Build flexibility into key parts of your itinerary, check the specific train or flight with its operator before setting out, and use the ticket’s terms and official passenger-rights guidance if service changes. Protests and industrial action can disrupt roads and public transport in France, but their effects depend on the location, date and service; no general forecast can tell you whether a particular journey will run.
What to check before you travel
France travel advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) warns that industrial action can disrupt roads and public transport. Demonstrations may also happen with little warning, particularly in cities. The FCDO advises: “If you’re due to travel to or within France, monitor the media, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of the authorities.” Read the FCDO’s France safety and security advice.

- Check official travel advice and local notices. If demonstrations are announced or underway, check current information from relevant authorities and follow police and local-authority directions. Demonstrations are not all dangerous and do not necessarily stop all transport; disruption is specific to the event and area.
- Check each operator’s live service information. For French trains covered by SNCF Connect, its website and app show route and train information, including disruptions, works, delays and stops not served. Search by train or route and date, and check close to departure and again before leaving for the station. SNCF Connect recommends checking the train’s status and departure time before going to the station. See SNCF Connect traffic information.
- Use the operating company’s information for international journeys. A French service page may not cover every operator on a cross-border itinerary. Check the relevant railway or airline’s own notices as well as the seller’s messages.
- Check access to the place you need to reach. If a demonstration is near a planned station, airport or route, verify access and service status with the operator or authorities. There is no universal alternate route that applies to every disruption.
Save booking references, operator contact details and relevant apps somewhere accessible. Keep your phone charged so you can receive messages and check live updates; a portable power bank is an optional convenience, not a substitute for confirming service.
How to make the itinerary more resilient
Leave practical flexibility around important connections, the first night and time-sensitive events where you can. A buffer can reduce the chance that one delay derails the rest of a plan, but it cannot guarantee that you will make a connection or avoid extra costs.
#1 Best Overall
- Know whether onward legs are on one through-ticket or on separate bookings, and check the terms that apply if the first leg is delayed.
- Before choosing a replacement train, flight or coach, check whether it is operating, how much usable time remains before a fixed commitment, and what the change terms are for the exact ticket.
- Consider possible contingency costs, such as a replacement ticket, extra accommodation, local transfers and meals. Do not assume these will be reimbursed.
- FCDO guidance recommends insurance appropriate to your itinerary, planned activities and emergency expenses. Read your policy or ask the insurer specifically about strikes, missed connections, alternative transport, accommodation and exclusions; general advice to buy insurance does not establish that a particular claim is covered. See the FCDO France travel advice.
If a train is delayed or canceled
- Verify the exact service. Check the train number, route and date on the operator’s current service page. Check every connection separately, including whether a stop is not being served. SNCF Connect’s information covers incidents, works, delays and stops not served; its disruption guidance also tells travelers to check current status and connections. Read SNCF Connect’s disruption guidance.
- Read the notice and ticket conditions. If the train is canceled, exchange or cancellation measures may be available for a limited period, and the rules vary by service. SNCF Connect says a canceled ticket may need to be canceled through the channel used to buy it. Follow the specific operator notice and ticket terms rather than assuming one rule applies to every French train.
- Contact the seller or railway. Use the channel identified on your ticket or in the operator’s notice. Keep the cancellation or delay notice, booking details and receipts for expenses while you seek an exchange, refund or other remedy.
- Check EU rail rights if the disruption meets the threshold. Under the EU framework, a cancellation or an expected delay of at least 60 minutes at your final destination can generally give you a choice between reimbursement and rerouting options. The journey contract and circumstances affect how the rules apply. Rail-company staff strikes are not treated as extraordinary circumstances for compensation, but that does not mean every strike automatically results in a cash payment. Check the official guidance for the options and conditions that apply to your journey. Read the EU rail passenger-rights guidance.
If a flight is affected
Contact the airline operating the flight, including when you booked through another airline or a travel agent. EU guidance places responsibility for handling a flight problem on the operating carrier in a codeshare. Ask the carrier about care, rerouting, refund and complaint channels, and keep receipts and written notices.
For compensation, the type of strike matters. EU guidance says an airline’s own staff strike is not an extraordinary circumstance that exempts the airline from compensation obligations. An external strike, such as action by air-traffic-control or airport staff, may qualify as extraordinary, but the airline must establish the required causal connection and that reasonable measures could not have avoided the disruption. Whether compensation is due depends on the individual case; do not assume that every strike means either compensation or no compensation. Read the EU air passenger-rights guidance.
