Pass data to a component with props
React turns attributes on a custom component into fields on the single props object the component receives. You can use that object directly or destructure the fields you need. React’s props guide explains this pattern.

}The parameter {'{ person, size = 100 }'} destructures the props object. By contrast, function Avatar(person) names the entire props object person; it does not select a person field.

Choose a prop shape that makes inputs clear
- Separate named props:
<Avatar person={person} size={80} />makes each input visible at the call site. - A grouped object: Pass related values together when the child naturally works with them as one object, such as
person={person}. - Nested JSX as children: Use this when a wrapper should display supplied content without needing to know what that content is.
Pass a function to a child component
A function is also a value, so you can pass it as a prop. A child can call that function to request an action from its parent. For example, a reusable button can receive its click behavior without knowing what the action does:

}Passing onClick={handleClick} gives the child a function to call when the user clicks. React’s event guide puts it plainly: “Event handlers must be passed, not called!”

Pass an argument to an event handler
When a handler needs a particular value, wrap the call in a function so it runs when the event happens—not while React renders the component.

}The arrow function closes over item.id and calls handleSelect on click. In contrast, onClick={handleSelect(item.id)} calls the handler immediately during rendering and passes its return value where React expects a handler function.

Use the event object when needed
React supplies the event object to the handler when the event occurs. If the callback needs both a fixed value and the event, accept the event in the wrapper and pass both deliberately:

</button>For built-in browser elements, event props use names such as onClick. A custom component can instead expose an application-specific prop such as onPlayMovie and connect it to a DOM event internally. The built-in event conventions are documented in React’s common components reference.

Named handler or inline arrow?

Use children for nested JSX
JSX placed between a component’s opening and closing tags is passed in the children prop. This lets a wrapper arrange content without inspecting its details.

A parent can explicitly pass selected values to another component:

}JSX spread can forward a set of props as well: <Avatar {...props} />. Use it selectively: explicit props make a component’s inputs easier to see, while repeated forwarding may mean the components should be composed with children instead.
Defaults and read-only props
A default in destructuring applies when a prop is missing or undefined:

}It does not replace null or 0; those are explicit values. Props are read-only inputs for a render, so a child should not modify them. If data needs to change, have the child call a parent-provided function and let the parent render again with updated props. See React’s props guide for the parent-to-child data flow.
Client and server component boundary note
This guidance covers ordinary client-side component composition. React’s error reference includes a warning about passing event handlers to Client Component props in a server-component context, but the exact serialization and boundary rules depend on the framework context; this basic callback pattern does not define those rules. See React error #374 when diagnosing that specific boundary error.
