Yes. A case fan can run without a computer if you connect it to a compatible power source. For a fan marked 12 V, use a regulated 12 V DC supply or a USB adapter that explicitly converts USB’s 5 V output to 12 V. Check the fan’s current rating, connector, and polarity before plugging it in; a plain USB cable is not a voltage converter.
Check the fan’s power requirements first
Read the label or manual for the exact fan. Match the supply voltage, and make sure its current capacity is at least as high as the fan’s rated current. Fan requirements vary: Apevia lists its CF512S-BK at 12 VDC and 0.25 A, while Akyga specifies 12 V and consumption below 0.1 A for its AW-12A-BR. Those figures describe those models, not all case fans. - Voltage: Use the voltage specified for your fan. Do not assume a 5 V USB port can power a 12 V fan at its intended voltage.
- Current: Check the supply or adapter’s output rating against the fan label. If you plan to power multiple fans, account for their combined requirements and the limits of the adapter or hub.
- Connector and polarity: The plug must fit, and the adapter must provide the correct polarity and pinout. A connector that fits physically is not enough to establish compatibility.
Choose a power source

Power one fan from USB
Use a USB-to-12 V case-fan adapter that specifically states it converts 5 V USB power for a 12 V fan. Sanwa lists its TK-PWFAN6 with built-in circuitry for this purpose and 3-pin and 4-pin fan connectors. Check its output rating against your fan before use; the product listing does not establish suitability for every fan. Sanwa TK-PWFAN6 product comparison page.
Power one fan from a 12 V DC supply
For a fan labeled 12 V, use a regulated 12 V DC supply with adequate current capacity. Connect it only through a compatible plug or adapter with the correct polarity and pinout. The fan and supply labels or manuals are the place to confirm those details; voltage alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Power fans through Molex
Some PC fans use Molex power connectors, and adapters or splitters are available for connecting compatible components. ARCTIC describes its Molex-to-fan splitter for 7 V and 12 V operation, but the splitter does not itself provide power: it still needs a suitable source. Use a correctly rated adapter rather than improvised rewiring or pin bridging. ARCTIC Case Fan 2 product page.
Power multiple fans or use speed control
A SATA-powered hub can distribute power to multiple fans, but check whether it also requires a motherboard fan-header signal for speed control. ARCTIC’s 10-port Case Fan Hub lists SATA power, ten outputs rated at 1 A each, and a 4-pin fan-header input that passes along the PWM signal. Its published maximum SATA input is 4.5 A. It is therefore not automatically a standalone, independently controlled solution without the required control input. ARCTIC Case Fan Hub specifications.

Know what may not work outside a PC
Powering the fan motor does not necessarily provide every feature the fan supports. Lighting, speed control, wireless functions, or an LCD may depend on a particular controller or connection. For example, LIAN LI says its UNI FAN TL Wireless fans can be powered through a 4-pin motherboard fan header or SATA power, while the LCD versions also require a motherboard USB 2.0 connection for the screen.
