Use OBS Studio to play your 720p videos and send them to YouTube Live: add one file as a Media Source or build a multi-file playlist with VLC Video, then configure a 1280×720 H.264 stream. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p live ingest at either 30 or 60 fps, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Start with 30 fps if your PC is constrained, then test the complete setup; a PC’s price or an internet connection’s location cannot tell you whether it will sustain your stream.

Choose the right workflow for your videos

OBS Studio can play files directly, so you do not need to play the video in another window and capture your desktop. Choose the source based on how you want the playlist to behave:

Need OBS source What to know
Play one local video Media Source Supports common local video formats. Use this when you do not need a multi-file playlist.
Play several local videos in sequence VLC Video Requires VLC to be installed. You can set file order, shuffle, and playlist looping. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC.

OBS documents these source options and their controls in its Media Sources guide. Playlist looping repeats the files in the source; it does not itself configure YouTube or ensure the stream remains online.

Prepare consistent 720p video files

For standard-definition-range (SDR) video, use 1280×720 progressive video and, where practical, keep a consistent frame size and frame rate across the playlist. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, and a frame rate matching the recording. These are recommendations for files uploaded to YouTube, not the bitrate settings for a live encoder.

File frame rate YouTube’s recommended 720p SDR upload bitrate
Standard frame rate: 24, 25, or 30 fps 5 Mbps
High frame rate: 48, 50, or 60 fps 7.5 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. They describe the file, not the bitrate OBS should send to YouTube Live. If your source is already a 720p recording, avoid unnecessary conversions: each conversion can take time and may reduce quality.

Build and check the playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and add a scene for the stream. In the Sources panel, click the plus button and choose VLC Video for multiple files. If you are streaming a single file, choose Media Source instead.
  2. For VLC Video, add the local files in the order you want them played. Enable loop if the sequence should repeat, or shuffle if you want a changing order. Keep the intended order if the videos form a sequence or depend on continuity.
  3. Confirm the source displays in the OBS preview. Check that the picture fits the canvas, that audio is present at a sensible level, and that no file is missing or unsupported. Play through enough of the playlist to verify transitions and sound.
  4. Install VLC if OBS does not offer or load the VLC Video source. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; OBS calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.

Set OBS for YouTube Live at 720p

In OBS, open Settings and configure the video canvas and output for 1280×720. Select a frame rate that your source and PC can sustain. For a constrained PC, 30 fps is a reasonable first test; choose 60 fps only when the source benefits from it and your system performs reliably under load.

Live setting Starting point for a 720p YouTube stream
Resolution 1280×720
Frame rate 30 fps as a cautious initial test; 60 fps if the source and PC sustain it
Video codec H.264
Rate control CBR
Bitrate 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended by YouTube for both 720p30 and 720p60
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, not upload-file targets or a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance specifies the H.264 bitrate and keyframe recommendations. A lower setting within the supported range may be necessary if your connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate, but validate the result in a real test rather than assuming it will work.

Pick an encoder your PC can handle

If OBS offers compatible hardware encoding, it can offload some encoding work from the CPU. Hardware encoding is not automatically the best choice for every PC: performance and image quality vary by hardware and encoder. OBS explains the trade-offs in its Hardware Encoding guide.

There is no single budget-PC specification that guarantees this workload. OBS notes that requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its System Requirements page does not promise that a machine meeting a basic compatibility threshold will stream a specific playlist smoothly. Close unnecessary applications and test the actual files, scene, encoder, and frame rate you intend to use.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Start a YouTube live broadcast in the intended configuration and check the Live Control Room preview before sharing the stream with viewers.
  2. Test representative video with movement and audio similar to what the playlist will contain. A static menu or silent clip will not expose the same issues as motion and sound.
  3. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding problems and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Look for dropped frames, stuttering, missing audio, distortion, or a stream that disconnects.
  4. If the test is unstable, change one factor at a time: try 30 fps instead of 60, reduce the output bitrate while remaining within YouTube’s guidance where possible, or switch between software and compatible hardware encoding. Retest after each change.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance also recommends testing with comparable audio and movement and monitoring stream health.

Account for copyright and YouTube channel rules

Having the right encoder settings does not give you permission to broadcast the videos. Use content you own or have the necessary rights to stream, including music, images, and any material inside the videos. YouTube may detect or restrict copyrighted content during a live broadcast. Review the platform’s current live-streaming and monetization requirements in YouTube Studio and the relevant YouTube policies before scheduling a long-running playlist. A stream being technically available does not guarantee monetization, recommendation, or eligibility under YouTube’s rules.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing or fails to open VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS and check the source again.
Video stutters or OBS reports dropped frames The PC, encoder, or connection may not sustain the selected settings. Test at 30 fps, inspect the selected encoder, lower bitrate if needed, and repeat the representative workload test. Distinguish network drops from encoding or rendering issues in OBS and YouTube’s health indicators.
Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health The outgoing bitrate may be unstable, or the encoder settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. Use H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate your connection can sustain. Check the Live Control Room health details.
Playlist stops after the last file Looping is not enabled for the VLC playlist. Open the VLC Video source properties and enable playlist looping; verify the playlist reaches and repeats its final item during a test.
Video plays but there is no sound The source may have no audio, OBS may not be capturing it, or levels may be muted. Check the file’s audio outside OBS, inspect the OBS audio mixer and mute controls, and confirm audio in the YouTube preview.
YouTube does not accept the stream key The key may be incorrect, outdated, or associated with another stream configuration. Copy the current key from YouTube Studio carefully, keep it private, and confirm OBS is using the intended YouTube service and stream.
