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup. Because Google’s setup page does not specify what happens to each feature after cellular service drops, do not treat the setup requirements as a guarantee that Android Auto always works—or always fails—offline.

Plan for music, podcasts, messages, and voice features
Android Auto uses compatible media apps. Google advises signing into the app before starting Android Auto, and some apps require a subscription or premium account. Its guidance does not guarantee offline playback for a particular app or promise a universal offline mode.
If you want audio on a no-service drive, download the podcast episodes or playlists in your chosen app while online, then test playback before leaving. Treat calls, texts, and voice-assistant tasks as setup-dependent: whether they work can depend on your phone, vehicle, app, account, and available network connection.

Do not confuse Android Auto with Google built-in
Android Auto projects phone apps to a compatible car. Google’s separate guidance for “Google built-in” describes Maps running in supported vehicles. Its offline-map instructions—including the statement that built-in maps expire one year after download—apply to that in-car system, not to offline maps downloaded in Google Maps on an Android phone. Do not use Google built-in guidance as proof that phone-projected Android Auto features work offline.

- Download the Google Maps area while online and signed in.
- Confirm your entire planned driving route fits within the saved area.
- Update the map if needed, and open the destination before departure.
- Download any audio you want to play and verify it works offline.
- Test Android Auto and the specific features you need with your phone and vehicle.
- Expect no live traffic or alternate routes from Google Maps offline driving directions.
