How a round of Three Card Poker works
The standard house-banked game has two main wagers: Ante and Play. Pair Plus may be available as a separate side bet. Rules and settlement details can vary, so check the table’s posted rules before betting.
- Place your wagers. Before the deal, put your Ante in the Ante spot. If you want to bet on the strength of your own hand, place a separate Pair Plus wager if the table offers it.
- Receive three cards. You and the dealer each receive three cards. In the common format, the dealer’s cards remain face down while you decide what to do.
- Fold or continue. After looking at your hand, fold and forfeit the Ante, or place a Play wager equal to your Ante. The Play bet keeps you in the contest against the dealer.
- Compare hands and settle. The dealer reveals their cards and must generally have at least queen-high to qualify. What happens next depends on the table’s rules; the common settlement is shown below.

These are examples of house-banked casino rules, not universal terms. California’s Bureau of Gambling Control describes a different controlled-game format in its rules revised January 2013: a player-dealer, rather than the casino, banks the game. That document requires the player-dealer to qualify with at least queen-high and sets out settlement for that regulated format; do not assume those procedures apply at every casino. Three Card Poker hand rankings
From highest to lowest, the standard rankings are:
- Straight flush
- Three of a kind
- Straight
- Flush
- Pair
- High card
A straight ranks above a flush in Three Card Poker, unlike in many familiar poker games. Rivers states that an ace is high except in 3-2-A, which counts as the lowest straight or straight flush. If a table offers a variant, use its printed hand-ranking rules.

When should you fold or make the Play bet?
A commonly cited basic strategy is to make the Play wager with Q-6-4 or better and fold weaker hands. Compare the cards in descending rank: first the highest card with a queen, then the next card with a six, then the last card with a four. For example, Q-7-2 meets the threshold because the second card outranks a six; Q-6-3 does not because the last card is below a four.
This rule addresses the Ante-and-Play decision under the standard game assumptions. It is not a winning system: it cannot predict a particular deal or guarantee profit, and pay-table differences affect the game’s mathematics. Pair Plus and Ante Bonus payouts
Pair Plus is a separate optional wager based only on your three-card hand. In Rivers Casino Des Plaines’ published example, it pays for a pair or better whether or not the dealer qualifies. Its example schedule is:

Rivers’ example Ante Bonus pays 1:1 for a straight, 4:1 for three of a kind, and 5:1 for a straight flush. Bally Bet publishes the same core Pair Plus and Ante Bonus amounts, alongside a Mini Royal schedule. These are venue examples, not a promise that another table uses the same pay table. A high payout for one hand does not, by itself, establish that a side bet is favorable.

Pay schedules change the mathematics. Wizard of Odds lists the following probabilities for standard three-card hands: straight flush 0.002172, three of a kind 0.002353, straight 0.032579, flush 0.049593, pair 0.169412, and all other hands 0.743891. These are hand probabilities reported by that reference, not predictions of an individual session.
For the Pair Plus schedules it compares without a Mini Royal, Wizard of Odds reports house edges ranging from 0.00% to 7.28%. The 0.00% schedule in its table includes a 10% commission on net session wins; its listed 40/30/6/3/1 schedule has a 7.28% house edge. Those figures apply to the specified schedules and assumptions, not to every casino’s game. Bally Bet’s page separately publishes an RTP of 97.99%; treat that as Bally Bet’s stated figure for its offering, not a forecast for your session or a universal Three Card Poker RTP.

How to compare tables before you play
Do not compare games using just one prominent bonus payout. Check the full rules and wager schedule for the exact table or online version:
- Whether the game is house-banked or uses a player-dealer arrangement.
- The Ante Bonus and Pair Plus schedules, including whether a Mini Royal is offered.
- Any additional side bets and their complete payout schedules.
- Dealer qualification, tie settlement, and what happens when you fold.
- The minimum wager and local availability.
Rivers and Bally Bet publish venue-specific rules and payouts, while California’s regulator specifies a controlled player-dealer format. Their differences are a reason to read the rules displayed for the game you are actually playing.

Practice recognizing hands
A standard 52-card deck is enough to practice the rankings at home; no special deck is needed. Deal three cards at a time, identify the hand from highest to lowest, and pay particular attention to the three-card distinctions between a straight, flush, and straight flush.
