To paste a screenshot into a website, copy the capture as image data, click the site’s editor or paste-enabled upload area, and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Linux. On macOS, use Command+V. If the page ignores the image, save the capture as PNG or JPEG and use its Upload, Attach, or Choose file control instead.
What must be true before Ctrl+V can paste an image
A screenshot paste is not the same as pasting a filename. Your capture tool must place image data—normally PNG data—on the system clipboard. The destination must also expose an editable control or an upload workflow that accepts image clipboard data.
Modern browsers commonly expose text, HTML, and PNG clipboard formats to web applications. A normal, non-editable part of a webpage has nowhere to insert an image, so pressing Ctrl+V there may appear to do nothing. Browser security rules also mean that a site may block or limit clipboard access through its menus; the keyboard shortcut is usually the dependable method.
- Source: the screenshot must be copied, not merely displayed or saved under a filename.
- Destination: click inside a chat composer, document editor, comment box, form control, or paste-enabled upload area.
- Shortcut: use Ctrl+V on Windows/Linux or Command+V on macOS. Do not use the text-only shortcut Ctrl+Shift+V or Command+Shift+V when you need image data.
The universal paste workflow
- Capture the screen, window, selected region, or webpage with your operating system or browser screenshot tool.
- Choose the tool’s Copy option, or use the operating system capture workflow that automatically copies the image to the clipboard.
- Open the website and click inside the exact editor, chat composer, comment field, or paste-enabled upload area.
- Press Ctrl+V (Windows/Linux) or Command+V (macOS).
- Wait for a thumbnail, preview, or attachment chip. Submit the form only after the site shows that the image was received.
This workflow lets you paste without first creating a reusable file. If the site rejects clipboard images, use the fallback in the troubleshooting section: save the capture and select it through the site’s file picker.

Windows: copy a screen capture, then paste it
Use a capture that copies to the clipboard
Microsoft Support explains that a Windows screen capture can be copied automatically to the clipboard. After taking the capture, switch to the browser, click the destination field, and press Ctrl+V. The same shortcut works in a browser field that accepts image paste just as it does in a document, email, or other file.
If the capture was only saved
Some capture workflows create a PNG file without putting image data on the clipboard. Open the capture tool again and choose its Copy command, or open the saved image and copy it. Then return to the browser and press Ctrl+V. If the website still refuses the image, use Upload or Attach and select the saved PNG or JPEG.
macOS: use Command+V
Copy the selected capture
Use the macOS screenshot shortcut or screenshot interface configured to copy the selected capture to the clipboard. Select the region or window, click the browser’s destination, and press Command+V. Google’s browser guidance identifies Command+V as the Mac paste shortcut in browser-based editors.
When macOS created a file instead
If the screenshot appeared as a file rather than clipboard content, recapture it with the copy-to-clipboard option. You can also open the image, copy it, and paste it into the browser. A site that does not support image clipboard data will still require its file picker.

Linux: the same shortcut, with a clipboard-capable capture tool
Linux desktop environments and screenshot utilities differ, but the paste side is the same: make sure the utility’s Copy action places an image on the clipboard, click the target editor, and press Ctrl+V. If your utility only saves a file, select that file through the website’s upload control. A text-only paste shortcut will not carry the PNG image.
Paste directly from Firefox
Firefox’s Screenshot tool can capture a visible part of a page or a full page. After selecting the area, choose Copy to put the image on the clipboard. Mozilla documents Ctrl+C for Windows/Linux and Command+C for macOS for this copy action; then use Ctrl+V or Command+V in the destination website.
- Open the Firefox page you want to capture.
- Start the Firefox Screenshot tool and choose a visible-area or full-page capture.
- Choose Copy, not only the download or save option.
- Open the target editor in the browser and paste with the platform shortcut.
Firefox also provides a save/download path. Use it when the destination does not handle clipboard images.
Paste directly from Microsoft Edge
Edge Screenshot can capture a selected area or a full webpage and optionally add markup. Microsoft lists Ctrl+Shift+S as the Edge Screenshot shortcut, although availability can vary by device, market, and browser version. After the capture, choose Copy; Microsoft says the result can be pasted as an image from the clipboard into supported applications.

If your Edge build does not expose the feature, use the operating system capture tool or save the screenshot and upload the resulting file.

A website may accept pasted text but reject images, or accept images only after you click a specific drop zone. The absence of a preview after a few seconds is a useful indication that you should switch to the file picker.
