To advance a video one frame at a time in VLC on a desktop, open it, pause playback, then use VLC’s Frame by frame action. Check the assigned shortcut in Preferences → Interface → Hotkeys because a current default key that applies across platforms and versions is not established. To save the displayed image, choose Video → Snapshot.
Advance a video one frame at a time

Open the video in VLC and play or seek to the moment you want to inspect.

Pause playback near that moment.

Open Preferences → Interface → Hotkeys and look for the frame-by-frame action to see its assigned key. You can use the listed shortcut to advance one frame at a time; if you change it, use the key shown in your installed version.

VLC’s developer command interface also documents a command named frame, described as “play frame by frame.” That confirms the action exists, but it does not establish one universal keyboard shortcut for every desktop system or release. VideoLAN’s download page lists VLC 3.0.24 and builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and other systems; the version listing was accessed on October 7, 2026.

Save the frame you are viewing
With the video paused on the image you want, choose Video → Snapshot. VLC saves a still of the displayed video image. The exact destination and related snapshot settings can depend on your VLC configuration.
Can VLC step backward one frame?
Do not assume that VLC can reliably move to the previous frame. In a 2009 VideoLAN developer discussion, the limitation was tied to codec support for backward playback and the input code then under discussion. That is historical context, not confirmation of the behavior of every codec or current VLC build. The documented frame-by-frame workflow is to advance forward.

Why check the shortcut instead of relying on a key found online?
Shortcut mappings can vary with the installed version, platform, or user customization. The official VLC FAQ documents configurable hotkeys, while the reviewed official material does not establish a current default frame-advance key that is universal across desktop platforms. Use the mapping shown in your own Preferences → Interface → Hotkeys settings rather than assuming a key from a guide will match.
What about VLC on a phone or tablet?
The steps above are for VLC’s desktop interface. Current platform material cited here does not establish a consistent frame-by-frame control flow for Android or other mobile builds, so do not assume the desktop hotkey workflow applies on a touch screen.
