The right route depends on your origin, destination, direction, and departure time; there is no dependable alternate route for every trip.
1. Set your trip details
Write down your starting point, destination, direction of travel, and approximate departure window. Those details determine which closures matter: a lane restriction may affect one direction or time period but not another. Without them, a route comparison cannot establish which option is best for your trip.
2. Check scheduled construction closures
Open the Houston TranStar Road Construction schedule. Choose the relevant time span—such as the next 24 hours, next 72 hours, weekend, or custom dates—and look for closures along your corridor.
Read the actual closure details rather than relying on a project headline. Note the location, affected lanes, hours, duration, and any detour instructions. A full closure or ramp restriction can make a route unusable; a lane closure may leave it open but affect travel. Compare the closure window with your planned departure.

Houston TranStar warns: “All closures are subject to change due to weather, emergency work, or other events.” A scheduled listing is useful for planning, but it is not a guarantee that conditions will remain unchanged.
3. Compare routes on the traffic map
Use the Houston TranStar traffic map to examine your main corridor and plausible alternatives. Turn on the construction lane-closure and road-closure layers, then use route builder and speeds/travel times to compare options. Consider:

- Whether a full closure or ramp closure blocks a route.
- Which lanes are affected and where the restriction begins.
- Whether the closure overlaps your departure window.
- How the official detour uses frontage roads, exits, or ramps.
- Current speeds and travel times, along with other disruptions.
The map also provides incidents, cameras, message signs, weather radar, and roadway flooding risk. Check those layers when a slowdown may involve more than construction. The available map information does not establish that every closure will appear or that an alternate route will always be faster.
4. Follow the official detour for a full closure
If the schedule gives a specific detour, use it as your reference instead of assuming a navigation app accounts for every local ramp restriction or turn. Instructions may direct drivers to a particular exit, along a frontage road, or to an alternate on-ramp. Check that the sequence fits your direction of travel and destination, and follow posted signs and traffic control on the road.

5. Recheck before leaving
Refresh the schedule and map close to departure because closure plans can change. Houston TranStar’s mobile traffic page lists regional maps and tools including route builder, travel times, cameras, incidents, road closures, construction closures, and message signs.
If conditions change while you are driving, prioritize roadway signs and traffic control. Do not handle a phone while driving; if an update is needed, have a passenger check it or pull over safely first.

Example: a dated SH-249 detour
On October 4, 2026, Houston TranStar’s schedule listed a southbound SH-249 closure at Louetta through 5:00 a.m. Monday, October 5 (Central Time). The posted detour directed traffic to exit at Chasewood Park Drive/Cypresswood Drive, follow the frontage road, and return to the main lanes at the next available on-ramp. The schedule said the design was intended to keep traffic out of signalized intersections and maintain simple freeway access. This was a short-term listing checked on that date, not continuing route advice; verify the schedule before relying on it.
