For a detailed Moon photo, use the longest compatible telephoto lens you have, expose for the bright lunar surface—not the dark sky—and inspect a magnified test frame for focus and clipped highlights. A useful full-Moon starting point is f/11, ISO 100, and 1/100 second, but the right exposure changes with lunar phase, lens, and conditions.

Choose the kind of Moon photo you want

A close-up prioritizes lunar surface detail. A Moon-in-the-landscape image prioritizes the setting, scale, and timing; the Moon may appear small and lack visible surface detail. Decide which result you want before choosing a lens and exposure.

For a close-up

Use a telephoto lens to make the Moon larger in the frame. A 70–300mm lens is one practical example, not a minimum requirement or a guarantee that the Moon will fill the frame. Longer focal lengths also narrow the field of view and make framing movement more noticeable.

For a landscape

Scout the foreground and the Moon’s position ahead of time. NASA senior photographer Bill Ingalls recommends including a land-based object, such as a local landmark, to give the image a sense of place. NASA’s Moon-photography guide also explains why planning the timing and composition matters.

Choose a compatible lens and focal length

Use the longest focal length that suits your composition and that your DSLR can support. Sensor crop factor affects how much of the scene fits in the frame, so framing varies between camera bodies even when the lens focal length is the same. Check that any lens fits your camera’s mount before using or buying it.

A teleconverter can add reach, but it reduces the light reaching the sensor and has compatibility limits. Verify that your exact camera body and lens support it, including any autofocus or stabilization features you expect to use. Longer lenses can also be heavier and harder to keep steady.

Set exposure for the Moon, not the night sky

The Moon is bright because it reflects sunlight. If the camera meters the surrounding dark sky as though the whole scene were dim, it may overexpose the lunar surface and erase crater detail. NASA puts it simply: “moonlight is just reflected sunlight.”

Start with a full-Moon baseline

Canon’s Looney f/11 rule gives this starting exposure for a full Moon: f/11, ISO 100, and 1/100 second. It is a baseline, not a universal setting or a guarantee of a sharp image. A half Moon or crescent needs a different exposure because the illuminated portion and its appearance change.

Adjust while protecting surface detail

Try manual exposure or spot metering, then inspect the image’s histogram or highlight warnings. If the Moon’s bright areas are clipped, reduce exposure; Nikon’s Moon-photography guidance recommends underexposing as needed to preserve crater detail and bracketing exposures. Bracketing means taking a sequence of frames at different exposures so you can compare them.

Keep the shutter speed fast enough to limit blur from the Moon’s motion. Nikon advises 1/15 second or faster, while Canon says it generally uses at least 1/125 second with a telephoto lens. These are different guidance baselines, not a single threshold that suits every setup. With a long focal length, favor faster shutter speeds if test frames show motion blur. Adjust aperture and ISO as needed to reach a suitable exposure while preserving highlights and using an aperture at which your lens performs well.

Focus, take a test frame, and check it closely

  1. Focus on the Moon. Nikon lists infinity as a starting point. Canon suggests autofocus on the Moon or manual focus using magnified Live View. The infinity mark may not be exact for your lens, so confirm focus rather than relying on the marking alone.
  2. Take a test frame. Magnify the image on the camera’s LCD and check whether lunar surface detail looks sharp. Also check for clipped highlights and motion blur.
  3. Correct the problem you see. Refocus if the detail is soft, use a faster shutter speed if motion is blurred, or reduce exposure if highlights are clipped. Make another test frame after changing settings.

Reduce camera shake and make framing easier

A sturdy tripod can help with steady framing, especially at long focal lengths. Use the camera’s self-timer or a remote shutter release to avoid shake from pressing the shutter button. A tripod is helpful but not essential for a Moon-only photo when the shutter speed is fast enough. If using image stabilization on a tripod, check your camera and lens manuals for the recommended setting.

Expose the Moon and foreground as separate challenges

A landscape foreground can be much darker than the Moon. Exposing for the foreground may clip the lunar surface; exposing to preserve the Moon may leave the land dark. Twilight can help bring their brightness closer together, so consider planning the shot before the sky is fully dark.

If one exposure cannot retain useful detail in both, take separate exposures and combine them only if that matches your intended image. Disclose compositing where it is relevant to how the image will be presented.

Quick checklist before you shoot

  • Choose a close-up or landscape composition and plan the Moon’s position.
  • Use a compatible telephoto lens if you want the Moon larger in the frame.
  • For a full Moon, try f/11, ISO 100, and 1/100 second as a starting point, then adapt the exposure.
  • Focus on the Moon and verify sharpness in a magnified test frame.
  • Check highlights and use a fast enough shutter speed to avoid motion blur.
  • Use a tripod and hands-free shutter release when they help with stability or framing.
  • For a Moon-and-landscape image, consider twilight or separate exposures.
