Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYes—you can power several devices from one supply, but only when the complete system provides the correct voltage, enough current and total wattage, compatible connectors and protocols, and suitable protection. A multi-port USB-C charger is ideal for many USB devices; identical-voltage equipment can use a regulated DC supply and fused distribution; mixed voltages need converters or a multi-output supply; network devices may use standards-based PoE. Mains appliances should remain on a properly rated power strip or UPS.
First identify what “one power supply” means
These arrangements are electrically different:
- A multi-port USB charger or USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger.
- An externally powered USB hub or USB-C dock.
- One AC adapter feeding several identical-voltage DC devices.
- A desktop DC supply feeding a fused distribution block.
- A USB-C PD source feeding purpose-built converters or a dock.
- A PoE switch or injector powering network equipment.
- A battery or power station supplying several loads.
- Several supplies connected in parallel or series.
Choose the architecture before choosing a wattage. A charger designed for USB negotiation is not a substitute for a 12-volt industrial supply, and a passive barrel splitter is not a USB hub.
Choose the right architecture
| Devices | Suitable solution | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Phones, tablets, laptops and other USB-C devices | Reputable multi-port USB-C PD charger | Ports may share a total budget; check simultaneous output. |
| USB peripherals needing data | Externally powered USB hub or USB-C dock | Upstream and downstream power limits may be lower than the charger’s headline rating. |
| Several devices with the same DC voltage | Regulated supply, fuse or breaker, and distribution block | Polarity, connectors, wire gauge and voltage drop must match. |
| 5-, 9-, 12- or 19-volt devices together | Multi-output supply or individually rated DC-DC converters | Never connect unlike voltages directly in parallel. |
| Compatible cameras, access points or phones on Ethernet | Standards-based PoE switch or injector | Per-port class and the switch’s total PoE budget limit the load. |
| AC appliances | Rated power strip, UPS or distribution unit | Do not improvise a low-voltage DC distribution system for mains equipment. |
The four compatibility checks
1. Voltage
The supply voltage must match the device input unless a correctly rated regulator or negotiated protocol converts it. A 12-volt device must not be connected directly to 19 volts, and a 5-volt USB device must not receive an unregulated 9-, 12- or 24-volt output. A plug that fits proves nothing about voltage.
2. Current
The supply must be able to provide at least the required current. A device marked 12 V, 2 A requires 24 W (P = V × I). A regulated 12 V, 5 A supply can normally power it; the device draws the current it needs rather than being forced to consume all 5 A. This assumes correct polarity, connector ratings and a suitable load type. Batteries, LEDs, motors and laboratory loads may require specialized current control.

The alligator clip cable (5.5*2.1mm female to clip) allows you to connect to bare wires, breadboards, or DIY projects for hobbyists and repairs
3. Total wattage and headroom
Add the maximum or realistic worst-case input of every device, including hubs, docks and converters:
Example: 65 W laptop + 30 W monitor + 20 W phone + 10 W camera = 125 W.
Allow for startup surges, cable and conversion losses, heat and future expansion. A general planning margin of about 20–30% gives 150–162.5 W for that example; it is an engineering rule of thumb, not a universal code requirement.
4. Connector and polarity
For barrel and custom DC wiring, verify outer and inner diameters, center-positive or center-negative polarity, plug current rating, cable gauge and locking or keyed features. Reversed polarity can destroy equipment. Underrated contacts can overheat even when the supply’s wattage looks adequate.
USB-C Power Delivery: usually the easiest consumer solution
USB-C is the connector shape; USB Power Delivery is the negotiation protocol. In standards-compliant equipment, the source and device agree on an allowed voltage and power instead of placing a single high voltage on every port. USB-IF documents power delivery up to 240 W in the relevant USB-C PD specifications when the source, sink, cable and operating mode all support it: USB-IF USB Charger and Power Delivery. The USB-IF document library lists USB Power Delivery Revision 3.2 Version 1.2 dated May 20, 2026; specifications can change, so verify current compliance information at USB-IF documents.

Shared capacity versus per-port capacity
Multi-port chargers commonly advertise a total figure that is divided among ports. USB-IF distinguishes assured-capacity chargers from shared-capacity designs in its power-delivery material: USB Power Delivery presentation. A product labeled “200 W, six ports” might provide 140 W alone on one port, 100 W on two selected ports, and lower outputs elsewhere. Plugging in another device can trigger renegotiation, briefly interrupting or reducing a laptop’s charging power.
Always find the manufacturer’s power-distribution table. Compare both the highest single-port rating and the permitted combinations, not just the headline total.
USB-C sizing example
| Device | Maximum input |
|---|---|
| Laptop | 100 W |
| Tablet | 30 W |
| Phone | 25 W |
| Headphones | 5 W |
| Total | 160 W |
The charger must offer at least 100 W on the laptop’s port, 30 W, 25 W and 5 W on the other ports, and at least 160 W total plus sensible headroom. A 200 W model may work; one that drops the laptop port to 65 W when other ports are occupied will not.
Powered hubs and docks
Charging station
A charging station primarily supplies power and may provide no data connection. It is appropriate for phones, tablets and accessories.
Powered USB hub
An externally powered hub adds USB data ports and power, but some of its input is reserved for its own electronics and upstream connection. A bus-powered hub cannot deliver the same downstream power as an externally powered one.

