Use Ctrl+V in the active Claude Code prompt to paste a screenshot. On macOS, use Ctrl+V, not Cmd+V; Claude Code’s documented behavior treats Cmd+V as text paste. If clipboard paste is unavailable, drag the image file into the terminal. Then tell Claude Code exactly what to inspect, explain or change.
The two supported ways to attach an image

Clipboard paste is usually the quickest keyboard workflow. Dragging a file is the practical fallback when a terminal emulator does not expose image data through its clipboard integration. Anthropic’s Claude Code user FAQ, dated August 7, 2026, documents both methods and specifically says that Mac users should press Ctrl, not Cmd.
Paste a screenshot step by step
- Capture or copy the image. Take a screenshot, or copy an existing PNG or JPEG to the operating system clipboard. If you intend to drag it, save it somewhere easy to reach.
- Start Claude Code and focus its prompt. Click or otherwise focus the interactive Claude Code input, not another terminal pane, editor, shell prompt or multiplexer window.
- Paste it. Press Ctrl+V. This is the image shortcut on macOS as well as the documented cross-platform action. Do not substitute Cmd+V on a Mac.
- Wait for the attachment to appear. The prompt should show that an image has been attached or is ready for Claude Code to inspect. The exact visual indicator depends on the terminal and Claude Code version.
- Describe the job. Add a precise request, such as “Read the error message in this screenshot and explain the likely cause,” or “Compare this UI with the current implementation and list the changes needed.”
- Supply missing context. If the screenshot does not show source code, logs, dimensions or the intended behavior, include those details in text or point Claude Code to the relevant files.
macOS: why Cmd+V does not work
On macOS, Cmd+V is the normal text-paste shortcut, and Claude Code follows that distinction. A screenshot copied to the image clipboard therefore requires Ctrl+V. If pressing Cmd+V inserts text, nothing is wrong with the screenshot; use Ctrl+V while the Claude Code prompt has focus.
Mac recovery checklist
- Click inside the Claude Code input before pressing the shortcut.
- Confirm that the clipboard contains an image rather than only copied text.
- Press Ctrl+V, not Cmd+V.
- If the image still does not attach, save it as PNG or JPEG and drag the file into the terminal.
Linux terminals and other Unix-like environments
The documented workflow is the same: focus the Claude Code prompt and press Ctrl+V, or drag an image file into the terminal. Terminal emulator behavior varies, especially for image data in the system clipboard. If a keyboard paste produces no attachment, file drag-and-drop is the more reproducible option.

Windows and WSL
Claude Code is documented as supported on Windows through WSL. The available FAQ guidance does not provide a shortcut matrix for every Windows terminal, WSL integration or emulator. Start with Ctrl+V if your terminal exposes image clipboard data; otherwise use the documented drag-and-drop method. Save the screenshot as a PNG or JPEG first if dragging directly from a clipboard tool is not possible.
How to write a useful screenshot request
An image gives Claude Code visual evidence, but your instruction defines the task. State what to read, compare or change and identify the desired output.
Error dialogs and failed commands
Ask Claude Code to transcribe the visible message, identify likely causes and propose checks. For example: “Read the error text, explain what it means, and give me the three most likely fixes. Do not change files yet.” Include the command that produced the error if it is not visible.
UI implementation reviews
Tell Claude Code which route or component is shown and what “correct” means: “Compare this screenshot with the implementation in src/components/Checkout.tsx. List differences in spacing, typography and responsive behavior, then suggest edits.” A screenshot cannot reveal hidden states, interaction rules or exact CSS values, so provide those separately when they matter.

Design handoff and mockups
Specify whether the image is a target design or the current output. Ask for an actionable plan, not an unbounded description: “Identify the visible layout regions, map each to existing components, and list the files that need changes.”
Whiteboards, diagrams and photos
Ask for transcription first, then analysis: “Transcribe the labels and arrows, mark anything unreadable, and explain the flow.” This makes uncertainty visible instead of encouraging guesses about cropped or illegible content.
When an image will not attach
Nothing appears after Ctrl+V
Check focus first. A different terminal pane, editor or shell may have received the keystroke. Copy the image again, return to the interactive Claude Code prompt and retry. If there is still no attachment, save the image and drag the file into the terminal.
Cmd+V pastes text on a Mac
This is the expected macOS behavior documented by Anthropic. Use Ctrl+V for the image clipboard path.

Drag-and-drop does nothing
Ensure the file is an ordinary PNG or JPEG and that you are dragging into the Claude Code terminal window, not an unrelated application. Try a local file path rather than a cloud-only placeholder. If the terminal is running through a remote desktop or browser, its file-transfer rules may prevent the drop.
SSH or tmux behaves differently
Remote SSH sessions and tmux add another clipboard and mouse-event layer. The FAQ discusses copy/paste and mouse issues in these environments but does not establish a universal image-paste rule. Treat behavior as terminal- and environment-dependent. A local saved image plus drag-and-drop is the safest documented fallback; if the remote setup cannot receive files, transfer the image to the remote host by your normal approved method and then attach it from there.
The image is unreadable
Use the original-resolution file rather than a thumbnail or compressed chat preview. Crop unrelated desktop content, keep error text at a readable size and tell Claude Code which region matters. If text is still too small, paste the text or log as plain text alongside the image.
What Claude Code can and cannot infer
- Visible evidence: error dialogs, labels, layout, colors, obvious alignment problems and diagram relationships.
- Hidden evidence: source code, DOM structure, network requests, computed styles, hover states and off-screen content are not guaranteed to be present.
- Ambiguous evidence: blurred text, cropped controls and responsive behavior at other viewport sizes require your context or additional screenshots.
For reliable code changes, combine the screenshot with a narrowly scoped request, the relevant file or route, reproduction steps and acceptance criteria. Ask for an explanation or plan before edits when the image alone leaves room for interpretation.

Practical reliability and privacy checks
- Use a stable, local image file when the clipboard is shared with other applications or remote sessions.
- Crop secrets, personal data and unrelated browser tabs before attaching a screenshot.
- For a visual regression task, capture the same route at the same viewport and device scale each time.
- When using an API capture, set waits for a selector, delay or network idle when content loads asynchronously, and use custom headers or cookies only when your authorization permits it.
- Keep the original image if you may need to verify a transcription or reproduce a visual bug later.

Does Claude Code automatically fix what it sees?
No. The screenshot is evidence. Your prompt must say whether you want transcription, diagnosis, comparison, a plan or code changes, and you should review proposed edits.
Which image formats should I use?
PNG or JPEG files are the documented drag-and-drop fallback. Prefer the clearest original file when small text is important.
