You can play some Xbox disc games without inserting the disc each time by claiming a limited digital entitlement: insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc in a disc-capable Xbox One or Series X console, then launch the game. Eligibility is not universal, and Microsoft conditions that entitlement on keeping the qualifying disc. If you install a disc game using the traditional method instead, you still need the disc in the drive to play.
How do I play Xbox games without the disc?
Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature lets you claim a digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026, saying that players claim the entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. The announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support it, but not every title does. Xbox describes the launch selection as “thousands of titles,” not as a published exact count. Xbox’s announcement
- On a disc-capable Xbox One or Xbox Series X, insert the game disc.
- Launch the game. If the title qualifies, this is the step that claims the digital entitlement.
- Keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules condition the entitlement on continued possession of that disc.
Eligibility can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and Microsoft may change which discs qualify. Check the game on your console rather than assuming that every disc in a series, edition, or region is included. A supported title may also work with Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming only if that particular game supports those services. Xbox’s announcement

Do you still need the disc after installing an Xbox game?
Traditional disc installation
No: installing the game is not the same as acquiring a digital license. For a supported backward-compatible disc game played through the traditional disc-based route, Xbox says the console downloads the game, but you must leave the disc in the drive to play it. Xbox Backward Compatible Games

Disc-to-digital entitlement
The separate entitlement changes the play check for an eligible title, but it does not turn the game into an unrestricted digital purchase. Microsoft says the license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc, may be revalidated, and may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The entitlement cannot be transferred separately from the disc. Microsoft’s usage rules
Can you play Xbox disc games on Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not support disc-based games. It has no disc drive, so you cannot insert a disc to play a game or claim the disc-to-digital entitlement on that console. The claim flow announced by Xbox uses an Xbox One or Xbox Series X. A Series S can play a game when you have a compatible digital license or another supported access route. What are the alternatives if your disc is not eligible?
- Buy the digital Xbox version: If the game is available in the Xbox Store, a digital purchase gives you a digital license under Microsoft’s digital-game rules. Verify the exact title, edition, platform, region, and current price before buying.
- Use a subscription catalog: A subscription may provide access while the title is included and the applicable subscription conditions are met. Catalog availability and terms can change; subscription access is not the same as owning a digital purchase.
- Use the disc normally on compatible hardware: For a supported disc game played the traditional way, install it on a disc-capable console and keep the disc in the drive while playing. Xbox Series X has a UHD Blu-ray disc player; Series S does not. Microsoft’s console information and Xbox backward-compatibility guidance
Can you sell the disc after converting it to digital?
Do not sell or give away the qualifying disc if you intend to keep using its disc-to-digital entitlement. Microsoft says the entitlement depends on continued possession of that disc and may be revoked if you no longer possess it. The digital license is not transferable independently from the disc. Microsoft’s usage rules
How Xbox digital licenses and Home console sharing differ
A purchased digital game, a subscription catalog game, and a disc-to-digital entitlement are different access routes. Microsoft describes Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games as having a user-based license tied to the Microsoft account and a device-based license attached to the designated Home console. This Home console sharing applies to digital content; it does not convert a disc-based license into a digital one. Microsoft’s usage rules

Microsoft says the purchaser can change their Home console up to five times during a rolling one-year period. Other accounts using the designated Home console can access content licensed to that device, subject to Microsoft’s rules. On another console, the purchaser needs to be signed in and connected to access their digital content. Microsoft also says digital games can be installed across a reasonable number of Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, but a game can be played on only one console at a time.
