To grow a mangrove tree in Minecraft, plant a mangrove propagule on a supported block, then wait or use bone meal to speed it up. Propagules can grow on mud or clay and even underwater. The item passes through four growth stages before becoming a tree.

What you need to grow a mangrove tree

The plantable item is called a mangrove propagule. Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.19 notes describe it as a sapling that grows into a mangrove tree. You can collect a fully grown propagule from a mangrove tree or start a new one by using bone meal on mangrove leaves. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.19 release notes document the planting and growth mechanics.

How to plant and grow a propagule

  1. Get a propagule. Break off a fully grown one from a mangrove tree, or use bone meal on mangrove leaves to start a propagule growing beneath them. The latter behavior is also described in the Java Edition Snapshot 22w11a notes.
  2. Choose a planting block. Place the propagule on a block that supports normal saplings, or plant it on mud or clay. It can also be planted underwater.
  3. Wait for growth or use bone meal. The propagule grows through four stages. Applying bone meal accelerates its growth, but the official notes do not specify a guaranteed number of uses or say that one application always produces a tree.

If your mangrove propagule will not grow

Check which edition and version you are playing before changing the setup. The core planting and growth details above come from Java Edition 1.19 notes. Bedrock Edition 1.19.10 update notes documented fixes for propagules being blocked by leaves and destroyed by flowing water. Those historical fixes do not establish that every obstruction or water setup is harmless in every later version.

If the issue persists, confirm the propagule is planted on a supported block and consult the release notes for your specific edition and version. The official notes cited here do not provide a complete clearance radius or promise a particular tree shape.
