Use Selenium WebDriver to repeat the same important browser workflows under each language and regional locale your product supports, then check the results with visual inspection and target-language review. Selenium can verify browser-visible behavior; it cannot determine whether a translation is accurate or culturally appropriate.

What localization testing covers

Localization testing checks whether a product works and presents itself correctly for a target market—not just whether the browser displays another language. Microsoft Learn describes it as checking translation quality and confirming that visual or functional issues are absent: How to perform localization testing.

Effective localization testing follows internationalization (i18n) work: the product first needs an architecture that can support different languages, scripts, formats, and regional behavior. Then test whether each supported localized experience works as intended. Selenium provides repeatable browser automation for functional journeys. It does not certify translation quality, cultural appropriateness, legal compliance, or complete visual correctness.

Language is not the same as locale

A language identifies the language used, such as Arabic. A locale identifies a language in a regional context, often represented by a BCP 47 tag such as ar-EG for Arabic in Egypt or en-GB for English in the United Kingdom. The distinction matters: the same language can have different date, number, currency, spelling, or market conventions across regions.

Plan coverage around supported markets

Start with your product’s actual supported locales. Do not assume that one locale represents a language or that a handful of examples cover all markets. Prioritize variants that exercise different scripts, directions, formatting rules, input conventions, and market-specific workflows.

  1. Inventory supported experiences. Record the exact locale tags, how users select or receive each experience, and any regional differences in content or functionality.
  2. Choose critical journeys. Include the product’s highest-impact workflows, such as navigation, sign-in, search, checkout or equivalent transactions, form validation, success and error states, and persisted data.
  3. Map meaningful differences. Note whether each locale introduces right-to-left layout, localized digits, different date or currency formats, longer text, distinct address or contact conventions, or market-specific rules.
  4. Prioritize by risk. Focus on the combinations most likely to change behavior or affect a critical journey. A language-region variant should be included because it matters to your product, not because it is a convenient stand-in for others.

Localization validation is broader than a single automated test pass: Microsoft distinguishes functional, visual, and linguistic validation and identifies market-specific risks such as address formats and local contact information. See Microsoft Learn’s localization testing guidance.

Set the application locale and browser environment

First set the product’s own language or locale using the mechanism it supports: a language selector, URL, account preference, or request setting. Changing the browser locale alone may not change an application that uses a saved account preference or an explicit locale in its URL.

Where the browser and Selenium binding support it, Selenium WebDriver BiDi can also emulate browser locale and time zone. Selenium Python 4.43.0 documents set_locale_override with a BCP 47 locale and targets browsing contexts or user contexts; it also documents set_timezone_override with an IANA time-zone name or offset string. Check the documentation and support for the specific browser and binding you run—these APIs should not be assumed portable to every Selenium setup. See the Selenium Python BiDi browser API.

Example: set the locale with Selenium Python BiDi

The following illustrates the documented override calls for a Selenium Python setup with BiDi support. It is not a complete browser-launch or application-navigation script: configure the driver and BiDi connection for your project’s supported browser and Selenium version, then apply the overrides to the intended context before exercising the site.

# Illustrative Selenium Python BiDi calls; requires a configured BiDi connection.
# Use a locale and time zone supported by your test case.
await bidi_browser.set_locale_override("fr-CA", contexts=[context_id])
await bidi_browser.set_timezone_override("America/Toronto", contexts=[context_id])

Here, fr-CA is a locale tag and America/Toronto is an IANA time-zone name. The bidi_browser, connection, and context_id are placeholders for objects created by your project’s BiDi setup; they are not a standalone driver API. Consult the linked Selenium API for the exact method signature in your installed binding and verify browser support before adopting the calls.

Run the same workflows across locales

Use the same journey and equivalent test data for each selected locale, while allowing for expected market-specific differences. Selenium WebDriver drives a browser through its automation interface as a user would, locally or on a remote machine; Selenium Grid can run tests across machines and platform combinations. See the Selenium WebDriver documentation.

  1. Start the browser with the intended environment, including the relevant locale and time zone when supported.
  2. Set the application’s locale using its supported mechanism, then confirm that the expected localized experience loaded.
  3. Perform the same critical workflow steps used for other locales.
  4. Assert functional outcomes using stable identifiers or locale-neutral values where possible.
  5. Capture browser-visible failures and enough run details to reproduce them.

For example, a checkout test can verify that a purchase completes, required fields are validated, and the order persists. The displayed currency string is a separate presentation assertion; the underlying amount and currency should also be checked as structured values.

