To pair a HoloLens with Visual Studio, turn on Developer Mode on the headset, tap Pair in its developer settings, then enter the PIN shown on the headset when Visual Studio prompts you during deployment. Pair each development PC separately. Choose Remote Machine for Wi-Fi or Device for USB.
What you need before pairing
Microsoft’s tool installation guidance lists Visual Studio 2022, a Windows 10 or 11 SDK, and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) workload. It also lists the .NET desktop development and Desktop development with C++ workloads; Unity projects may also need Game development with Unity. Requirements can change, so check Microsoft’s current tool installation guidance for the supported configuration.
For USB deployment or debugging, include USB Device Connectivity in the UWP workload. Missing this component can prevent USB deployment from working.
Enable Developer Mode on HoloLens
- On the headset, open Settings > Update > For developers.
- Turn on Developer Mode. On Windows Holographic 21H1 or newer, Microsoft’s Visual Studio deployment guide also says to enable Device discovery.
In a multi-user setup, Developer Mode may be unavailable to someone who is not the device owner or an administrator. The device owner can enable it, or IT can configure the relevant developer-unlock policy through device management.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose USB or Wi-Fi deployment
| Connection | Visual Studio target | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Remote Machine | Find the headset’s IP address in Settings > Network & Internet, then enter it manually in Visual Studio. Microsoft recommends manual entry rather than relying on automatic detection. |
| USB on HoloLens 2 | Device | Connect the PC and headset with a USB-C cable. Microsoft recommends UsbNcm, supported by default on HoloLens 2. Find the UsbNcm IP in developer settings or Device Portal; winappdeploycmd devices is another documented way to find it. |
| USB on first-generation HoloLens | Not recommended in the cited guidance | Microsoft recommends Wi-Fi for HoloLens 1. Do not assume HoloLens 2 UsbNcm steps apply to first-generation hardware. |
Microsoft says IpOverUsb is no longer recommended. The connection guidance is in its Device Portal documentation.
Pair the headset with Visual Studio
- In Visual Studio, open your HoloLens project and choose the target appropriate to your connection: Remote Machine for Wi-Fi or Device for USB.
- On HoloLens, open Settings > Update > For developers and tap Pair.
- Keep the PIN dialog open on the headset. When Visual Studio requests a PIN during the first deployment, enter the PIN displayed on HoloLens.
- When pairing completes, dismiss the PIN dialog on the headset.
Pairing is specific to a PC: repeat these steps for every development computer that needs to deploy to that HoloLens. Microsoft’s deployment guide says that after pairing, “This PC is now paired with the HoloLens and you can deploy apps automatically.” To remove pairings, tap Clear on the same developer settings page.

Deploy and debug your app
- Choose the build architecture appropriate for the device. For physical HoloLens 2 deployment, Microsoft specifies ARM or ARM64.
- To deploy and start a debugging session, select Debug > Start debugging.
- To deploy without starting debugging, select Build > Deploy Solution.
Device Portal is optional
Visual Studio does not require Device Portal for app deployment. Device Portal is a browser-based tool for managing a headset remotely over Wi-Fi or USB; Microsoft says it is not intended for use in deployed organizational applications. On the first browser connection, a certificate warning may appear because the device uses a self-signed certificate. Microsoft documents downloading and trusting the device-specific certificate on a trusted network. This browser certificate warning is separate from Visual Studio’s PIN pairing.

Fix common pairing and deployment problems
- Developer Mode is grayed out: Check whether the signed-in user is the device owner or an administrator. Ask the owner to enable it or IT to configure the developer-unlock policy.
- USB deployment fails: Confirm that the Visual Studio UWP workload includes USB Device Connectivity.
- Visual Studio cannot find the headset over Wi-Fi: Enter its IP address manually under the Remote Machine target settings.
- HoloLens 2 app debugging reports “Unable to start debugging” or “Operation not supported. Unknown error: 0x80070057”: Microsoft suggests renaming the package or uninstalling the UWP app.
- You have a first-generation HoloLens: Use Wi-Fi rather than carrying over the HoloLens 2 UsbNcm procedure.
