You can’t use ordinary ping to test a specific port: ping sends ICMP echo requests, while a port test checks a TCP or UDP service. For a quick TCP check, try nc -vz -w 3 host.example 443. For UDP, use a UDP-aware probe such as Nmap, keeping in mind that no response does not prove the port is closed.
What “ping a port” means
“Ping a port” is common shorthand for checking whether a service on a particular machine and port can be reached. It is not what the ping command does: ping tests ICMP reachability and has no TCP or UDP port selection. Nmap documents ICMP host discovery separately from TCP and UDP probes in its host discovery documentation.
Specify the transport protocol as well as the port. TCP 443 and UDP 443 are distinct checks; a result for one does not establish anything about the other. The commands below test a remote host from the machine where you run them. Test only systems you own or are authorized to assess.
Test a TCP port with netcat
For a quick TCP connection attempt, run:
nc -vz -w 3 host.example 443
-zasks netcat to check without sending application data.-vrequests verbose output.-w 3sets a short timeout in implementations that support the option.
Netcat versions differ across Linux distributions and Unix systems, so switches and output are not universal. Check nc -h or the local nc manual if an option is rejected. The nc(1) manual describes TCP and UDP connections, zero-I/O scan mode, and timeout behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Interpret the result cautiously
- Connection succeeds: A TCP handshake completed from this machine at that time. It does not verify that the application is healthy, that TLS is configured correctly, or that authentication and other application functions work.
- Connection refused: The destination actively rejected the attempt. This often happens when no service accepts connections on that address and port, but the message alone does not establish the complete cause.
- Timeout or silence: Filtering, packet loss, routing trouble, or an unresponsive host can all produce this result. It is not enough to label the port closed.
- Routing or name-resolution error: Check the hostname, destination address, and route; this is not the same as evidence that a service port is closed.
Use Nmap for a TCP port state
When you want Nmap’s port-state classification, check one TCP port with:
nmap -p 443 host.example
TCP is the default scan protocol for this command. Nmap distinguishes states such as open, closed, and filtered; “filtered” means filtering prevented a decisive determination about whether the port is open. Results depend on scan conditions and network policy. See the Nmap manual for port states and probe behavior.

Test a UDP port with Nmap
UDP has no connection handshake like TCP. To probe a selected UDP port, run:
nmap -sU -p 53 host.example
A closed UDP port may respond with an ICMP port-unreachable message. An open service may ignore an empty probe, so silence is inconclusive; a result such as open|filtered reflects that Nmap cannot distinguish an open, silent service from filtering based on the response it received. For services such as DNS, a protocol-aware query is more informative than treating an empty probe as definitive. Nmap explains these limitations in its host discovery documentation and manual.

Choose the right command
| Method | Protocol | Useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
ping host |
ICMP | Basic host or path reachability when ICMP is allowed | Does not test a TCP or UDP service port |
nc -vz -w 3 host port |
TCP | A quick single-port connection attempt | Options and output vary; a failure may have several causes |
nmap -p port host |
TCP by default | A port-state classification | Requires Nmap; filtering and scan conditions affect results |
nmap -sU -p port host |
UDP | A UDP port probe | Silence can remain open-or-filtered |
/dev/tcp/host/port in Bash |
TCP | A lightweight check in a Bash script | Bash-specific, not a portable POSIX shell feature |
Use Bash for a simple scripted TCP check
Bash supports a /dev/tcp/host/port redirection that attempts a TCP connection. With timeout installed, this example limits the wait and deliberately reports only a broad failure category:
if timeout 3 bash -c '</dev/tcp/host.example/443' 2>/dev/null; then
echo open
else
echo closed-or-unreachable
fi
The redirection is a Bash feature, not a portable POSIX shell command. A failure can mean more than a closed port, which is why the example says “closed-or-unreachable.” See the Linuxize guide to checking open ports.

Check whether a port is listening on your own machine
If the question is whether a process is listening locally, a socket-listing tool is a better starting point than connecting back to the machine. Where available, run:
ss -lntup
This lists listening TCP and UDP sockets. A local listener does not by itself prove remote reachability: its address binding, routing, and firewall policy can affect whether another machine can connect.