- Match the regulated output voltage to every device.
- Size the supply for continuous load and startup current.
- Fuse branches independently where practical.
- Select wire and connectors for the expected current and length; account for voltage drop.
- Label branches, provide strain relief and insulate or enclose terminals.
- Prevent unused outputs from being accidentally shorted.
- Understand whether the supply is grounded or floating and keep circuit separation appropriate.

When devices need different voltages
Multi-output supply
A purpose-built multi-output supply gives each voltage a documented rating and may provide isolated outputs. It costs more and can restrict which outputs may be used together.
Higher-voltage distribution with point-of-load converters
A 24 V supply could feed a 24 V device directly, a 12 V buck converter, a 9 V converter and a 5 V USB-C PD module. Higher distribution voltage reduces current for a given power level, but every converter adds heat, efficiency loss, noise and another failure point. Fuse and rate each branch.

PoE for networked equipment
Use an active, standards-based PoE switch or injector when cameras, access points, phones or sensors support the same IEEE PoE family. The source detects and classifies a compatible powered device before applying power. Passive PoE can apply voltage without that detection and is not interchangeable with standards-based PoE.
Check the switch’s total PoE budget, per-port class limit, switch self-consumption, cable loss and startup demand. PoE forwarding can power a downstream device, but each hop consumes budget and adds conversion and cable losses. See Microchip’s PoE power-forwarding explanation and the class and detection information in Neutrik’s PoE document.
Daisy chaining and multiple supplies
When chaining is designed in
Purpose-built USB hubs, docks, PoE forwarding equipment and manufacturer-approved monitor chains include the protection and power budgeting needed for chaining. Designed distribution also controls common impedance and voltage drop, as described by Schneider Electric: Schneider Electric distribution guidance.
What not to chain
- Random barrel splitters in series.
- Passive USB-C Y-cables intended to share power.
- A device’s DC output unless the manufacturer says it is a power output for that load.
- Thin extension leads carrying high current.
- Two supply outputs tied together without current sharing or OR-ing circuitry.
Parallel and series supplies
Parallel supplies can increase current only when designed for current sharing, reverse-current protection and matched output voltage. Series supplies can increase voltage only when insulation, isolation, grounding and load compatibility are verified. ASME explains the design considerations at ASME: connecting supplies in parallel or series. For ordinary installations, do not make either connection unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it or a qualified engineer has designed the system.

A practical setup procedure
- List every device’s input voltage, maximum current or wattage, connector, polarity and protocol.
- Include startup, motor, disk or converter loads and the consumption of hubs and docks.
- Group devices by USB-C PD, fixed-voltage USB, identical-voltage DC, mixed-voltage DC, PoE and AC mains.
- Select the matching charger, hub, DC distribution, converter, PoE or AC architecture.
- Verify per-port and simultaneous-use limits.
- Use cables and connectors rated for the required current and protocol.
- Add a reasonable design margin for losses, heat, startup and expansion.
- Install fuses, breakers, current limiting and enclosed terminals in custom DC systems.
- Connect one device first, verify voltage and stable operation, then add loads one at a time.
- Stop immediately if a connector or cable becomes hot, a device resets, voltage sags or the supply shuts down.
Troubleshooting common failures
A device resets when another is plugged in
Shared-capacity renegotiation, insufficient total power, cable resistance or a port-priority rule is likely. Check the allocation table, move the high-power device to the best-rated port or use a charger with independent outputs. Equipment that cannot tolerate interruptions should have a separate supply.
A laptop charges slowly or reports an unsupported adapter
The port may be limited to 65 W, the cable may not support the requested mode, the laptop may expect proprietary behavior, or the charger may have entered shared mode. Heavy laptop use can also exceed available charging power.
A barrel connector gets hot
Disconnect it. Check polarity, contact fit, current, regulation and splitter quality. Heat indicates excessive resistance or overload, not normal use of “all available amps.”
The supply shuts down at startup
Inrush, motor or disk spin-up, or converter startup may trigger overcurrent protection. Use a supply with documented transient capacity or a controlled, staged startup.

Switch-mode supplies and converters can add ripple or electromagnetic interference. Sensitive audio, radio, camera and measurement equipment may need filtering, isolation, lower-noise regulation or separate supplies.
Ground-loop symptoms occur
Common supply grounds combined with USB, Ethernet or audio shields can create unwanted current paths. Isolation or a revised grounding topology may be required.
