You may not need to convert your 4K 60fps video at all. If OBS can play the file correctly, add it as a looping Media Source—or use a VLC Video source for a playlist—and preserve its frame size and frame rate. Conversion can introduce another encode, and YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so no workflow can guarantee a completely lossless path from file to every viewer.
Do you need to convert the video?
Not necessarily. OBS documents support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM video formats. If your file opens and plays correctly in OBS at the intended resolution and frame rate, use the original rather than converting it just because you plan to loop it. A filename extension alone does not establish that the codecs or profiles inside the file will work on your system. OBS documents Media Sources and supported formats.
Avoiding conversion avoids one potential re-encode, but it does not mean the whole broadcast remains unchanged. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, including the source feed. “Without quality loss” is therefore best understood as avoiding an unnecessary conversion before streaming—not as a guarantee that every viewer receives an identical, lossless copy. YouTube explains live-stream transcoding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLoop one video or a playlist in OBS
Loop a single video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene: select the Sources panel, click +, then choose Media Source.
- Select the local video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm that playback restarts after the clip ends and that both picture and audio behave as expected.
Loop multiple videos
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS if it is not already installed.
- Add a VLC Video source from the OBS Sources panel.
- Add the desired files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- Preview the playlist through a full transition, including the end of the final clip and return to the beginning.
OBS’s Media Sources guide describes the Loop and Loop Playlist controls. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Set OBS for 4K at 60 fps
In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution to the video’s intended 4K frame size and the frame rate to 60 fps. Check both the base canvas and output resolution so an unintended downscale does not undo the setting. Match the source’s actual frame size and frame rate; changing these settings cannot restore detail or motion that was absent from the recording.
In Settings > Output, configure the encoder for YouTube’s selected ingest codec and bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these 2160p60 recommendations: YouTube live encoder settings.

These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a promise of a particular visual result. Use CBR (constant bitrate), set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and RTMPS for the connection. At 4K/2160, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Create the YouTube live stream and test it
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding connection settings in OBS. Treat the stream key as private; anyone who gets it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Start the OBS stream and check the YouTube preview before making the broadcast public or relying on it for a long loop.
- Test representative motion, scene changes, and audio—not only a static frame. Check for stutter, dropped frames, audio problems, incorrect scaling, and whether the loop restarts as intended.
- During the broadcast, keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and OBS statistics so you can catch a connection or encoding problem early.
If the channel has never streamed before, YouTube says enabling live streaming can take up to 24 hours. Set up and verify the channel in advance rather than waiting until the intended start time. YouTube’s live-streaming enablement information.
When conversion is necessary
Convert only if the original file is incompatible with OBS or does not play reliably on the system you will use. A suitable conversion depends on details such as the source codec, bit depth, color or HDR status, audio format, and desired output codec; without those details, there is no single command or preset that can be recommended as universally lossless.

- Keep the original file and convert a separate copy.
- Preserve the frame size and 60 fps frame rate where possible; do not assume a conversion can add detail or smoothness that the source does not contain.
- Inspect the converted copy in OBS and review its image, motion, color, and audio before using it in a long broadcast.
- Do not treat YouTube’s upload-encoding guidance as a guarantee for live delivery. Its upload advice says to use the recording’s original frame rate; live streams are separately transcoded for delivery. YouTube upload-encoding recommendations.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Before looping a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast its video and audio on YouTube. A loop does not change the underlying copyright status of a clip, song, or other material. Also consider whether a channel built around repeated recordings offers enough original value for its intended purpose; meeting technical streaming settings does not itself resolve YouTube policy or monetization questions. Review the applicable YouTube rules for the channel and the material you plan to use.
Troubleshoot common problems
OBS will not open or play the file
The extension may be supported while the codec or profile inside the file is not compatible with your system. Test the file in OBS; if it fails or behaves inconsistently, make a separate compatible copy and test it before streaming.

The stream is soft, scaled incorrectly, or not 60 fps
Check the source’s actual properties, then verify the OBS base canvas, output resolution, and frame-rate settings. Confirm YouTube is receiving the intended stream configuration. A setting change cannot recover detail or frame rate missing from the recording.
The stream buffers or reports poor health
Compare the selected codec and bitrate with YouTube’s 2160p60 guidance above. Confirm that the connection can sustain the bitrate, reduce competing network use, and monitor OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators. A listed minimum is not the recommended target for the selected codec.
Playback does not repeat as expected
For one file, verify Loop in the Media Source properties. For a playlist, verify VLC is installed, the intended files are in the VLC Video playlist, and Loop Playlist is enabled. Preview the complete cycle rather than assuming the setting took effect.
