For faster next-page navigation, use WordPress 6.8’s built-in speculative loading rather than rel="preload". Core can prefetch (or, when configured, prerender) likely destination documents for eligible logged-out visitors on sites using pretty permalinks. Keep the default conservative setting initially, exclude every state-changing or personalized URL, and only increase eagerness after checking bandwidth, cache, and origin capacity.
What “preloading a link” means in WordPress
There are two different performance jobs that are often called preloading:

The older link[rel="prerender"] value was not true prerendering. The modern Speculation Rules API can prerender a document and run its JavaScript, but it must be used carefully for pages with state or personalization.
Use WordPress core first (6.8 and later)
WordPress 6.8 introduced speculative loading in core. Its default configuration uses conservative prefetching for eligible frontend URLs, normally for logged-out visitors on sites with pretty permalinks. Browsers that do not implement the API simply do not receive the speculative request.

- Update WordPress to 6.8 or newer and confirm that the site uses pretty permalinks.
- Test as a logged-out visitor in a supported Chromium-based browser.
- Leave the conservative default enabled while you inspect server, cache, and bandwidth metrics.
- Add exclusions for URLs that can change state or reveal personalized data.
WordPress core already excludes /wp-login.php and /wp-admin/*. Extend that protection for your own site with the wp_speculation_rules_href_exclude_paths filter.

} );Use the paths as they appear in your site’s URLs. Also exclude nonce-bearing endpoints, search or filter URLs that expose private results, membership pages, and any custom endpoint that performs an action simply when requested.

Choose prefetch or prerender and set eagerness
The wp_speculation_rules_configuration filter accepts the mode prefetch or prerender, and the eagerness values conservative, moderate, or eager. Returning null disables speculative loading for that request.

} );Start with prefetch and conservative. Move to moderate only when cache-hit rates and origin capacity remain healthy. Use prerender sparingly: it executes the destination page’s JavaScript before the click, so analytics, personalization, mutations, and third-party scripts may run earlier than expected.

When the Performance Team plugin is useful
The WordPress Performance Team’s plugin provides a user interface and uses moderate prerendering as its documented default. It documents support in Chromium-based browsers from version 121; Safari and Firefox ignore the API. The plugin can be useful when you need a dashboard-driven setup or more aggressive defaults, but the same URL exclusions and capacity checks still apply.
External origins need resource hints, not document prefetch
If the delay comes from a third-party host—such as a font, API, analytics, or CDN origin—use resource hints to establish connections. WordPress’s wp_resource_hints() supports hints such as dns-prefetch. These hints resolve DNS or prepare connections to a dependency host; they do not prefetch an internal WordPress page.

Safety checklist before increasing eagerness
- Exclude login, admin, logout, cart, checkout, account, payment, order, and other state-changing paths.
- Exclude URLs containing nonces, one-time tokens, or user-specific parameters.
- Check that GET requests do not mutate data; speculative requests can happen without a click.
- Verify that cache rules do not store personalized responses for other visitors.
- Watch origin request volume, bandwidth, CPU, cache-hit rate, and error rate after each change.
- Test analytics, consent tools, ads, forms, and third-party scripts under prerendering.
How to test whether it is helping
- Record a baseline for representative landing and article pages, including Core Web Vitals and origin metrics.
- Open the site in a Chromium-based browser while logged out and inspect the page’s speculation rules in developer tools.
- Follow normal internal links and confirm that eligible destinations are fetched or prerendered.
- Repeat with Safari and Firefox to confirm the expected fallback: ordinary navigation without speculative benefit.
- Compare navigation performance and server metrics over enough traffic to avoid judging from a single visit.
- Roll back to conservative prefetch or return
nullfrom the configuration filter if resource use or side effects rise.
WordPress Core Performance Team reporting for 2025 cited an approximately 1.9% median improvement in the Largest Contentful Paint passing rate. That is a population-level result, not a promise for every site; the outcome depends on navigation patterns, caching, browser support, and server capacity.

No speculative requests appear
Check that the site is running WordPress 6.8 or newer, visitors are logged out, pretty permalinks are enabled, and the browser supports the Speculation Rules API. Safari and Firefox currently ignore the API documented by the Performance Team.

A destination still feels slow
Speculation only helps when the visitor follows a URL that was eligible and predicted. Improve the destination’s caching, HTML response time, critical resources, and third-party connections separately; use rel="preload" only for resources required by that destination’s current page.
Server load or bandwidth increased
Reduce eagerness, switch from prerender to prefetch, narrow the eligible URL set, and verify that responses are cacheable. If necessary, disable speculative loading for the request with the configuration filter.
An action happened before a click
Remove the affected path from the exclusion filter immediately. Then audit GET handlers, nonces, analytics, forms, and third-party scripts for side effects before considering prerender again.
