For styled-components and Emotion, a wrapper around a custom component works only if that component forwards its className to a DOM element. For Material UI, use sx for a one-off change, a public slot class for a nested element, or theme overrides for reusable styling.
Find the element and rule you need to change
Inspect the rendered page in your browser’s developer tools. Select the affected element and check its computed styles to determine which declaration is winning. Identify whether the target is the component root, a nested element, a state such as hover or disabled, or a value applied through an inline style prop. The right override depends on that distinction.
- If the target is the root, add styling at the component or wrapper level.
- If it is a nested part, use the library’s documented slot or selector for that part.
- If the desired change is to the rendered structure rather than its appearance, use a component or slot API instead of trying to solve it with CSS.
Override a styled-components component
Make sure a custom component forwards className
A styled(MyComponent) wrapper applies its generated class through the className prop. The custom component must pass that prop to an actual DOM element; otherwise the styles have nowhere to attach. The styled-components Advanced Usage guide states that styles will not apply if the wrapped component does not render the supplied className.
function MyComponent({ className }) {
return <div className={className}>Content</div>;
}
const StyledMyComponent = styled(MyComponent)`
color: rebeccapurple;
`;
If the component is yours, confirm that it accepts and forwards className. If it is from another package and does not forward the prop, a styled wrapper alone will not work; use a supported styling API or target an appropriate rendered element from outside.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Resolve specificity and injection-order conflicts
When inspecting computed styles, compare the selectors for the original declaration and your override. Equal-specificity rules can be resolved by source order. styled-components documents that its generated styles are injected at the end of <head> by default, but other stylesheets or more specific selectors can still affect which declaration wins. See its guide to advanced usage.
If you need more specificity, styled-components documents repeating the generated selector with &&&:

const StrongerButton = styled(Button)`
&&& {
color: rebeccapurple;
}
`;
Use this only after identifying a specificity conflict. The styled-components FAQ cautions against treating !important as a routine fix because it can make later overrides harder to manage.
Handle inline styles at their source when possible
A CSS selector cannot beat a conflicting inline style merely by having greater specificity. If you control the component that supplies the inline style prop, change the value there. The styled-components FAQ documents a targeted [style] selector combined with !important as a workaround when the inline value cannot be changed. Reserve it for that situation rather than applying it broadly.

Override a Material UI component
Use sx for a one-off instance
For a local change, Material UI recommends the sx prop. This example changes the root styling of a single button:
<Button sx={{ color: 'rebeccapurple' }}>
Save
</Button>
The exact property and component depend on what you are styling. The Material UI customization guide covers the sx prop and how component styles are applied.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Target nested parts with public slot classes
For a nested element, use its documented global slot class rather than a generated, hash-prefixed class. For example, to style the thumb inside a slider, target .MuiSlider-thumb within sx:
<Slider
sx={{
'& .MuiSlider-thumb': {
borderRadius: 1,
},
}}
/>
Generated class names can change; Material UI’s public global slot classes are the stable target. State styles such as hover, focus, disabled, and selected may use selectors with greater specificity, so inspect the computed styles and match the relevant state when necessary. The customization guide documents slot classes and state styling.

Choose theme overrides for reusable changes
If the styling should apply across instances of a component, use theme component configuration with styleOverrides. If a style should apply only when certain component props match, use a theme variant. Material UI documents both approaches in its themed components guide. Instance-level sx styling has higher specificity than theme styling, so a local sx declaration can take precedence over a theme override.
Change structure with the appropriate component or slot API
CSS changes appearance; they do not reliably replace the component’s rendered structure. Material UI provides distinct APIs for structure and per-slot configuration:
componentreplaces the root element while preserving the component’s slot styling.slotsreplaces a slot component, changing that slot’s component and potentially its styling or behavior.slotPropssupplies props to a slot.
Material UI’s structure customization guide describes these APIs and notes that the slots and slotProps approach replaced older, inconsistently applied *Props patterns in v6. Check your installed Material UI version before using version-sensitive APIs, and preserve valid, accessible HTML when changing elements or slots.
Use Emotion’s styled API when styling by component or prop
Emotion’s styled API can style an HTML tag or a React component. As with styled-components, a custom component must accept and forward className for the generated class to reach the DOM. Emotion also supports style functions and interpolations that read props, which is useful when the style should vary with a component prop instead of being a static override. See the Emotion Styled Components documentation.

Troubleshoot an override that still does not apply
- Inspect the rendered target. Confirm that your rule addresses the root element, the correct nested part, and any relevant state.
- Check className forwarding. If you wrapped a custom component with styled-components or Emotion, verify that it applies the received
classNameto a DOM element. - Read the computed styles. Find the winning declaration and compare its selector specificity with yours.
- Check source order. If specificity is equal, determine which rule is loaded later.
- Look for inline styles. If the conflicting value comes from an inline
styleprop, change it at the source where possible. - For Material UI, use public slot classes. Avoid generated hash-prefixed class names, and use the documented component API if the change concerns structure.
- Verify the installed version. Confirm that the theme or slot API you intend to use is supported by your project’s library version.
