You can play classic Nintendo 64 racing games on Switch with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Open the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Classics library app, choose a game, and use its in-app operation guide to check the controls. The dedicated N64-style Switch controller is optional.
What you need to play
- An active paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo requires this tier for the Nintendo 64 collection: Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online.
- Access to the Nintendo 64 classic game library software on your console. Nintendo’s support guide to finding and starting classic game library apps explains how to open it.
- A compatible controller. You do not have to own the dedicated N64-style controller.
How to start a racing game
- Confirm that your Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- From the console’s HOME Menu, open the Nintendo 64 classic game library software. If you do not see it, follow Nintendo’s library-app access instructions.
- Select a game from the titles available in your region. Nintendo’s U.S. catalog lists Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, and Wave Race 64; catalogs may differ by region and can change.
- Open the game’s in-app operation guide to see which buttons perform the N64 actions on your controller. The Switch button mapping may differ from the original N64 layout.
Which N64 racing game should you choose?
| Game | Racing style and modes | Multiplayer notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 64 | Kart racing with items. Its manual describes Grand Prix, VS, Battle, and Time Trials. | Nintendo says the Switch version supports online play for up to four players. Start the game’s online play option and follow its prompts to invite or join friends. |
| F-Zero X | High-speed futuristic vehicle racing; choose it if you want a different feel from karts or watercraft. | The cited Nintendo listing establishes that it is in the N64 collection; the cited material does not specify its Switch online options. |
| Wave Race 64 | Jet-ski racing focused on watercraft handling and course conditions. Its manual documents Championship, Time Trials, and Stunt Mode. | The original manual describes two-player VS. Do not assume that the original modes have separate online implementations on Switch. |
Availability is established by Nintendo’s U.S. N64 collection listing. Mode details come from the Nintendo game-manual library; for Switch-specific controls, use the current in-app operation guide.
Do you need the Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch?
No. The dedicated controller was designed for Nintendo 64 classic software, but it is an optional accessory. Nintendo cautions that its compatibility with other Switch games is not guaranteed. If you want to pair one, use the console’s Controllers menu and choose Change Grip/Order, then press the controller’s Sync button. Menu labels and connection options can vary by console model; Nintendo’s controller and classic-library support guidance provides setup help.
Nintendo’s U.S./Canada FAQ lists the controller at $49.99 USD or $64.99 CAD, plus shipping and tax. Those are region-specific listed prices and may change; check Nintendo’s support information for current availability and details.

Playing Mario Kart 64 online
Nintendo’s 2021 announcement describes Mario Kart 64 online races for up to four players. Choose the game’s online play option and follow the software prompts to invite friends or join a session. That online-player figure applies to Mario Kart 64; it should not be generalized to the other racing titles. See Nintendo’s Expansion Pack launch announcement.
