You can play classic arcade games at home without a full-size cabinet: use a licensed handheld with games built in, buy a modern release of the games you want, or connect arcade-style controls to a computer and supply the games separately. Choose based on the titles you want, their control requirements, and how much setup you’re willing to do—not just the size of a device’s game count.
Choose the setup that fits your games

For any route, check five things: whether the game selection is legitimate and includes the titles you want; whether the controls suit those games; how much setup is required; whether you want portable or TV play; and whether the option depends on an ongoing online service.
Use a licensed handheld for the simplest setup
A handheld with built-in games is the most direct choice if you want to start playing without configuring a computer. Atari’s Gamestation Go product page lists more than 200 built-in games, including PAC-MAN and licensed games from PAC-MAN, Jaleco, and PIKO International. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not an independent assessment of the library.
The same page lists a 7-inch display, a rechargeable battery with a stated 4–5 hours of play time, Wi-Fi, HDMI output, and USB-C ports for external controllers. Its controls include a paddle, trackball, d-pad, bumpers, numeric keypad, and standard gamepad buttons. The mix matters: a paddle or trackball can suit some arcade games better than a standard thumbstick. Check the included titles and the controls for the games you plan to play before buying.

With HDMI output, the handheld can also serve as a TV-connected option. Atari’s product page describes connecting external controllers, so confirm which controllers are supported if you want to play on a larger screen with a different input device.
Buy a modern release when you want a specific series
A licensed collection on a current console or PC avoids sourcing game files and configuring an emulator. One example is Golden Tee Arcade Classics. Atari lists eight games: Golden Tee 3D Golf, Golden Tee 97, Golden Tee 98, Golden Tee 99, Golden Tee 2K, Golden Tee Classic, Shuffleshot, and World Class Bowling. Atari gives July 17, 2025 as the release date.
Input support varies by platform. Atari lists touchscreen controls on Switch, touchpad controls on PlayStation, and trackball or mouse controls on PC. Check the platform’s storefront and the specific edition for current availability and supported inputs; a collection’s name alone does not tell you whether its controls will match your preferred setup.

Pair a computer with arcade-style controls
If you already have a computer and want a familiar joystick layout, you can add an arcade-style controller without buying a cabinet. X-Arcade describes its joystick as usable with a computer and provides configuration information. Its included-games information says the joystick option does not include games; X-Arcade also says it stopped bundling arcade games with its machines on February 20, 2020. Treat the controller and game library as separate parts of the setup, and check compatibility for the exact controller model and operating system.
For a MAME-based setup, the emulator and the game files are separate matters. The MAME project’s version 0.289 FAQ says users need correct ROMs obtained through legal methods. It identifies possible routes such as buying a license from an authorized distributor or vendor, using ROMs released for free non-commercial use, or reading game data from an arcade PCB. Which route applies depends on the specific game and its rights. Having an emulator or a computer does not itself give you permission to use commercial game files, and the FAQ says its discussion of a DMCA exemption does not make unauthorized ROM copying legal.
Also check the license for the emulator software or core you plan to use. Libretro’s licensing documentation explains that licenses vary and that some listed software is non-commercial; using it in commercial activity or a commercial product may require approval from the copyright holder. Do not assume every emulator has the same license terms.

Consider an online catalog only after checking its terms
A connected library may offer a changing selection, but the service and catalog can depend on the device, region, and current subscription terms. Atari’s VCS FAQ says VCS Vault includes 100 Atari 2600 and arcade games and refers to a retro library from Antstream Arcade in the Atari game store. It also says an internet connection is needed for account creation, updates, purchases, and streaming services. That FAQ does not establish Antstream’s current standalone availability, catalog, price, or subscription terms; verify them for your region and device before relying on this route.

Be cautious with preloaded game collections
A large advertised game count is not proof that a collection is authorized. The MAME FAQ advises caution about cabinets sold with ROMs included, since a seller cannot lawfully bundle copyrighted game files without proper licenses. Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ says look-alike retro consoles and HDMI sticks containing unauthorized copies of Nintendo games infringe Nintendo’s rights, and directs users to official Nintendo stores for authentic titles in its ecosystem. That statement addresses Nintendo games; rights, licenses, exceptions, and applicable law can differ by game and jurisdiction.
