You can photograph the Moon with a phone and capture bright planets such as Jupiter or Saturn as points of light. For lunar craters or recognizable planetary disks, put the phone camera over a telescope eyepiece. The key difference is scale: phone-only shots work best with careful exposure and a thoughtful composition, while a telescope supplies the magnification needed for close-ups.
Choose the right approach for your target
| Approach | What it can do | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Phone only | Capture the Moon with visible shading and include bright planets as points of light. | Quick shots, wide compositions and landscapes. |
| Phone camera through a telescope eyepiece | Magnify the view enough to show more lunar detail and make planets appear larger. | Close-ups, provided the phone is aligned and the telescope is focused. |
NASA’s smartphone astrophotography article, last updated in October 2024, calls the Moon a good beginner target because it is large and bright. Brightness is also a challenge: automatic exposure can turn the lunar surface into a featureless white disk. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide and its Lunar Photography Guide explain the basic methods.
Photograph the Moon with a phone alone
- Choose a safe, steady location. Find an unobstructed view and plan your framing before you start. Twilight or dawn can make the contrast between the Moon and sky less extreme. A building, tree or recognizable landscape can give the image context.
- Turn off flash and focus on the Moon. Tap the lunar disk on screen to set focus. If your camera app offers manual controls, try a lower ISO; control names and available settings vary by phone.
- Lower the exposure. Reduce the on-screen exposure or brightness until the Moon looks gray rather than like a blown-out white patch. Look for shading and visible surface features, not a bright white disk.
- Stabilize the phone. Rest it on a steady surface or use a tripod or phone mount. Use the timer or a remote shutter if available, so pressing the screen does not shake the camera.
- Take several frames and check them. Review focus and exposure, then adjust and try again. If your phone has a genuine telephoto lens, compare its optical zoom with the standard lens. Digital zoom enlarges a crop rather than adding optical detail, so compare the result with a crop made after taking the photo.
NASA photographer Bill Ingalls recommends making a Moon image distinctive by including something on the ground, such as a local landmark. That approach is especially useful when the Moon itself looks small in a phone’s frame. Read NASA’s guide to photographing the Moon for further composition advice.

With a phone on its own, treat bright planets such as Jupiter and Saturn as points of light, not as close-up subjects. Frame one with a foreground object, or include the Moon when it is nearby in the sky. Digital zoom will not reveal Saturn’s rings or surface detail; a tighter crop only enlarges the available image. NASA’s article about the Saturn–Jupiter conjunction includes general framing advice, though its event-specific dates concern the 2020 conjunction: NASA’s planet-photography guidance.

- Ultra-HD Optical Technology: MIAO LAB 10X telephoto & 200mm macro Lens kit use the 9-element, 12-glass design with Nitto A-grade imported optics. Both lenses feature double-sided AR+AF multi-layer coatings (FMC) to reduce reflection and enhance clarity. After precise color correction, they deliver light transmittance ≥ 99.5%, distortion ≤ 0.5%, and reflectivity ≤ 0.3%. Enjoy crystal-clear images with accurate colors
- 2-in-1 Lens Kit(Telephoto & Macro): Our phone lens attachment combines 10X telephoto lens and 200mm macro lens. Not only can it capture sharp and clear distant shots, but it also allows for detailed close-up photography when the macro lens is attached. Break free from single-purpose lenses—enjoy the power of two in one. (Optimal shooting range: Telephoto 1000mm–∞ / Macro 200–240mm)
- Seamless 2-in-1 Design: Functioning as both a telephoto and macro lens, this accessory offers dual modes for your iPhone. Use it with the universal clip for powerful smartphone photography, or attach the eyecup to convert it into a portable mini monocular for direct viewing
- Aluminum Body, Refined & Elegant: Our smartphone camera kit is crafted from aerospace-grade aluminum with a sleek, matte-black anodized finish for a premium feel. The thoughtful design includes a focus ring and a 30mm to 37mm expansion interface. Its seamless unibody construction has no protruding parts, resulting in an elegant form that weighs just 145 grams
- Perfect Gift for Photography Lovers: The TM10 TeleMacro Lens features a large 37mm eyepiece and an optimized eye relief design that helps minimize vignetting on your phone, delivering a wider, clearer field of view. When paired with your phone's native zoom, it elevates the visual performance to the next level, making it an excellent gift for any mobile photography enthusiast.
Get close-ups through a telescope eyepiece
- Aim and focus the telescope first. Center the Moon or planet and bring it into focus using the telescope’s controls.
- Align the phone camera with the eyepiece. Position the phone’s camera lens over the eyepiece. Handholding can work, but keeping the lens centered takes practice. A smartphone eyepiece adapter can hold the phone in a more consistent position.
- Refocus through the telescope. Use the telescope’s focusing controls rather than relying on the phone autofocus to focus through the eyepiece.
- Keep the view centered and capture steadily. Start with a less-magnified eyepiece if the target is hard to keep in frame. Use a short timer or video if your phone supports it, and re-center as needed.
On a telescope without tracking, the sky’s motion can carry a high-power view out of frame quickly. NASA gives an example of the Moon moving out of view in as little as 30 seconds; that is not a universal timing guarantee. Results also depend on the telescope, eyepiece, phone camera, atmospheric steadiness and alignment. NASA’s smartphone guide illustrates lunar craters photographed through a Celestron C8 eyepiece with a hand-held iPhone 6s; that example is not a recommendation or a guarantee for other equipment.

- For a basic Moon photo: Start with your phone and a steady surface. A telescope is not required.
- For steadier phone-only shots: A tripod or stable phone mount can reduce shake, but setting the phone on a solid surface may be enough.
- For phone-through-telescope shots: An eyepiece adapter can make alignment more repeatable. Fit depends on the phone, its case, the adapter and the eyepiece.
- For close-up detail: A telescope provides the magnification that a phone’s digital zoom cannot. Practice with equipment you already have before deciding whether to upgrade.