Separate data correctness from localized display

Dates, numbers, currencies, and units can look different across locales. A numeric date such as 03/04/2026 may be interpreted differently in different regions; a currency amount may use a different decimal separator, grouping separator, symbol, or symbol position. Do not treat a localized display string as the machine-readable value.

W3C internationalization guidance recommends language- and culture-neutral representations for machine-readable data because culturally formatted values can be ambiguous. Test the stored or transmitted value separately from how the interface formats it. For instance, assert the intended date or numeric value through an API or structured application state where available, then separately verify the expected locale-specific display. See W3C Internationalization Best Practices for Spec Developers.

Test locale-sensitive edge cases

Choose cases that reflect the product’s markets and risk areas. Unicode CLDR provides locale-dependent data for formatting and related language behavior and supports over 100 distinct languages, according to the Unicode CLDR project overview. That breadth does not mean every product supports every language or locale.

  • Text length and fallback: Check expansion, truncation, missing translations, and fallback strings in labels, buttons, navigation, and error messages.
  • Script and fonts: Confirm that non-Latin scripts render with the intended characters, line breaks, and font coverage.
  • Direction and mixed text: Test right-to-left pages, alignment, navigation order, and mixed-direction content such as an Arabic sentence containing a URL or Latin product name. W3C guidance discusses language and direction metadata as well as sensitive values: W3C Internationalization Best Practices.
  • Digits and separators: Check localized digits, decimal and grouping separators, and date and time formats for the selected locale.
  • Currency and units: Verify both localized formatting and the underlying value, including any market-specific unit conventions relevant to the product.
  • Sorting and plural forms: Include locale-sensitive ordering and singular, plural, or other message forms where the interface uses them.
  • Names and input conventions: Validate that forms accept expected names and market-specific address, phone, and other contact formats.
  • Market workflows: Check product rules or content that differ by market, rather than assuming that changing text alone creates a valid localized experience.

Combine automation with human review

Automated assertions can establish that a journey completed, an expected element appeared, or a formatted value matched a rule. They do not establish that wording is natural, accurate, or appropriate in context. Pair Selenium checks with a visual sanity check for layout and usability and review by someone qualified in the target language and market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ask a target-language expert to assess text accuracy and in-context meaning.
  • Inspect representative screens for clipping, awkward line breaks, overlapping controls, and right-to-left layout issues.
  • Use market-specific criteria for content and user inputs, including formats such as addresses and local contact information.

Make failures reproducible

For each failed run, record the exact locale tag and the environment that produced it. This matters especially when a test depends on browser locale or time-zone emulation, whose availability varies by browser and binding.

  • Locale tag and the method used to select the application locale
  • Browser, browser driver, Selenium binding, and Selenium version
  • Time zone, operating system, and machine or Grid configuration
  • Application build and relevant test data
  • Expected behavior, actual result, and a screenshot or other useful failure evidence

Common problems and fixes

The application stays in its default language

Cause: The application may prioritize a saved account preference, URL locale, or its own selector over the browser locale. Fix: Set the locale through the product’s documented mechanism and assert that the localized page loaded before continuing.

The date or currency assertion fails only in one locale

Cause: The test may compare a localized display string to a locale-neutral expectation, or may have conflated presentation with stored data. Fix: Assert the underlying structured value separately, then test the locale-specific presentation using an expectation for that locale.

A BiDi override call is unavailable or has no effect

Cause: The installed Selenium binding or browser may not support the documented method or the needed context target. Fix: Check the API documentation for your installed version and confirm browser support; use the application’s own locale-selection mechanism for application behavior that does not depend on browser emulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text is correct but a screen is broken

Cause: Functional automation does not establish that a layout remains usable after translation or direction changes. Fix: Add visual inspection for representative screens and have a target-language reviewer assess the text in context.

A test is hard to reproduce on another machine

Cause: The failure report may omit locale, time zone, browser, operating system, or build details. Fix: Record the environment and test data with every failure, and keep the locale tag explicit in the test configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Selenium tell whether a translation is accurate?

No. It can automate browser behavior and check observable results, but translation accuracy and cultural appropriateness require qualified language and market review.

Does changing the browser locale always change a website’s language?

No. A site may use its own selector, URL locale, or saved account preference. Set and verify the application locale through the supported product mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a language and a locale?

A language identifies the language; a locale adds regional context that can affect formats and conventions. Use the exact supported locale tags relevant to your product.
