What you need to know before starting
There are two jobs here: turn the website into a PDF, then set a password that is required to open that PDF. The browser’s Save as PDF command handles the first job. The Acrobat protection workflow handles the second.
For an open password, choose the option labeled Viewing in Acrobat’s password dialog. Acrobat distinguishes that from Editing; a setting that controls editing, printing, or copying is not the same as requiring a password to view the document. If your goal is to keep the contents unreadable until a recipient enters a password, select Viewing.
The steps below use the labels in Adobe’s current help documentation available on September 29, 2026. Interface labels can change. Adobe also documents a web-based option, but that workflow saves the protected copy to Adobe cloud storage.

Create or download the website PDF
Save a web page as a PDF in Chrome
- Open the page you want to save in Chrome on your computer.
- Open the print dialog with File > Print, Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- In the print window, select Save as PDF as the destination.
- Choose any print settings you need, such as pages to include, and select Save.
- Choose a location and filename you can find again. The resulting file is not password-protected yet.
Use a PDF the site already provides
If the website offers a PDF download, download and save that file instead of printing the page. Either way, make sure you know where the unprotected source file is before moving on. Chrome’s documented print flow saves the page as PDF; it does not provide the Acrobat open-password step.
Add a password required to open the PDF in Acrobat desktop
- Open the saved PDF in Adobe Acrobat desktop.
- Select All tools > Protect a PDF.
- Select Protect with password.
- Choose Viewing when prompted for the protection type. Do not choose an editing or permissions setting if the requirement is a password before the document can be opened.
- Enter the password, then enter it again to confirm.
- Select Apply.
- Save the PDF. If Acrobat asks whether to replace the existing file, choose deliberately: retaining an unprotected original means that copy will still open without the new password.
Keep the password somewhere you can recover it before closing the document. Adobe states that it does not store the password and cannot retrieve it if it is lost or forgotten. Adobe suggests using a password management app to store it.
Choose the workflow that fits where you want the file handled

Protect a PDF using Acrobat on the web
Adobe documents this sequence: choose Edit > Protect a PDF, select a file, enter and confirm the password, then set it. The protected copy is saved to Adobe cloud storage and is labeled with a “_protected” suffix. Consider that stated storage destination before choosing this route for sensitive material. The documented workflow does not, by itself, establish broader details such as retention periods or comprehensive privacy terms.
Automate protection for generated PDFs
Adobe’s PDF Services API is the documented option for programmatic PDF protection. Adobe describes support for AES-128 and AES-256 encryption and granular permissions, including print and copy-related controls. It requires developer integration; it is not the same as selecting a password in Chrome’s print window. Choose an API workflow only if you need protection to be part of an automated process and can implement and manage that integration.

Check that the password does what you intend
After saving, close the protected PDF and open it again. Confirm that Acrobat prompts for the password before displaying the document. This simple check helps catch the common mistake of changing an editing or usage restriction while leaving the file viewable without an open password.
- Open password: prompts a reader for a password before viewing the document. In Acrobat’s desktop password workflow, this is the Viewing choice.
- Usage restrictions: settings for actions such as editing, printing, or copying. These are separate from the open-password goal.
If you also need restrictions on printing, editing, or copying, review those settings separately rather than assuming that an open password configures them. Adobe documents those permissions as distinct controls. The cited documentation does not establish that such restrictions are impossible to bypass, so do not treat them as an absolute guarantee against copying or redistribution.
Store and share the password carefully
Store the password in a place you can retrieve later. Adobe recommends a password management app, and Google’s general security guidance recommends password managers for creating and managing strong, unique passwords. These are general account-security recommendations, not a PDF-specific rule for how to deliver a password to someone else.
Share the password only with the intended recipient. Google cautions against sharing passwords; the reviewed guidance does not prescribe a particular PDF-password delivery method. The practical priority is to ensure the recipient can obtain the password while avoiding unintended access.

Troubleshooting
The PDF opens without asking for a password
Reopen the file and check that you selected Viewing, entered and confirmed the password, selected Apply, and saved the protected result. Then close and reopen that saved copy to verify the prompt. If you kept an unprotected original, make sure you are testing the protected copy rather than the original.
The recipient can view the file but cannot perform certain actions
You may have configured permissions such as editing, printing, or copying rather than an open password. Revisit Acrobat’s protection choices and use Viewing to require a password before opening. Permissions controls are separate settings.
You cannot remember the password
Adobe says a forgotten password cannot be retrieved. Check the password manager or other secure location where you recorded it. If you cannot recover it, the reviewed documentation does not provide a retrieval method; keep the password available before closing a file you have protected.
You used Acrobat on the web and cannot find the protected copy
Adobe says the web workflow saves the protected copy on Adobe cloud storage and adds a “_protected” suffix. Look for that named copy in the destination associated with the web workflow rather than assuming the original local file was overwritten.

The website printout is incomplete or not laid out as expected
Return to the browser print dialog and review the selected destination and pages before saving again. The print-to-PDF workflow captures the page as presented for printing; it is separate from applying an Acrobat password. The reviewed Chrome guidance does not establish how every website will render in print view.
Frequently asked questions
Can I password-protect a PDF directly from Chrome’s Save as PDF dialog?
Chrome documents using the print window to save a PDF, but its documented print flow does not include a password-protection step. Save the PDF first, then protect it in Acrobat or use an appropriate automated PDF workflow.
Does the password prevent a recipient from copying or printing?
Not by itself as a general guarantee. Acrobat treats open-password protection and permissions such as printing, editing, and copying as separate controls. Configure the permissions you need separately, and do not assume they make copying impossible.
