For a classic Windows Win32 application, package its installer and supporting files into a .intunewin file with Microsoft’s Win32 Content Prep Tool, upload it to Intune as a Windows app (Win32), configure install and detection behavior, then assign it to users or devices. The installer must support unattended installation, and the exact commands and settings depend on the application. Intune also supports other Windows app types, so not every app needs Win32 packaging.
Choose the right Windows app type
Use a Win32 app when you need to deploy a classic installer—especially one with multiple files, custom install commands, detection logic, prerequisites, or upgrade behavior. Intune supports other Windows app types too. For example, Windows line-of-business apps can use MSI, AppX, or AppX bundle formats; see Microsoft’s Windows app deployment guidance for the options and their prerequisites.
If the app is listed in the Enterprise App Catalog, you may be able to add it as a prepackaged Win32 app rather than preparing the package yourself. The catalog is part of Enterprise App Management, a feature of Microsoft Intune Suite. Microsoft configures and confirms the catalog app’s default installation, requirements, and detection settings, but customers remain responsible for ensuring the app meets their needs. See Microsoft’s Enterprise App Catalog documentation.
Check prerequisites before packaging
- Silent installation: The installer must install without user interaction. Obtain the vendor-documented install and uninstall commands; switches differ by installer, so do not assume a generic silent switch.
- Windows edition and enrollment: Microsoft’s Win32 preparation guidance lists Enterprise, Pro, and Education editions. Intune Windows app deployment requires enrolled devices, and line-of-business app deployment is not supported on Windows Home. Confirm the target edition and enrollment state in Microsoft’s Win32 app guidance and Windows app deployment guidance.
- Package size: Microsoft documents a 30 GB-per-app cap for the Win32 workflow. Keep the package within that limit.
- Install context and privileges: Decide whether the app installs in user or system context and whether the targeted users have the permissions it needs. A standard user can fail to install a user-targeted app that requires device-admin privileges.
Prepare the source folder and create the package
Put the setup file and every file it needs beneath one source folder. The Content Prep Tool packages all files and subfolders in that folder, so keep the tool itself and unrelated material elsewhere. If the installer references supporting items such as a license file, place them in a subfolder and use relative paths where appropriate.

Download the current Win32 Content Prep Tool from Microsoft’s Win32 app preparation guidance, then run this documented command pattern:
IntuneWinAppUtil -c <setup_folder> -s <setup_file> -o <output_folder> -q
-cspecifies the source folder.-sspecifies the setup file, such assetup.exeor an MSI file.-ospecifies where to save the resulting package.-qruns the tool in quiet mode.
The tool produces the .intunewin package to upload. Microsoft warns that older versions of the tool can trigger a warning during app creation, so use the current version.

Add the Win32 app in Intune
- In the Intune admin center, create an app and select Windows as the platform and Windows app (Win32) as the app type.
- Upload the
.intunewinpackage. - Enter the vendor-supported install and uninstall commands. Microsoft’s
ApplicationName.exe /quietis only an example for an installer that supports that switch; use the actual arguments documented for your app. - Set install behavior and restart handling to match the installer and deployment requirements.
Microsoft’s workflow and configuration options are described in Create and assign a Win32 app in Intune.
Set requirements and detection separately
Requirements determine whether a device is eligible to install the app. Detection determines whether Intune considers the app installed. Keeping those purposes distinct helps avoid installing on unsuitable devices or repeatedly offering an app that is already present.

Requirements: Is this device eligible?
Set requirements to match the app’s actual needs. Available checks include architecture, minimum operating system, disk space, memory, CPU, and additional file, registry, or PowerShell rules. Avoid requirements that exclude devices the app can support, or admit devices on which it cannot run.
Detection: Is the app installed?
Intune requires at least one detection rule. It supports MSI, file, registry, and custom-script detection. If you configure multiple conditions, all of them must be met for the app to be detected as installed. Choose a signal that reliably reflects the installed state, such as a versioned file or registry value when appropriate.

For a custom detection script, Microsoft says a zero exit code with data written to standard output indicates detection. A nonzero exit code means the script failed and does not mark the app as installed. See Microsoft’s Win32 app configuration details.

Use dependencies for prerequisites
A dependency means one Win32 app must be installed before another. Dependencies can be installed automatically even when they are not assigned separately. Review that behavior carefully, and note that dependencies are not supported for non-Win32 app types such as standalone MSI line-of-business apps or Microsoft Store apps. Microsoft documents a maximum dependency graph of 100 apps, including the parent app.

Use supersedence for updates or replacements
Supersedence expresses an update or replacement relationship with an older app. If the new installer updates the existing version itself, it may be appropriate to leave uninstall of the previous version disabled. If the new app replaces a different app, enable removal of the prior app when needed. Microsoft documents a maximum of 10 nodes in a supersedence relationship. See Microsoft’s guidance on dependencies and supersedence.
Assign the app to the intended users or devices
Choose the assignment based on the outcome you want:
| Assignment | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Required | Installs the app automatically for the assigned group. | The app should be deployed without a user choosing it. |
| Available for enrolled devices | Offers the app for self-service through Company Portal. | Users should decide whether to install it. |
| Uninstall | Removes the app for the selected group. | The app should be removed from those users or devices. |
Target users or devices according to the install context and privilege needs. Before creating the app, review group exclusions, availability, deadlines, notifications, and content download priority. Microsoft describes assignment settings in its Win32 app creation and assignment guidance.
Monitor deployment and troubleshoot failures
After assignment, check the app’s reported install state and error details in Intune. If a required app is reported as absent, Intune offers it again on an approximately 24-hour cadence; dependency retry and reevaluation behavior is also described in Microsoft’s app guidance.

Quick Recap
- Run the vendor’s silent install command in the intended context and confirm it completes without prompts.
- Verify the package source folder included every required file and that the setup command points to the correct installer.
- Confirm architecture, operating-system, and other requirements match the target device.
- Check that detection rules match the app’s actual installed state and that every configured condition can be satisfied.
- Review dependency installation, supersedence behavior, required privileges, and any pending restart conditions.
