Plan a New Zealand hike around five things: the group’s ability, route length and grade, season and conditions, bookings, and transport. Then pack for that specific trip and leave someone a clear itinerary. New Zealanders often call hiking tramping; the Department of Conservation (DOC) uses both terms.
Choose a trail that fits your group and the season
Start by comparing route duration and distance, track grade and terrain, seasonal hazards, overnight facilities, and how you will reach both the start and finish. A route that looks manageable on a map may require more time, skills, or transport planning than expected. Check the current DOC page for the exact walk: routes, conditions, seasonal dates, and facility rules differ.
Great Walks and other options
DOC identifies the Great Walks as premier tracks. Its list includes Abel Tasman Coast, Heaphy, Hump Ridge, Kepler, Lake Waikaremoana, Milford, Paparoa, Rakiura, Routeburn, and Tongariro Northern Circuit, as well as the Whanganui Journey. Compare each option against your group’s experience and the trip logistics rather than choosing by reputation alone. DOC notes that guided trips can provide more comfort and that local operators serve major towns near Great Walks.

Route example: Routeburn Track
The Routeburn is 33 km one way and generally takes two to four days. DOC describes its sections as intermediate and advanced tramping track. From May through October, conditions can be challenging; DOC says attempting the track then requires the relevant skills. For the 2026/27 Great Walk season, running 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 on the DOC page reviewed, hut and campsite bookings are required. Confirm dates and requirements on the live track page before planning around them.

Book overnight stays and plan transport early
Some huts, campsites, and lodges require bookings; some facilities cannot be booked. Rules depend on the route and season, so verify the specific track’s current instructions and live availability. At the time DOC’s booking portal was reviewed, Great Walk, hut, campsite, and lodge bookings were open for stays through 30 June 2027. DOC says bookings are first come, first served and there are no waiting lists for booked-out future facilities.

Demand can be high, but past occupancy is not a forecast of current availability. In a release dated 26 March 2026, DOC said four of the 11 Great Walks recorded more bookings than the previous year. For the season discussed in that release, Milford and Abel Tasman huts were around 95% occupied and Kepler huts were 91% occupied. Treat these as dated context, not a guide to whether a bed is available now.
DOC said 2026/27 bookings opened on staggered dates beginning 12 May 2026 and advised visitors to prepare their booking account and have alternate plans. Check the portal for present availability and the route page for its specific rules.

Include both trailheads in your transport plan
For a point-to-point walk, work out how you will get to the start and leave from the finish before booking accommodation or committing to dates. Check current transport options, timing, and any relevant operator arrangements with the route information and local providers. Do not assume a return to the starting point is built into the hike.

Pack for the trip, not a generic checklist
DOC organizes gear guidance by activity and duration: Great Walks, short walks under three hours, day hikes under eight hours, overnight and multi-day tramps, alpine trips, and other activities. Use the list closest to your trip, then adjust for forecast, terrain, season, time out, and the group’s experience. A short-walk list is not a substitute for an overnight or alpine checklist.
For a detailed route plan, DOC recommends maps and navigation tools that you know how to use. Download maps for offline access before entering areas without phone or internet reception. If you navigate with a phone, take a paper backup and ensure the battery will last. A paper map is useful only if you can read it and use it to navigate.

DOC’s emergency recommendations include warm and waterproof clothing, emergency shelter, survival and first-aid supplies, navigation tools, a torch and spare batteries, spare food, and a distress beacon. Select equipment for the actual trip; carrying gear does not replace the skills to use it.

Leave a trip intention and prepare for an emergency
Before setting out, give a trusted person your route and intended return time, and agree that they will call 111 if you fail to return as planned. DOC recommends thorough route planning and taking appropriate emergency supplies, including a distress beacon. Make sure the group knows the plan and knows how to use its navigation and safety equipment.

- Confirm the route, expected duration, current conditions, and any seasonal or booking requirements.
- Plan access to the trailhead and departure from the finish.
- Download maps for offline use, carry a paper navigation backup, and check batteries.
- Pack suitable clothing, food, first aid, shelter, lighting, and other emergency gear for the route.
- Share the itinerary and return time with a trusted contact.
