To compare iPhone finishes in photos, shoot each phone under the same stable light, from the same angle and distance, with the same framing and exposure. Use the camera’s Standard look where available, and view the photos with True Tone and Night Shift off and brightness held steady. For more repeatable comparisons, include an optional neutral gray card beside each phone under the same light. Photos can help you compare finishes, but they cannot guarantee how a color will look in person or on another screen.
Set up a fair comparison
Changing light, camera processing and display settings can all affect perceived color. The goal is not to make a photo certify a finish’s official color; it is to keep conditions consistent so differences between candidate phones are easier to judge.
- Choose one stable light source. Photograph every candidate under the same lighting setup. Avoid changing or mixing light between shots; a neutral reference is most useful when it is illuminated by the same light as the subject. Capture One’s guidance likewise places the reference card or chart under the subject’s lighting.
- Keep the camera position consistent. Use the same distance, angle and framing for each phone. Keep exposure similar as well, so one image is not made brighter or darker in a way that changes the comparison.
- Use the Standard camera look where available. On supported iPhones, Photographic Styles can adjust colors in parts of photos and apply automatically. Select Standard for a plain starting point, or note the active style so you do not mistake its rendering for a finish difference. Model availability and controls vary. See Apple’s Photographic Styles guidance.
- Optionally include a neutral gray card. Place a photography gray card next to the phone and light it evenly with the same light. Kodak describes its 18% neutral gray card as a reference for color and exposure; Capture One explains using a gray card or chart to establish a neutral white balance. It is a consistency aid, not a measurement of the phone finish’s official color value or a guarantee of a perfect match.
The gray-card method is general photography guidance. Do not assume the built-in iPhone Camera app can use a card to calibrate white balance; manual white-balance controls depend on the camera app or editing workflow.
Make the viewing screen consistent
On the iPhone or other display you use to inspect the photos, remove color-changing variables before comparing them.

- Turn off True Tone: Apple says it adapts display color and intensity to ambient light. Turning it off keeps those settings constant as ambient light changes. Apple’s display guidance explains the feature.
- Turn off Night Shift: It shifts display colors toward warmer tones, so disable it for a color comparison. See Apple’s Night Shift instructions.
- Hold brightness steady: Automatic brightness responds to ambient lighting. Use a consistent brightness while comparing; Apple documents brightness controls in its iPhone display guide.
- Check accessibility display changes: Color Filters and related display modifications can change the appearance of images and videos. Make sure color filters, Invert Colors and similar settings are not active. See Apple’s display color settings guide.
Compare, then confirm in person if possible
View the candidate photos side by side under the same screen conditions. Treat the result as a relative comparison rather than a promise of exact appearance: a photograph records one lighting and camera-processing situation, and its display can render the image differently. If the exact finish matters to your purchase, inspect the actual device in person when possible.
Apple reported an 87% reduction in variance of surface colors due to ambient light for its Constant Color API on the iPhone 15 family in a 2024 developer presentation. That scoped API result is not a claim about ordinary Camera app photos and does not guarantee exact color fidelity. Apple’s WWDC24 Constant Color session describes the result.
