Paying less for streaming usually comes down to a simple habit: keep only the services your household actually uses, and review each recurring charge before it renews. The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation reported that consumers spent an average of $69 a month on streaming services in 2025, 13% more than in 2024. That is a reported average—not a target or estimate for every household—and the committee’s snapshot cites consumer reports and credits Statista in its graphic.
Start by finding every streaming charge
Make one list of the services you pay for and how each one is billed. A subscription may appear on a credit-card statement under the service name, through an app store or streaming device, or as part of a membership or bundle. Record the price, renewal date, and whether the plan is promotional or discounted.
- Check bank and card statements for recurring charges.
- Review subscription settings for app stores and devices you use to sign up.
- Check memberships and bundles for video services already included.
- Mark services nobody in the household has watched recently, along with the next billing date.
This inventory prevents a common budgeting mistake: paying separately for something already included elsewhere, or overlooking an old subscription because it is billed through a different account.

Judge each service by the shows, films, sports, or other programming your household expects to watch—not by the size of its catalog. A subscription can be worthwhile for a particular season or event without being necessary year-round. If you only need it for a limited viewing window, reassess when that window ends and pause or cancel if the service no longer earns its place.

Compare ad-supported and ad-free plans
A lower-priced plan may include advertising or offer different features, so compare the actual plan terms rather than price alone. S&P Global Market Intelligence’s analysis of selected U.S. subscription video services found that most entry-level plans are now ad-supported. For those selected services and tiers, average ad-free plan prices grew at a 7.7% compound annual rate from 2020 to 2026, compared with 4.6% for entry-level plan prices.

At the close of Q1 2026, the same analysis put the average entry-level retail price at $10.77 a month. That figure excludes promotions, discounts, and bundles; it describes selected U.S. services, not every streaming plan or a price you should expect to pay.
If ads are acceptable, an entry-level plan may reduce the bill. If you prefer ad-free viewing, check whether the higher tier’s other features—such as downloads, picture quality, or simultaneous streams—are useful to you. Plan features and advertising exceptions vary by service.

Do the math before choosing a bundle
A bundle saves money only when it costs less than the standalone services you would otherwise buy and still includes the programming and features you want. Compare the bundle’s total price with the total for those specific alternatives. Include ad tiers, annual billing, promotional periods, and the price after a discount expires in the calculation.
- List the services included and whether each is ad-supported.
- Compare the bundle price with the standalone plans you would actually subscribe to.
- Check for feature differences, such as streaming quality, downloads, or concurrent streams.
- Note the promotion end date and the renewal price, if stated.
S&P Global Market Intelligence identifies bundles, discounted annual plans, and one-time promotions as potential ways to save. That does not mean every bundle is a deal: paying for an extra service you would not otherwise use can erase the apparent discount.

Check what a membership already includes
In the U.S., Amazon says Prime Video is included with a Prime membership. Its March 2026 announcement listed Prime at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually and Prime Video Ultra at an additional $4.99 monthly, or $45.99 annually for annual Prime members. Ultra adds ad-free viewing and other features, but Amazon says some live TV and events and selected content can still include ads. See Amazon’s Prime Video Ultra announcement for the terms.

The practical distinction is between the included benefit and a paid upgrade. If the included service meets your needs, an upgrade is an optional expense, not a requirement for using Prime Video. Verify current eligibility and terms before changing plans.

Use current renewal prices, not old screenshots
Streaming prices and promotion terms change, so check the official account or help page before a renewal. Peacock’s official notice says prices changed effective August 18, 2026: Select is $8.99 monthly, Premium is $12.99 monthly, and Premium Plus is $19.99 monthly. The notice also lists annual prices and explains that existing subscribers receive the changed price on a billing date on or after September 17, 2026; a promotion continues until its promotional period ends. See Peacock’s price-change notice for the relevant plan and account details.
That example is specific to Peacock’s U.S. plans and stated effective dates. Your renewal amount can depend on your plan, billing date, and promotion. Check those details in your own account instead of assuming a published price applies to every subscriber.
Consider an antenna for local broadcast channels
If the channels you want are local broadcast stations, over-the-air reception may be an alternative to paying for access to those channels. The FCC says you need an appropriate antenna and either a digital TV or an analog TV connected to a digital-to-analog converter box. Reception depends on your location, and an antenna does not provide cable networks or subscription libraries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Check the FCC Digital TV Reception Maps for stations and estimated reception in your area.
- Use the map as a guide, not a guarantee that reception will work inside your home.
- Confirm that your TV is digital, or determine whether you need a converter box, and connect an appropriate antenna.
The FCC’s guidance is available in How can I watch a station over the air without a pay TV subscription? An antenna is relevant only if the local stations you want are receivable where you live; it is not a replacement for streaming catalogs or cable-only networks.
Make the review a recurring bill check
Before each renewal, ask whether the service still has a clear job in your household: a show you are watching, a sport or event you follow, or a library you use often. Then compare the current plan with available tiers or bundles, check whether a membership already covers it, and decide whether to keep, change, pause, or cancel. This approach does not require one universal “cheapest” combination; the right mix depends on your viewing habits, location, tolerance for ads, and eligibility for promotions.
