You can try an independently hosted browser build of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved by opening Mitchell Hynes’s Halo page. To play with friends, use its online multiplayer flow to choose a map and game mode, create a room invite, then send the link or code to your friends. The page describes private rooms and peer-to-peer connections when possible; it is not an official Halo or Xbox release.

PC Gamer reported on October 1, 2026, that the build had no matchmaking: players had to create rooms and coordinate by sharing links. That is a report of the service at that time, not a guarantee that its controls or availability will remain unchanged. The outlet also reported that gameplay connects peer-to-peer, so the host’s connection can affect the session.

Controls and what to expect
PC Gamer reported full mouse and keyboard support. The browser page also includes controller-oriented settings, but the available information does not identify a required controller or establish compatibility for particular models. A gamepad is an optional input choice, not a stated prerequisite.

What this browser version is—and is not
The host identifies the page as an independent browser build based on decompilation work in the halo-ce-universal projects. It is not presented as an official Halo or Xbox release. The related halo-re project says its goal is to study and create an open-source reimplementation of the original Xbox launch title, and that it does not include the original game executables or required assets; its documentation tells users to provide files from their own copy. Those project statements do not establish exactly how the browser host handles assets or settle the rights status of its distribution.
Rights-holder authorization for the browser distribution is not established by the available sources. PC Gamer characterized the legal situation as uncertain, so it would be inaccurate to call the browser version definitively authorized or definitively unlawful. Availability is also not assured: the page has experienced service disruption before, and an independently maintained project can change or disappear.

Why the browser build drew attention
PC Gamer reported that the developer said the browser game reached nearly 20,000 games within five hours across 115 countries shortly after launch. That is an early developer-reported usage figure relayed by the outlet, not independently audited telemetry.
