To play local Indian music videos from several folders in a YouTube Live broadcast, install OBS Studio and VLC with matching system architectures, add the videos to an OBS VLC Video source playlist, then connect OBS to your YouTube event with its stream key. Add the files you want explicitly—OBS’s documentation does not promise automatic discovery of every file inside multiple folders—and confirm you have the streaming rights for each video and its music.

Before you set up the playlist

  • Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS; match their architectures. For example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources guide explains the source requirements.
  • Keep the video files accessible at their current locations. If you move or rename them after adding them, check the playlist and update any broken file paths.
  • Confirm your YouTube channel can go live before scheduling around the stream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.

Add videos from multiple folders to OBS

  1. Open OBS and select the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. If the option is missing, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Open the source properties and add the video files you want to play to its playlist. You can select files from different folders; add the desired files explicitly rather than expecting OBS to scan folders recursively.
  4. Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback after the final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize order instead of following the list. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default.
  5. Fit the source to the scene canvas, then preview the scene. Listen to the audio in OBS’s mixer and let more than one file play so you can catch missing files, unsupported media, or audio-track problems before broadcasting.

The VLC Video source is designed to play a playlist of local media files. It is not a way to import a playlist of videos hosted on YouTube; that is a different workflow. OBS notes that VLC uses its own libraries for extended media support, so support can differ from the formats listed for the standard Media Source.

Connect OBS to your YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, create a live event or open the event you plan to use. Find its stream key and server URL in the encoder or stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating a stream and connecting an encoder.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if the service is available, then follow the connection flow; otherwise select the option to use a stream key and enter the server URL and key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  3. Open Settings > Output and check the streaming encoder settings. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Select resolution and bitrate that your internet upload can sustain, using YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance rather than guessing.
  4. For secure ingestion, use RTMPS where available. Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Studio for the incoming picture, audio, and stream-health messages before relying on the public broadcast.

Test with movement and audio representative of the actual playlist. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages during the event; a clean OBS preview alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Clear music-video rights before going live

A file being on your computer does not mean you have permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have necessary rights for live content, including relevant music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A warning may appear and a placeholder may replace the stream; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Before streaming, verify that your permissions cover each relevant component: the sound recording, musical composition, music video, territories, live transmission, and any archive or replay. A successful test or lack of an immediate match is not proof that the broadcast is cleared.

Troubleshoot common problems

Problem Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing from Sources VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
A playlist item does not play The file path changed, the file is unavailable, or its media support is a problem. Check that the file still exists at the listed location, re-add it if needed, and test that item in OBS before going live.
Video appears but audio is missing The file’s audio track or source/mixer routing may not be working as expected. Preview the item in OBS and watch the mixer while it plays; test other playlist items rather than assuming all files have the same audio setup.
Playback ends instead of returning to the start Loop Playlist is disabled. Open VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
YouTube does not receive the stream The event, server URL, or stream key may not match, or the channel may not have live access. Recheck the selected YouTube event and its encoder details in YouTube Studio, then confirm channel eligibility.
YouTube warns, replaces, or stops the broadcast A third-party-content match or rights issue may be affecting the stream. Review YouTube’s notice and permissions for the matched material; if you have a license, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
