You can use a Nintendo 64 emulator such as Project64 to run Banjo-Tooie on a Windows PC, but the emulator and the game file are separate things. Project64 describes itself as a free, open-source N64 and 64DD emulator for Windows; the available information does not establish Banjo-Tooie-specific compatibility, settings, or performance. You must also obtain game data lawfully for your location—Nintendo says downloading or uploading pirated copies of its games is illegal.
What you need to play Banjo-Tooie on a PC
- A Windows PC and a Nintendo 64 emulator. Project64’s project page describes it as a free, open-source emulator for Nintendo 64 and 64DD, currently for Windows: Project64.
- A lawful source of the game data. The emulator is software; it does not include Banjo-Tooie. The original game was released on an N64 Game Pak, as identified by the instruction booklet’s 2000 Nintendo/Rare copyright notice.
- Optionally, a controller. No verified Banjo-Tooie-specific controller setup is established here, so plan to configure and test inputs in the emulator rather than rely on a guaranteed recipe.
Project64’s general description does not confirm that a particular current version runs Banjo-Tooie correctly. No current best emulator version, graphics configuration, or performance result is established, so treat compatibility and settings as something to verify for your own setup rather than a promise.
How to set it up
- Get an emulator from its project source. Visit the Project64 project page and follow its current Windows installation instructions. The page describes the emulator as free and open source.
- Use a lawful game source. Project64 does not supply the game. Nintendo’s US support FAQ says that game files offered through peer-to-peer networks or third-party-hosted download links are unauthorized copies, and states that uploading and downloading pirate copies is illegal. See Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ. That is Nintendo’s stated position; laws and exceptions can vary by jurisdiction. Owning a cartridge does not by itself establish that downloading a ROM is lawful everywhere.
- Open the game through the emulator. Once you have a lawful, compatible game file, use Project64’s current interface to open it. Exact menu labels can change by version; consult the project’s current documentation if the interface differs.
- Configure controls and display incrementally. Map the controls for your keyboard or connected controller, then adjust display options only as needed. There is no verified Banjo-Tooie-specific button map or graphics preset here, so avoid treating any unverified values as recommended settings.
- Check compatibility if it does not run as expected. Confirm that the game file is valid and that your emulator build is current, then consult Project64’s own support or compatibility resources. Do not assume a launch failure proves the game is unsupported, or that a successful launch guarantees stable play.
PC emulation versus an official Xbox option
If you want to avoid N64 emulator setup, Xbox’s official listing offers another route. Its Banjo-Tooie store page lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and names Rare Replay as an option. It says the game is cloud playable with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate; streaming with Game Pass Essential requires purchase. Check the listing for current regional availability, price, and subscription terms.
| Route | What it involves | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC with an N64 emulator | Install an emulator such as Project64 and provide separate game data from a lawful source. | Banjo-Tooie compatibility, performance, controls, and settings are not established by the emulator’s general project description. |
| Xbox or Xbox Cloud Gaming | Use the Xbox listing for Banjo-Tooie, which also names Rare Replay as an option. | Current regional availability, purchase or subscription requirements, and cloud terms on the official listing. |
Can you use a Banjo-Tooie cartridge on your PC?
The original Nintendo 64 release is a physical Game Pak, but a cartridge is not the same as a PC-readable game file. A cartridge owner should not assume that downloading a ROM is lawful in every jurisdiction; Nintendo’s FAQ specifically characterizes third-party-hosted and peer-to-peer Nintendo game downloads as unauthorized copies. If you are looking for the physical original, “Banjo-Tooie Nintendo 64 cartridge” is the relevant product name, though current seller availability, condition, and price are not established here.
