SIPVicious is an open-source toolkit for authorized security assessments of SIP-based office phones and PBX systems. It can discover SIP services, probe extension behavior, test SIP authentication passwords, and organize results. Use it only with the network owner’s written permission: scan methods can create unnecessary traffic, and an INVITE probe can make phones ring.
What SIPVicious can test
SIPVicious is software for auditing SIP-based VoIP systems; a physical desk phone is optional, not a requirement. Its tools address different parts of an assessment:
| Tool | Documented role | Important limitation or impact |
|---|---|---|
svmap |
Discovers SIP devices and PBX servers by scanning hosts, ranges, and ports. | OPTIONS is the documented default method; INVITE can ring phones. SIPVicious project README and svmap usage guide. |
svwar |
Checks extension behavior, including whether authentication is required. | Findings depend on the extensions tested and how the PBX responds. SIPVicious project README and project FAQ. |
svcrack |
Tests SIP digest-authentication passwords using numeric ranges or dictionary files. | It is an online password-testing tool, not a guarantee that a password can be recovered. SIPVicious project README. |
svreport |
Manages sessions and exports reports in PDF, XML, CSV, and plain text. | PDF export may require the optional ReportLab dependency. SIPVicious project README and Basics guide. |
svcrash |
Can reply to certain svwar or svcrack messages in a way that crashes older versions. |
Its documented behavior can disrupt a tool; do not normalize using it against live systems. SIPVicious project README. |
Get authorization and define the test
The SIPVicious FAQ advises requesting permission before using the suite against a network. Written approval should identify the in-scope PBX and SIP hosts, permitted techniques, test window, and an escalation contact. A production phone system can affect staff and business operations, so do not assume that general network-testing permission covers ringing endpoints or online password attempts.
Agree in advance on whether discovery, extension checks, and authentication testing are allowed, and whether any method that may ring phones is explicitly excluded. The FAQ also warns about unnecessary traffic from some scans. Read the SIPVicious FAQ.
#1 Best Overall
- The phone only works with VoIP
- 2 dual-color line keys (with 2 SIP accounts and up to 2 call appearances), 3 XML programmable context-sensitive soft keys, 3-way conference
- HD wideband audio, superb full-duplex hands-free speakerphone with advanced acoustic echo cancellation and excellent double-talk performance.
- Large phonebook (up to 500 contacts) and call history - up to 200 records
- Automated provisioning using TR-069 or encrypted XML configuration file, SRTP and TLS for advanced security protection, 802.1x for media access control
Prepare SIPVicious
Use the project’s official installation instructions and confirm the current package or release and its behavior before an assessment. The project’s Basics page, edited April 13, 2026, lists Python 3 requirements, operating-system notes, and installation options; it does not establish a release number to treat as the latest. Optional features may need additional dependencies, including ReportLab for PDF reports.
For a lab, a SIP desk phone can serve as an example endpoint, but the project does not require or endorse a particular model. A controlled lab is useful when you need to observe how a PBX responds without exposing a production phone system. See the official Basics guide.
Rank #2
- Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6: Enjoy seamless wireless connectivity with the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, providing faster speeds and improved coverage.
- Cordless Convenience: This cordless phone offers the freedom to move around while on a call, without being tethered to a base station.
- Large Color Display: The
- 4-inch color LCD screen provides a clear and vibrant interface for easy navigation and call management.
- Intuitive Controls: The phone features a user-friendly keypad and navigation buttons for effortless operation.
Run an authorized assessment
This is a practical workflow based on the documented capabilities, not a mandatory sequence from the project. Check flags and behavior against the installed version, and run commands only for targets and methods covered by the authorization.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

svmap. Limit the scan to approved hosts and ports. The documented default is OPTIONS. The guide supports scanning non-default ports and alternate methods, but broader probing can increase impact. Do not use INVITE unless its potential to ring phones has been explicitly approved. Consult the svmap usage guide. - Assess extension behavior with
svwar. Use only the extension range or candidates authorized for the test. Record responses and the conditions under which they were observed; do not interpret a quiet result as evidence that no extensions exist. - Test authentication only when expressly in scope.
svcrackperforms online SIP digest-authentication password testing with a numeric range or dictionary input. Agree on permitted accounts and test limits with the PBX owner, and avoid treating production authentication attempts as a harmless check. - Preserve evidence and report. Record targets, test window, methods, observed responses, and limitations. Use
svreportto manage sessions and export a report in a supported format; account for the optional ReportLab dependency if producing PDF.
Interpret scan results carefully
A missing response does not prove a device or extension is absent
Results can be affected by the network path, filtering, SIP configuration, port choice, scan method, and the extension guesses supplied. A scan that covers only default ports or one method may miss services configured differently. The svmap guide supports non-default port scanning and alternate methods, but does not claim complete coverage.

- USB 2.0 port for USB recording, wired/wireless USB headsets, and EXP50
PBX behavior can conceal extension validity
Some PBXs return similar responses for valid and invalid extensions, making the usual enumeration interpretation unreliable. The project FAQ cites Asterisk’s alwaysauthreject=yes setting as one example of behavior that can reduce extension disclosure; it does not present the setting as a complete defense, and other enumeration methods may remain possible. See the FAQ discussion of svwar results.
Feature descriptions are not performance guarantees
The official project materials describe functions and setup, but do not establish measured accuracy or speed benchmarks. Treat findings as observations to validate with the PBX owner and configuration, not as a guarantee that the system is secure or vulnerable.

What SIPVicious cannot tell you by itself
- That all SIP devices, ports, or extensions were found: scan coverage and target responses vary.
- That an extension is absent because no result appeared: valid and invalid extensions may be indistinguishable to the scanner.
- That a password can be recovered:
svcracktests credentials but does not guarantee success. - That a PBX is secure because these tools found nothing: the official documentation does not establish complete coverage or assurance.
- That a particular desk-phone model is needed: SIPVicious is software, and the official materials specify no required phone.
