The right method depends on whether you want audio to keep playing on a phone with its screen locked, or want a TV’s sound to continue while its picture is off. For ambient noise on an iPhone, use Apple’s built-in Background Sounds. For YouTube audio on a phone, background playback requires an eligible Premium account. For TV listening, Roku documents a screen-off feature on Roku TVs.
Choose the method for your device and audio source

Play ambient sounds on an iPhone with the screen locked
Apple’s Background Sounds feature is a good first choice when you want ambient noise such as rain or ocean waves, rather than a particular video or a streaming catalog. Apple’s current iPhone guide documents this feature in its iOS 26 instructions.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds.
- Turn on Background Sounds and choose a sound. Apple says the selected sound file downloads to the iPhone, so playback does not depend on streaming that sound continuously from a video.
- Adjust the volume and configure the option that controls whether sounds stop when the iPhone is locked. Choose the setting that allows them to continue if you want to turn off the display by locking the phone.
- If you want playback to end automatically, set the available timer to stop the sound after your chosen interval.
- Lock the iPhone and check that the sound continues. You can also access Background Sounds through Control Center after adding or configuring its control.
Menu wording and availability can change with iOS versions. If the sound stops, return to Background Sounds and check the lock behavior setting before troubleshooting other audio settings.
Keep YouTube audio playing on a phone
YouTube’s mobile background playback is not the same as leaving an ordinary free video playing after locking the phone. YouTube Help says mobile background play is available in YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids when signed into an account with a YouTube Premium membership, where those apps are available. YouTube Music Help also describes background play for Premium members listening to music or podcasts while using other apps or with the screen off. Regional experiences may differ.

- Install or open the official YouTube or YouTube Music app available in your region.
- Sign in to the account that has the qualifying YouTube Premium membership.
- Start the music, meditation audio, or other content you want to hear.
- Lock the phone or switch to another app, then verify that playback continues. If it stops, confirm that you are signed into the membership account in the app you are using.
YouTube Music Help also lists downloads for offline listening and audio-only mode among its Premium features. Those are distinct from screen-off playback: availability and controls depend on the app and region, so check the options shown in your account rather than assuming every listener sees identical menus. The cited YouTube help pages establish the membership requirement, not a price or a particular plan bundle.
Turn off the picture but keep TV audio playing
If you mean a television whose sound continues while its picture is off, Roku documents a built-in screen-off listening feature for Roku TVs. Its support article names apps including YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, and Pandora. It is specific to Roku TVs; do not assume the same controls exist on another TV brand or on an external streaming player connected to a TV.

- Start the desired audio or video in a supported app on the Roku TV.
- Use the screen-off listening control or voice instructions in Roku’s current support guidance for your TV.
- Confirm that the picture turns off while audio continues. Use the TV’s normal controls to restore the picture or stop playback when finished.
Roku’s instructions and available controls may depend on the current TV interface. Follow the support instructions for your device rather than applying a Roku TV procedure to unrelated hardware.
Set a sleep timer and manage app visuals
For bedtime listening, set a timer in the playback app or in the phone’s sound controls before putting the device away. Then test whether the chosen source continues after locking; power-saving behavior and app settings can affect playback.

- Apple Background Sounds: Apple documents a timer to stop playback and a separate setting for whether sound stops when the iPhone locks.
- Calm: Calm documents sleep audio, playlists, Sleep Stories, background Scene sounds, and a sleep timer for playlists. Its “Play sounds outside the app” setting controls how long a Scene sound continues after a meditation or Sleep Story ends; that is different from a playlist timer.
- Spotify: Spotify says video podcast visuals play only while the app is on screen; when you navigate away or lock the device, only audio plays. Spotify also says Canvas visuals do not continue in the background and can be disabled in settings. These statements concern the behaviors described in Spotify’s support guidance, not every app or Spotify surface.
If you need a specific app’s audio to stop at a precise time, use that app’s own timer when available and verify the behavior once before relying on it overnight.

A video showing a black image can still be playing as video; it is not necessarily a device setting that turns off the display. If your goal is simply to hear ambient sound, use an audio feature or audio source where possible. If you need the TV itself dark, use a documented TV screen-off feature such as Roku TV’s. If you are on a phone, locking the screen is a separate behavior governed by the app, account eligibility, and device settings.
