FFmpeg will play the videos in the order you list them; the concat demuxer does not sort filenames for you. Put the files in your intended alphabetical order in a concat script, check that they meet FFmpeg’s compatibility requirements, then send FFmpeg’s output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
1. Decide what “alphabetical” means for your filenames
Choose the ordering rule before creating the list. Capitalization, punctuation, accents, and numbers can affect how filenames sort, and the exact result can vary by operating system and sorting tool. For example, decide whether “Episode 2” should come before or after “Episode 10”; a simple character-by-character alphabetical sort may place them differently from a human-style numeric sort.
The concat demuxer follows the order of the entries in its script, so inspect the completed list rather than assuming an automatic sort has produced the sequence you want. The sample below illustrates an order only; substitute your actual paths.
2. Create the ordered concat script

Optionally put
ffconcat version 1.0on the first line. FFmpeg recognizes this identifying line automatically only when it is exactly that text, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark. -
Write each path using concat syntax. Paths containing spaces or special characters need valid quoting or escaping. Check the syntax for your actual paths and platform.

3. Check whether the concat demuxer fits your files
The concat demuxer is suitable when the inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If they do not, joining them this way can fail or produce playback and timestamp problems. FFmpeg also uses file durations to determine timestamps for subsequent files, so inaccurate duration information can create gaps or other artifacts.
- Use the concat demuxer when the files meet the matching-stream, codec, and time-base requirements and you want FFmpeg to read them in the script’s order.
- Use the concat filter when the inputs need to be decoded and re-encoded to a consistent output profile. FFmpeg’s FAQ identifies the filter as the appropriate approach when re-encoding is needed; it requires an appropriate, consistent output encoding setup.
These are different concat approaches: the demuxer reads a sequence of compatible inputs from a text script, while the filter joins decoded inputs and is the better fit when you need to normalize them by re-encoding.

4. Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your FFmpeg encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter both values into the encoder. The Live API describes an RTMPS primary ingestion URL; an encoder may accept the URL and stream name separately or together.

Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Start FFmpeg and check the YouTube preview and stream status. Complete the live-control steps YouTube presents before expecting viewers to see the broadcast.
Use the URL and key displayed in your own Live Control Room rather than copying values from an example or another channel. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; API details on ingestion URLs are in the YouTube Live Streaming API guide.

5. Troubleshoot ordering and playback
- Videos play in an unexpected order: inspect the
filelines; their order, not the filenames themselves, determines playback. Reorder the lines and verify the chosen case and number rules. - FFmpeg rejects the concat inputs or playback breaks at a file boundary: check that inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If they need a consistent profile, use the concat filter with re-encoding.
- There are gaps or timestamp artifacts between videos: check the source files’ duration information; inaccurate durations can affect timestamps for following files.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm that the server URL and stream key match the values currently shown in Live Control Room, and check the YouTube preview and status.
- A path with spaces or punctuation does not work: correct its quoting or escaping for concat syntax and the platform in use.
