Windows Terminal on Windows 11 can be tailored to make command-line work easier to read and navigate. Start with Settings for profile fonts, colors, backgrounds, the application theme, and keyboard shortcuts; use settings.json for options that the interface does not expose.

Terminal hosts shells such as Command Prompt, PowerShell, and bash through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Many appearance choices belong to an individual profile, while profile defaults can apply settings across profiles. Microsoft’s Windows Terminal overview describes the app and its customization features.

1. Set a readable font and profile defaults

Font settings are part of a profile’s appearance. To change one profile, open Windows Terminal, select the down-arrow beside the tab bar, choose Settings, then select the profile in the sidebar and open Appearance. Choose a font available on your PC and save the change. The profile selector is useful when you want, for example, PowerShell to look different from a WSL profile.

To apply a setting across profiles that do not specify their own value, set it in profiles.defaults in settings.json. Microsoft documents Cascadia Code as an example font value, not a required or exclusive choice:

Open Settings, choose Open JSON file, and edit the file if you need to use this method. Keep the JSON syntax valid, including commas between properties. A profile-specific value can override the default. Microsoft’s profile appearance guide covers profile-level appearance options, and its tips and tricks page shows the default-font example. Newly installed WSL distributions can appear as profiles the next time Terminal launches.

2. Pick a color scheme that keeps text legible

A color scheme sets the terminal’s foreground, background, cursor, selection, and ANSI colors. In Settings, select a profile, open Appearance, and choose a scheme from the available list. Compare how the colors look with your usual commands and output; a palette that is attractive but makes text or selections hard to distinguish is a poor fit.

To define a scheme, use Open JSON file and add a named entry in the schemes array, using hex color strings for its values. Then assign its name to a profile with colorScheme. For example, the profile property takes this form:

"colorScheme": "Campbell"

Microsoft lists built-in schemes including Campbell, One Half Dark, One Half Light, Tango Dark, and Tango Light. Saving the file updates open Terminal windows. The color schemes documentation provides the scheme structure and examples. For additional visibility, the profile appearance settings also document adjustIndistinguishableColors, which can adjust foreground colors based on the background.

3. Add a profile background image and tune transparency

Background images are profile-specific, so you can use an image in one shell and keep another profile plain. In Settings, choose the profile, open Appearance, and set its background image. Adjust the image opacity and stretch behavior there as well; a restrained image and clear text contrast are practical choices when output needs to remain readable.

The profile opacity setting accepts an integer from 0 to 100, with 100 fully opaque. Acrylic adds a blurred background effect. Microsoft notes that unblurred opacity—using useAcrylic: false—works only on Windows 11. These are profile appearance controls, not the same setting as the overall application theme. See Microsoft’s profile appearance reference for the available image, opacity, and acrylic properties.

4. Choose the application theme and make tabs easier to use

The application theme affects the Terminal interface as a whole; profile appearance controls the shell’s text and background. Open Settings and go to Appearance to choose a system-following, light, or dark theme. Following the system keeps Terminal aligned with Windows, while a fixed light or dark choice keeps it consistent regardless of the Windows setting.

Tab controls let you balance profile identification against space for open tabs. Depending on the available options in your version, choose whether tabs remain visible, whether their widths follow titles or stay compact, whether titles are shown, and whether animations are used. Title-length tabs can make profiles easier to identify; compact tabs reserve more room for additional tabs. Microsoft documents these options in its appearance settings guide.

Custom theme definitions can change the window, tab row, and tab visuals, but Microsoft labels these theme settings as preview and says they are edited directly in settings.json, rather than in the Settings interface. Availability can vary by installed release. Window border colors are available only on Windows 11. Check Microsoft’s theme documentation against your version before relying on preview settings.

5. Change keyboard shortcuts to fit your workflow

Terminal actions can have custom keyboard bindings. Open Settings and select Actions to review and edit available bindings. If the action or binding you want is not exposed there, edit the actions configuration in settings.json. Microsoft’s overview gives Ctrl+Shift+C as the default copy shortcut and notes that users can change shortcuts they dislike. Consult the actions reference for configuration details instead of assuming every version has the same list.

When assigning a new combination, check that it does not conflict with a shortcut you rely on elsewhere in Terminal or Windows. Test the binding in the profile and context where you intend to use it.
